Villa Gamberaia a Settignano - Saverio Pepe
The villa, which belonged to the Benedictine monks of San Martino from the 1300s, became the property of Antonio and Bernardo Rossellino in the 15th century and in 1610 of Zanobi di Andrea Lapi. In 1718 it was bought by the Capponi family, who redesigned the villa in the form it still retains, as can be seen on various 18th-century engravings. It was in this period that the giardino tergale was created, a courtyard-like rear garden decorated with rustic motifs and positioned at a slightly higher level than the building, as were the orangery, with its large potted citrus trees, the holm-oak wood and the stone statues of animals. The property passed into the hands of many different owners during the 19th century, many of whom were members of Europe's wealthy nobility. They included princess Kashko, wife of Eugenio Ghyka, who owned the property from 1896 to 1925. Regrettably, the villa and garden were damaged beyond recognition during World War II. In 1954, the then owner Marcello Marchi began a long restoration project based on careful studies of old documents, and six years later the villa had been once again restored to its former glory. The most interesting part of the garden is on the south side of the building. The beautiful parterre here was laid out at the request of princess Ghyka, by two local gardeners: Martino Porcinai (father of the famous Pietro) and Luigi Messeri. They divided the area into four elongated rectangular pools of water, highlighted by box hedges (in some cases laid out in twin rows) and ending in a hemi-cyclical belvedere with arch-shaped cypress trees, creating an effect similar to that of an 18th-century outdoor theatre, as well as affording superb perspective views over the surrounding Florentine countryside. Parallel to the villa and parterre is a long lawn (300 metres long and 10 metres across), flanked by a high wall adorned with statues and interrupted at one point along its length by a gate leading into a smaller garden with a lawn bordered by hydrangeas. At the end of this garden is a grotto with pebble mosaics and small sandstone and terracotta statues.
