NYU Florence La Pietra Garden
Hey guys! I’m Rainey, currently studying in NYU Florence. This is my first Vlog and it’s a very short tour of La Pietra Garden in NYU Florence campus. In 1994, NYU received Villa La Pietra in a bequest from Sir Harold Acton, including the 37-acre Renaissance revival Garden. It is definitely one of the most fascinating parts of our campus, especially in spring when flowers are blooming. I’d like to share the beauty of La Pietra Garden with all of you.
I’ll start to make more videos in the future. I hope the people who like this video can like, comment, and subscribe my channel to give me some support for learning editing and filming. Feel free to leave a comment if you want~ Grazie Mille and see you next time!

The Tuscan Villa Estate Healthy Living in a Sustainable Landscape
APRIL 23, 2015
NYU Florence, Villa La Pietra (Villa Sassetti)
Villa estates are common across Tuscany and form an integral part of the bucolic Tuscan landscape. Many of the estates have very long histories and are striking for their unchanging structure. The very fact that, like Villa La Pietra, so many of them remain in their much earlier forms is a reflection of their robust physical and conceptual sustainability.
This conference looks at the history of such estates and, with particular reference to Villa La Pietra, reviews how an unchanging model has been reworked over time.

Villa La Pietra, Firenze

VILLA LA PIETRA: Living on the Land with Poetry and Practicality
Presented in cooperation with Friends of FAI
A lecture by Kim Wilkie
Villa La Pietra exemplifies the elegant tradition of Augustan Rome and Renaissance Florence for living well on the land and being inspired by the life to think, write and philosophize. Kim talks about this tradition and his work with New York University on the restoration of the grounds and gardens over the past 15 years. He will explore the creative forces generated by the Villa and show how the concepts have influenced his own work in Britain, Russia and America.

New York University in Legal Saga Over Villa La Pietra
When, in 1994, New York University inherited Villa La Pietra, a vast Tuscan estate that included one of the most revered privately held art collections in all of Italy, it represented a crowing achievement in the US university’s ambitions to stretch itself far beyond Washington Square Park and become a global academic institution. For nearly the entire duration of its ownership of La Pietra, however, NYU has been fighting a legal battle over the estate with an Italian family that claims it is the rightful owner of half of it. Pitting one of the world’s most famous universities against a self-described Renaissance woman Dialta Alliata Orlandi, 62 a princess by marriage, the 20-year lawsuit could finally come to a head later this year.

Every room has been furnished and decorated with great attention to detail.

Matilde Gagliardo, Portrait 101, Eileen Myles, poetess and writer, 2014, 10'
In quest’ultimo caso faccio scorrere i ritratti consecutivamente (o, in alcuni casi, simultaneamente).
The Portrait of Eileen Myles was shot on the 16th of June 2014, at New York University | Florence, Villa La Pietra, Florence, Italy, where she was a guest.
It is part of a series of ‘silent’ film Portraits, shot in real time from 2005 to date (up to now I produced one hundred and seventy-six Portraits, and the number continues to grow). I ask people of different ages and professions, to pose for about ten minutes without speaking or acting. After this time, I record their comments about what they have just experienced. But the basic idea is that the faces ‘speak’ for themselves. With the people looking at us from the screens there can also be a dialogue: in fact the Portraits inspire a silent conversation with the subjects portrayed, accompanied only by the sounds of the surrounding space. Looking at the characters filmed without words – even though one can only imagine their thoughts and reactions –, their individuality reveals itself in a subtle way, the figures who ‘observe’ us, lead us to turn the gaze upon ourselves internally. It is an opportunity to get close to their spirit and to our own, to linger, to think, to perceive our deepest values. The people portayed are close to us even if we are doing something else, and finally, listening to their observations, we come out from under the spell of these silent exchanges.
I edit each portrait separately. Sometimes I edit them in groups, according to different sorts of affinities. In this case I make them run either one after the other or one next to the other simultaneously. The single Portrait or groups of Portraits should be shown on different screens, and should not start at the same time. The final effect should be that of a certain number of portraits or groups of portraits running together on different screens in the same room.
Concept, production, direction, filming and editing by Matilde Gagliardo.
Roberto Scarcella Perino's Furiosus
On June 12, 2019, a performance of Roberto Scarcella Perino’s Furiosus, a two-act opera based on Ludovico Ariosto’s chivalric epic Orlando Furioso, one of the major works in the history of Italian literature dating back to 1516, was staged in the Continuum Theatre at New York University’s picturesque Villa La Pietra in Florence.
The orchestra is conducted by Giuseppe Bruno and the members of the youth chorus are students at the Fiesole School of Music, while the actors embodying mystical creatures, sorcerers, fairies, and fantastic beasts are members of NYU’s Commedia dell’Arte course.
In this video, the director of NYU’s Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo and of the Summer Program at Villa La Pietra, Stefano Albertini, interviews composer Roberto Scarcella Perino, director and author of the show’s libretto, Flora Gagliardi, and co-director of NYU Florence, Larry Wolff.
