An absolutely amazing archaeological site in northern England is Vindolanda, where the famous Vindolanda tablets were unearthed. The remains of a magnificent fort can be visited there, along with a fabulous museum. Watch as David Miano and Mariza Lockhart explore the ruins and provide some insight into the world of the people who lived in and around it. After that, they go to the site of Vercovicium (now known as Housesteads Roman Fort), built right on Hadrian’s Wall, to learn more about life on the wall.

Vindolanda Roman Fort
Dating back before the early 3rd century AD the Roman fort at Vindolanda is a brilliant place to visit as a day trip. It was here that the World famous Vindolanda Tablets were discovered underneath the site of an ancient bonfire. Samples of the tablets are on display in the museum which is brilliant though the majority of them are housed in The British Museum. The tablets provide an astonishing glimpse into what it was really like in Roman times, containing many private and personal notes about life at the time. The Vindolanda Tablets were voted number one of Britain's Top Ten Treasures. At the end of the video are some clips of the Chesterholm Roman Milestone. This is the only Roman Milestone in Britain which is still standing in it's original place, fantastic! Music: Kevin Mcleod.

Stanegate Cottage in Fourstones near Hexham and Vindolanda on the edge of the Northumberland National Park is a 4* VisitEngland dog-friendly self-catering holiday cottage. It sleeps up to 4/5 guests and welcomes 2 dogs: karenskottages.co.uk.
Fourstones is a pretty village in Hadrian's Wall Country, about 4 miles from the market town of Hexham and 8 miles from Vindolanda Roman Fort. The River Tyne runs through Fourstones for nice riverside walks and fishing. It is centrally located, making it a very good base for exploring all of the museums and forts along Hadrian's Wall, or as a base for walking sections of the Wall. Chesters Roman Fort is just a couple of miles away. Guests staying at this cottage also use it as a base for days out and about in and around Northumberland including Kielder Water & Forest, Beamish Museum, the award-winning Northumberland National Park and the Northumberland Coast and North Pennines Areas of Outstanding Beauty.
The cottage is well placed for visiting the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Carlisle and Durham due to its good road and rail links. Newcastle International Airport and Port of Tyne are also within easy reach.
There are two pubs within easy reach of the cottage, both are dog-friendly and serve good food. The Boatside Inn in Warden is 2 miles away and The Red Lion in Newbrough is less than a mile away.

This one is a bit glitchy, I apologise, if you're interested, the roundhouses are from the Severan period so are later than our period 4 fort (105-120 AD) which we are currently excavating hence why they cut through the earlier stuff.
During my time excavating at Vindolanda - a Roman military site in Northumbria - I'm documenting my experience in a wee video diary. Stay tuned for more.

Circular Walking Hexham, Day Hiking Northumberland England UK was about 8.5 miles in distance and undertaken in April 2011. Myself and my partner Anne did this hike whilst on a Northumberland hiking holiday. We drove from our cottage accommodation in Bellingham to the starting location of Wentworth pay and display car park just south of Hexham Bridge next to the supermarket.

Housesteads & Vindolanda Forts circular, Northumberland ©
This is a 7 mile moderate circular walk starting at Housesteads Roman fort information centre on Hadrians wall and heading southwards across the fields to East Crindledykes farm, Thorngrafton common and through Westwood cottages. From there the walk follows Chainley burn to Vindolanda Roman fort . From here the walk heads northwards to rejoin Hadrians wall at Hotbank Farm and follows it eastwards back to Housesteads via Milecastle 37.
