Dream of Italy Season 1: Full Rome Episode
In the second episode of season 1 of Dream of Italy (PBS travel series), we go behind the scenes of the Eternal City. Romans have been making mosaics for thousands of years and artisan Nadia Ridolfini teaches host Kathy McCabe the ancient craft. Food markets like the Campo dei Fiori are a vital part of daily life. Alessandro Volpetti takes Kathy on a tour of the new Testaccio market as well as his family deli, Volpetti. Then the Di Felice brothers, owners of Da Enzo, teach Kathy to make Rome’s famous dish Cacio e Pepe. Next we get “the scoop” on gelato making at Gelateria del Teatro ai Coronari. Noted street artist Alice Pasquini shows us her work, a modern contrast to ancient frescoes. The episode ends at Palazzo Brancaccio with an historic ball performed by Campagna Nazionale di Danza Storica. Special thanks to our underwriters: Viator, Ama Waterways and Perillo Tours. Gastronomia Volpetti
Claudio and Emilio Volpetti opened their shop in 1973 and stock pleasures of the table, their tag line. The brothers come from Norcia in Umbria--many of Rome's deli owners are Norcian. Alessandro, the next generation of Volpettis, also works in the shop and showed us their small but select range of olive oils. Interestingly the shop doesn't stock any Tuscan oils, not because they aren't good, but because they are easily found elsewhere. Instead, Umbrian oils are favored.
Testaccio Food Tour
Food tours are trendy and new for me. So, in the spirit of experiential sightseeing, I booked a four-hour food tour of Testaccio. Since ancient Roman times, the Testaccio neighborhood has fed the city of Rome. And it just seemed right to follow a foodie around on a ten-stops-in-four-hours, movable lunch feast. The tour was put on by Eating Italy Tours (see eatingitalyfoodtours.com), and I figured it was time and money (€65) well-spent. Our guide was excellent — and knows how to talk fast. Here she is explaining everything that we ate and experienced in less than a minute.

36 Hours in ROMA | Rome, Italy
This is from my latest trip to Rome, Italy. Hello to the Eternal City!
Check out all of the best historical sites like the Coloseum, Pantheon, Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Navonna, Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II, Campo de Fiori, Timbre River, Centro Storico, and Castel Sant'Angelo.
Rome, Italy’s capital, is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture and culture on display. Ancient ruins such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum evoke the power of the former Roman Empire. Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, boasts St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which house masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes.
