SCRIPT
Over the past week and following an unprecedented Islamic State advance into Kurdish controlled territory, the Christian population, mainly from Qaraqosh and its surrounding areas, were forced to flee leaving their possessions behind. Some of them had previously fled Mosul for Qaraqosh and are being displaced for a second time, this time to Erbil were many were seen in a refugee camp, Thursday. These people are part of one of the most ancient Christian sects, the Assyrian.
The majority of these Christians set out for Ankawa, the Christian district of Erbil - the Kurdistan territory capital. A rough estimate of about 20,000 people are believed to have taken shelter in 23 different emergency refugee centres, most of them churches. As the situation has worsened, families have now started to gather in a shopping mall.
Christian refugees found security at Mar Eillias and Mar Tsmony Churches in Ankawa, the Christian district of Erbil. About a thousand Christian refugees have taken shelter at Mar Eillias church and 5,000 at Mar Tsmony.

Christ is Risen in Russia - President Putin Wishes All Orthodox Christians a Merry Christmas
Subscribe to Vesti News
Putin wished a Merry Christmas to all Orthodox Christians. Per tradition, the President celebrated it outside Moscow. This time he came to the Church of St. Simeon in St. Petersburg — one of the oldest churches in the city. The head of state attended the service together with parishioners and brought a gift—an antique icon.
Religion in Russia
Religion in Russia is diverse, with a 1997 law naming Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism as important in Russian history. Orthodox Christianity (Russian: Православие Pravoslaviye) is Russia's traditional and largest religion, deemed a part of Russia's historical heritage in a law passed in 1997. Russian Orthodoxy is the dominant religion in Russia. About 95% of the registered Orthodox parishes belong to the Russian Orthodox Church while there are a number of smaller Orthodox Churches. However, the vast majority of Orthodox believers do not attend church on a regular basis.
