Driving to Hana
Recorded January 21, 2004. In my opinion, few drives are more beautiful than the Road to Hana on Maui. Its a curvy coastal road with views of cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, and rainforest. Its a well paved road, but you do need to keep your wits about you when you drive it because of the many sharp curves and one-lane bridges.
My first stop during the journey was the Waikamoi Ridge Trail, an interpretive nature trail in a tropical forest. The trail climbs the dense vegetated slope to a grassy clearing and sheltered picnic area, offering great views of Keanae Peninsula and the ocean. A mosaic of tree roots crosses the trail through the lush rain forest that is adorned with groves of bamboo, paperback eucalypti, mahogany, heliconia, and philodendrons.
If you like beautiful colored flowers, trees & wildlife, panoramic scenery, and hidden waterfalls, then the Maui Garden Of Eden Botanical Gardens & Arboretum is a place you will want to visit. Located between Kailua & Kaenae
Along the Hana Highway.
My next stop was at the Kaumahina State Wayside Park. A 7.8 acre forested rest stop with picnicking and scenic views of the northeast Maui coastline. There are many showy exotic plants and a wonderful overlook of Keanae Peninsula and village. There are several loop trails leading uphill from the ocean.
My trek to Hana continues as I drive around Honomanu Bay, a particularly scenic stretch of this well worn tourist route.
The never ending beauty of the area continues at Waianapanapa State Park. This 122-acre state park encompasses a lovely black sand beach, dramatic sea caves, and natural stone arch.
I then finally arrive in Hana. Hana is a quaint little town located at the end of the beautiful Road to Hana drive. Lovely, rolling green hills inland and deep blue water at sea are the boundaries of this lovely city. Hana is not a destination, it is a peaceful place at the end of a glorious road of natural wonders.
My video concludes at Wailua Falls, 200-feet high, and can be seen from the highway. There was not a whole lot of water falling on the day of my visit.
