Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia
Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia
???????? Cagliari, Italy, capital of Sardinia - tourist attractions
Cagliari is the largest city in Sardinia, capital of the autonomous Italian region of Sardinia and capital of the metropolitan city of Cagliari. The city itself has 154,000 inhabitants (2017).
The old town of Cagliari is called Castello and is located on a hilltop overlooking the entire Gulf of Cagliari.
Sights: the Cathedral of Cagliari, the Cathedral of Santa Maria di Castello, the Basilica of Nostra Signora di Bonaria, the State Art Gallery, Anfiteatro Romano, the Bastion of Saint Remy, and Torre dell'Elefante.
Cagliari - The Stunning city
The Stunning city of Cagliari
Straight away after arriving to Sardinia we felt the special atmosphere of the place even though it was already dark. Narrow streets and tall buildings looked so charming in the lamplight. We booked our accommodation in one of the lanes of Castello District, closeby to Saint Remy Bastion so that it is easy for us to see around. It was late, but our host Gabriella was waiting for us. The place she offered for rent was magical. All the walls as well as the ceiling were covered with art pieces. It made an impression of a cosy arts gallery for our use. She also didn’t mind us cooking at that time of a night.
Next day morning, the first thing we decided to do, was to visit San Benedetto Market and buy some local products for next couple of days. Since we didn’t have any breakfast we stopped by a pastry shop Pasticeria Pirani right behind the building of the market. It was such a nice experience to try what people from Cagliari eat every day. Pastries were mainly stuffed with mozzarella and tomatoes, but some of them also with mushroom or eggplant.
The market was divided into two floors. In the basement there were stalls with fish and seafood and on the ground floor one could find a regular market with vegetables, meat, cheese or pastries. Sardinia is known for goat cheese, so we got some to see how it is.
On the same day we went around Castello to see the Cagliari Cathedral, Carlo Alberto Square and the Palace Square located only 3 minutes from the flat we were living in. Then we found a viewpoint near the Unione Sarda lift and after staring at the stunning picture for a while, we headed down to Marina. We strolled through narrow streets and in the end we got to the port. After a short walk along the port, we came back inside the streets of Marina to have a quick snack before we move further.
After the meal, we started our 5 - kilometer walk from Marina to Calamosca beach, visiting The Shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria on our way. The view from the top of the Shrine is worth attention, you can see Castello and the city hill form a different perspective.
The Calamosca beach turned out to be quite small, but interesting – with the Tower and Light House of Calamosca on the right.
On the next day we went past San Pancrazio Tower and Tedeschina Tower to the Bastion of Holy Cross. We could admire the other side of the city. Through the Elephant Tower, walking down, we reached the Jenne Square in Marina again. From there we took a bus to Poetto beach. There are 2 buses from Via Roma going to the city beach, the PQ and PF. The travel takes only 15 minutes and the ticket costs 1.30 EUR. The beach is surprising. It consists of 8 kilometers of sand with a mountain view and the Devil’s Saddle - a significant feature of the city.
The last thing we really wanted to do was trying out pizza made here. Pizzeria Floris was the place we chose after reading reviews. No name was displayed on the façade of the building, but with the address we managed to find it. People were ordering a take away mostly, since there was not that much seating space inside. Prices were very decent. We had foccacia and pizza. Their wooden stove where they made pizza definitely had an impact on the taste. The owner recommended consuming while the food is still hot to enjoy more and we did so. That’s how an authentic pizza should taste like.
We were thinking of visiting Costa Rei or Villasimius, which are easily accessible by bus from Cagliari, but on that particular day we wanted to go, there was a bus and train strike so we wouldn’t be able to come back. This means we must come back to Sardinia one day.

Top15 Best Things to Do in Cagliari (Italy)
15 Best Things to Do in Cagliari (Italy)
Cagliari is one of the main cities on the Italian island of Sardinia and serves as an important port and a gateway to the north coast of Africa. With a population of 154,000, Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia and is also the most important economic region of the island; it serves as a hub for tourism, and also has a plethora of factories and industries within its municipal boundaries.
Throughout history, a settlement has been present in this region of Sardinia and Cagliari has always played an important role in the Mediterranean sea. Archaeological findings have been found dating as far back as the Neolithic period, and during the times of the Roman Empire, Cagliari was an important military base under the rule of Titus Manlius. After the unification of Italy, this city saw major expansion to both its economic capabilities and residential areas.
As a tourist destination, Cagliari benefits from a host of fantastic historical buildings such as the Duomo and Bastione San Remy, but also from some beautiful parks, gorgeous stretches of coastline, and its well-developed Marina.
