Wallowa Lake Tramway is the steepest gondola in america. Located right in the Wallowas, you get great views of the Wallowa mountains and the lake. This is a great destination to enjoy the top of a mountain without all the climbing that is usually required. There is a wonderful restaurant up top to enjoy food, drinks, and views.

Wallowa Lake State Park is located 5 mi S of Joseph, Oregon in the Wallowa Mountains. Launch is @ 7900 feet plus change. Wallowa Lake & Joseph town, Oregon
My family finally made the trip out to Joseph and Wallowa Lake otherwise known as Oregon's Swiss Alps (approx. 7 hours east from Bend). It was beyond incredible! Where else can you hand-feed wildlife (deer and chipmunks), walk to a knee high creek and see kokanee salmon spawning and ride a 15 minute gondola tramway 3,700' straight up a mountain all in the same day! We were there 4 days and it wasn't enough! The 3rd annual Bronze Biker Rally was going on the same weekend which made the town really come to life. Everyone we met greeted us with a smile there. Thanks for the great times guys! We'll be back soon!

The Wallowa Mountains are a mountain range located in the Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon in the United States. Joseph, Oregon, located at the foot of the Wallowa Mountains, is the jewel of Northeast Oregon. Incorporated in 1887, it has long served as a gateway to incredible recreational opportunities, including Wallowa Lake, the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and the Hells Canyon Recreation Area. Its thriving downtown, with its very own distillery, brewery, and a collection of unique shops surrounded by over a dozen life size bronze sculptures forged by local artists, is a destination on its own.

A HOT Friday afternoon sharing an intimate four person Tram car with friends Bill and Linda Kinnett - and of course, the lovely Donna Lange. Hey, it's just like being in the car with us! The 3700′ vertical ascent to the summit of Mt. Howard was a memorable experience.

Wallowa Lake Tramway
In late June I took the Wallowa Lake Tramway to the top of Mt Howard to view the wildflowers. The elevation of Mt Howard is 8,256 ft. I didn't try to name any of the plants. There was a very nice Phlox present, a low growing Geum trifolium, several Penstemon (although only one is shown in the video). The buckwheats bloom later in the season. There was still snow on the ground during my visit in late June.

In this episode we find ourselves in one of Oregon's 7 Wonders: The Wallowas. The Wallowa mountain range is in NE Oregon and is often referred to as the Swiss Alps of Oregon. With so much to explore, we only scratched the surface and can't wait to return to this gorgeous area.
We stayed at the Wallowa Lake State Park campground for 3 nights, and Scenic Meadows RV Park for 2 nights.
