Walking the City Walls of Dubrovnik
While visiting Dubrovnik we took the opportunity to walk the old walls of the city. It’s the best way to see a full view of the entire old town while exploring a major piece of its history.

When you are in Dubrovnik, you should definitely take a walk around the city through its famous city wall. The Dubrovnik city wall surrounds the old town.
After climbing the first steps you will find the best views of the crowded Stradun. You will also be able to see in the distance the Bell Tower, one of the most famous places in Dubrovnik.
Walk a bit more towards the sea and you will arrive to the historical Bokar Fortress in Dubrovnik, from there you will be able to see the Lovrejenac Fortress, another historical location of this beautiful city.
Of course, besides the view of the city and surrounding mountains and hills, you will always be able to see the beautiful Crystal clear water of the Adriatic sea. This section of the wall in Dubrovnik is full of cafes and other small places where you can enjoy the traditional coffee or some ice cream during the hot summer days. Soon, you will find yourself in the harbour.
Remember to take sometime to really appreciate the view, the 2 km are very tough, make sure to bring enough liquids and to use sun screen all the time. There are several guided tours around the area.
Also, if you are interested in Game of Thrones, you will be happy to know that some of the places around Drubrovnik iconic walls were used in the filming of this series.

Our trip:
Zagreb:
Zagreb has culture, arts, music, architecture, gastronomy and all the other things that make a quality capital city – it's no surprise that the number of visitors has risen sharply in recent years. Croatia’'s coastal attractions aside, Zagreb has finally been discovered as a popular city-break destination in its own right.
Split
Croatia’s second-largest city, Split (Spalato in Italian) is a great place to see Dalmatian life as it’s really lived. Always buzzing, this exuberant city has just the right balance of tradition and modernity. Step inside Diocletian’s Palace (a Unesco World Heritage site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments) and you’ll see dozens of bars, restaurants and shops thriving amid the atmospheric old walls where Split life has been humming along for thousands of years.
Brac
Island Brac, the largest island of the central Dalmatian group of islands, the third largest among the Adriatic islands; area 394.57 sq km; population 13,824.
Hvar
The island of Hvar is the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands. It has been famous since the antique because of its important strategic and nautical position, the rich of the various historical periods, the culture and natural monuments and the literature.
Montenegro
The pearl of the Mediterranean, unique in many ways, is situated in the south of the Adriatic. Nowhere else can you find, so much natural wealth, beauty, mild beaches, clear lakes, fast rivers, and gorgeous mountains in such a compact area as in Montenegro.
Budva
Kotor
Wedged between brooding mountains and a moody corner of the bay, the achingly atmospheric Kotor (Котор) is perfectly at one with its setting. Hemmed in by staunch walls snaking improbably up the surrounding slopes, the town is a medieval maze of museums, churches, cafe-strewn squares and Venetian palaces and pillories.

The Beauty of Dubrovnik Ancient City Walls - Walking Tour 2015 Full HD
Take a walking tour of the City Walls of Dubrovnik (Croatia). Also this is one of the locations where Game of Thrones is filmed. In that world Dubrovnik is known as King's Landing.
Filmed: May 2015 with the Sony DSC-HX400V
Dubrovnik Cable Car:
The city walls are considered to be one of the most grandiose fortification monuments in Europe. The entire city core of Dubrovnik is encircled within these walls. The first fortifications were built in the 8th century, most of the construction took place from the mid-15th to the end of the 16th century. The huge earthquake in 1667 didn't do much damage. And since then both man and nature failed at destroying these massive but beautiful walls.
The main wall on the land side is 4 to 6 meters (13-20 feet) thick, but narrower on the side facing the sea 1.5 to 3 meters (5-10 feet) thick. Its height reaches 25 meters (83 feet) in some places. The walls run an uninterrupted course of approximately 1,940 metres (6,360 ft) in length. The wall on the land side is protected by an additional scarp wall as a defence against artillery fire. The main wall has 14 quadrangular and 2 circular towers, 2 angular fortifications and 4 bastions. Thw wall is protected at four points by strong forts. The strong round Tower Minčeta is to the north, the port is protected by the detached Fortress Revelin in the east and by the big complex of the Fortress of Saint John in the south-east. The western entrance to the city is protected by the strong and beautiful Bokar fortress. The western end of the city is also protected from the sea and land by powerful detached Fortress Lovrijenac.

Walls of Dubrovnik
The Walls of Dubrovnik are a series of defensive stone walls that have surrounded and protected the citizens of the afterward proclaimed maritime city-state of Dubrovnik (Ragusa), situated in southern Croatia, since the city's founding prior to the 7th century as a Byzantium castrum on a rocky island named Laus.
The oldest systems of fortifications around the town were likely wooden palisades.Today's intact city walls, constructed mainly during the 12th–17th centuries, mostly a double line, have long been a source of pride for Dubrovnik. The walls run an uninterrupted course of approximately 1,940 metres (6,360 ft) in length, encircling most of the old city, and reach a maximum height of about 25 metres (82 ft).

Croatia Dubrovnik:
Dubrovnik also known by other names) is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea, in the region of Dalmatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its total population is 42,615 (census 2011).In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic of Ragusa, it achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy. The beginning of modern tourism is associated with the construction of the Hotel Imperial in Dubrovnik in 1897.[citation needed] Although it was demilitarised in the 1970s to protect it from war, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it was besieged by the Serb and Montenegrin soldiers gathered in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) for seven months and suffered significant damage from shelling.
Walls of Dubrovnik:
A feature of Dubrovnik is its walls (992,000 visitors in 2015) that run almost 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) around the city. The walls run from 4 to 6 metres (13–20 feet) thick on the landward side but are much thinner on the seaward side. The system of turrets and towers were intended to protect the vulnerable city. The walls of Dubrovnik have also been a popular filming site for the fictional city of King's Landing in the HBO television series, Game of Thrones.

Walls of Dubrovnik Croatia
➤”The Walls of Dubrovnik (Croatian: Dubrovačke gradske zidine) are a series of defensive stone walls surrounding the city of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia. With numerous additions and modifications throughout their history, they have been considered to be amongst the great fortification systems of the Middle Ages, as they were never breached by a hostile army during this time period. In 1979, the old city of Dubrovnik, which includes a substantial portion of the old walls of Dubrovnik, joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The oldest systems of fortifications around the town were likely wooden palisades. Today's intact city walls, constructed mainly during the 12th–17th centuries, mostly a double line, have long been a source of pride for Dubrovnik. The walls run an uninterrupted course of approximately 1,940 metres (6,360 ft) in length, encircling most of the old city, and reach a maximum height of about 25 metres (82 ft). The bulk of the existing walls and fortifications were constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries, but were continually extended and strengthened up until the 17th century.
This complex structure, amongst the largest and most complete in Europe, protected the freedom and safety of a civilised and sophisticated republic that flourished in peace and prosperity for some five centuries. The walls were reinforced by three circular and 14 quadrangular towers, five bastions (bulwarks), two angular fortifications and the large St. John's Fortress. Land walls were additionally reinforced by one larger bastion and nine smaller semicircular ones, like the casemate Fort Bokar, the oldest preserved fort of that kind in Europe. The moat that ran around the outside section of the city walls, which were armed by more than 120 cannons, provided superb city defense capabilities.”

Dubrovnik Historic Town Gate to Gate - ???????? Croatia - 4K Virtual Tour
A late warm summer walk in Dubrovnik, Croatia from the East-Gate to the West-Gate. Click here ▶ to see highlights and guide.
The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme coordinated by UNESCO.
Even after these disrupting life events the city recovered to an excellent historic state. Old Town and its many sights (including the well-preserved city walls along which you can walk) is one of the top attractions here. The Old Town is also famous for both of the entrance gates, St. Blaise, or Jesuit Staircase from the Game of Thrones series, seen in this walking video!

More info about travel to Dubrovnik: Confined within its walls as it has been for centuries, Dubrovnik juts out from the rocky Croatian coastline looking inviting from both the land and the sea. Though the war killed tourism in the 1990s, today the crowds are most decidedly back. And understandably so — Dubrovnik is a living fairy tale that shouldn't be missed.

Walking The Old Town City Walls In Dubrovnik Croatia - Game Of Thrones!
On 23rd June 2019, whilst on a trip to Dubrovnik in Croatia, we decided to walk the city walls! A well trodden path for tourists coming far and wide. It costs around 200 kuna which is £25. Some great views across the region, this has to be one of the ‘must do’ things whilst you are here!
Can you spot some of the Game of Thrones filming locations? Lots filmed here. If you are a fan this place is full of it.
⚠️ Be warned though, on a hot day you are completely exposed and this day was very very hot! You need sun cream and water. Plus the city of steps certainly lives up to its name on the wall too.
