Tour with commentary of Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco
Well we finally made it to the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, and all I want to do is go back and see it again. Much more than I expected. Fancier. More finished. More perfect than I was expecting. And the location! OMG!! San Francisco is beautiful, and so is this this museum. Took the camera for the complete tour, so you're going to see just about all of it.

Tour The Walt Disney Family Museum - San Francisco California
Explore the remarkable life story of Walt Disney—the man who raised animation to an art, tirelessly pursued innovation, and created a distinctly American legacy that transformed the entertainment world. Located in the scenic San Francisco Presidio, the museum features interactive galleries and state-of-the-art exhibits narrated in Walt's own voice. Get to know the man behind the magic through early drawings, cartoons, movies, music, listening stations, more than 200 video screens, and a spectacular model of Disneyland.
From Mickey Mouse to Snow White, from Mary Poppins to Disneyland, Walt Disney’s artistry and imagination helped define 20th-century America. The Walt Disney Family Museum brings his legacy to life and invites viewers to find their own creative inspiration in his story.
The museum illuminates Walt’s fascinating life: his tremendous successes as well as his disappointments, and his unyielding optimism as he worked tirelessly to advance the art of animation. Walt was a risk-taker who influenced popular culture through pioneering animated and live-action films, television programs, theme parks, and other new technologies. His story is told through innovative, interactive galleries. Visitors get to know Walt through early drawings and animation, movies, music, and listening stations featuring his own voice, among others. A 13-foot model of Disneyland as Walt originally envisioned it is a perennial favorite with museumgoers.
Located in a historic brick building on the main post of San Francisco’s Presidio, the 40,000-square-foot museum melds history with state-of-the-art technology, including more than 200 video screens sprinkled throughout our galleries. Visitors can also enjoy our Museum Store, Learning Center, and Fantasia-themed theater, which shows Disney classics six days a week.
Founded by Walt’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller, the museum was owned and operated by the Walt Disney Family Foundation, until it became its own new, 501(c)3 non-profit, California public benefit corporation—The Walt Disney Family Museum Inc.—in 2014. Although there is no change to the museum’s operations or mission, the museum is now a distinct public charity with a different tax identification number, Board of Directors, and operating budget. ~ waltdisney.org

We Toured Pixar Animation Studios & The Walt Disney Family Museum In California!
In today's vlog we head to the Pixar Animation Studio for a tour! We were so excited to be able to do this on this trip! It's been on our bucket list for a long time and it was the coolest thing ever!! Then we took a ride over to the Walt Disney Family Museum and spent 6 hours looking around at both exhibits there. That was such a great time as well. We really enjoyed the Mickey Mouse exhibit (which isn't always there but we'll link the museum below so you can get more info!). There was so much original art work, toys and even popular artists renditions of the famous mouse! The Walt Disney Family Museum was such an amazing detailed look at Walt's early life and then all the way up until his passing and everything in between. We highly recommended a trip here if you're in the area! Lastly we ended with an amazing dinner at the Riviera pop up restaurant at Quattro in the Four Seasons at Silicon Valley. We had the best day! We hope you enjoyed joining along with us! Thank you for watching and we'll see you tomorrow with a new vid!

Walt Disney Family Museum Tour - San Francisco, California
The Walt Disney Family Museum is an American museum that features the life and legacy of Walt Disney. The museum is located in The Presidio of San Francisco, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco. The museum retrofitted and expanded three existing historic buildings on the Presidio’s Main Post. The principal building, at 104 Montgomery Street, faces the Parade Ground, and opened on October 1, 2009.
The Walt Disney Family Museum, LLC is owned, operated and funded by the Walt Disney Family Foundation, a non-profit organization established by Disney's heirs (including Diane Disney Miller, Disney's biological daughter and founder of the museum). It is not formally associated with The Walt Disney Company, the media and entertainment enterprise.
Exhibits
The 40,000 square foot space in the main museum building features the newest technology and historic materials and artifacts to bring Disney’s achievements to life, with interactive galleries that include early drawings and animation, movies, music, listening stations, and a 12-foot diameter model of Disneyland.
The lobby displays 248 awards that Disney won during his career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and many Academy Awards--including the honorary award for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which consists of one full-sized Oscar alongside seven miniature ones.
There is also a Fantasia-inspired state-of-the-art digital Theater on the lower level of the museum, which screens Disney classics daily.
There are ten permanent galleries, starting with Walt Disney's ancestral history and ending with his death on December 15th, 1966.
Pieces related to Walt Disney's miniature Carolwood Pacific Railroad (built in his backyard), including his beloved Lilly Belle locomotive, are on display at the museum as well.
Critical reception[edit]
Randy Malamud of the Chronicle of Higher Education wrote, It's a collection of ideas and documents, a diverse array of archival, filmic, and pop-cultural texts that historicizes Disney's work and compels us to think twice about how we appraise it. The museum energizes the fascinatingly charged scholarly debate that the Disney phenomenon has provoked, shaking the worn, staid, sometimes cynical images we have of Disney and his empire, bringing to them renewed color and motion.
Edward Rothstein of The New York Times wrote, Given the heritage of the place, you expect to see a ride at the Walt Disney Family Museum . . . And in a way, there is one, since the museum does just what Disney thought a ride should do when he created Disneyland more than half a century ago: it tells a story. And while the museum is almost leisurely in relating its narrative, only here and there veering into uncharted terrain, and while children will quickly pass by many sections that will fascinate their elders, there are more than enough thrills for everyone.

Everyone knows the iconic Walt Disney. With his 65 years on earth Walt Disney changed the face of animation. He reinvented motion picture techniques, including synchronized sound, full color three-strip Technicolor, feature length cartoons as well as technical developments which enhanced cameras for all filmmakers. Many know him as the inventor of The Mouse that became the logo for his Disney Studios and a constant sidekick when Walt hosted the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday night television. The list of full-length feature animation movies is a who’s who of childhood characters that raised a generation. His accomplishments beginning as a young ad artist at the age of 18 and continuing to his death from lung cancer at 65 years old are so vast, that it takes a museum to begin to tell his story.
The Walt Disney Family Museum located at 104 Montgomery Street in the Presidio San Francisco, CA 94129 does exactly that, it tells in detail the life of a man who has made millions of people laugh, smile and act like kids again. The Walt Disney Family Museum is not formally associated with the Walt Disney Company or Disney Entertainment, it is the inspirational brain child of Walt’s daughter Diane Disney Miller. The museum is formally owned and operated by the Walt Disney Family Foundation. The museum is a special dedication to Walter Elias Disney, the man, his story, his work, his innovations, his dreams and his visions.
Diane Disney Miller was the only biological child of Walt Disney. She lived a life apart from the magic that her famous father created, she was mother to 7, as well as founder with her husband Ron Miller of the Silverado Vineyards in Napa Valley, California. She was a pianist with a passion for the classics, a philanthropist who supported the arts throughout her life. Like her father, she was a visionary who dedicated the last two decades of her life to honoring the memory of her father by commemorating his life and accomplishments. Ms. Miller conceived, planned and directed the design and construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles as well as the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, CA.
The Walt Disney Family Museum is in The Presidio of San Francisco, a park and former U.S. Army military fort. It is part of The Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This historic site at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula dates to 1776 when the Spanish established it as El Presidio Real de San Francisco translated as The Royal Fortress of Saint Francis.
Diane Disney Miller had three existing historic buildings within The Presidio expanded and retrofitted to house the Walt Disney Family Museum. The Main building of over 40,000 square feet introduces the visitor to the Museum using a map by Bay Area Illustrator, Dave Stevenson. Like many Disney films that open with a “once upon a time”, this map shows the background of Walt’s Family as the visitor embarks on a journey through the life of the man who created the Disney Journey. Storyboards were one of the pivotal gifts of Walt to the world of animation. This map at the entrance is begins the story of the Disney Family in France, it is the first panel of the Story board of The Walt Disney Family Museum.
The display and interactive media throughout the museum is well suited for both an visitor who prefers an overview as well as a visitor who wants to examine every detail. Visitors tour the treasured collection of the Disney Family at their own pace.
If by chance there is someone who doesn’t know who Walt Disney is, this museum will tell you the story of this man. If you are a Disney aficionado, this museum will show you the living mementos from the pen of Walt Disney, his words that inspired millions along with a behind the scenes look at his ideas, creations and of course the thousands of projects that came from this one mind. The museum is also a treasure chest filled with exclusive family photos of Walt at home away from work.
The Walt Disney Family Museum is an autobiographical museum, as well as a history museum, it is also an art museum, a museum of ideas, a museum of inventions precisely told in multimedia fashion just as Walt would have wanted it. The Museum offers special exhibitions that complement the 10 permanent Galleries, each depicting a distinct period in the life of Mr. Disney.

Architecture | The Walt Disney Family Museum SFO
Offering views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, the Walt Disney Family Museum marks the largest and most historically significant rehabilitation to date in the Presidio, a former military post. The adaptive reuse of the site and three existing buildings into a state of the art museum includes permanent and temporary exhibit galleries, a children’s learning center, a public theatre, café, offices, and archival storage.
The interactive nature of the museum, along with requirements for durable, attractive and sustainable finishes, triggered innovative strategies for reuse. Intricate infrastructure was provided to the exhibit areas, without compromising the character of the masonry and wood-framed spaces of the historic barrack. ~

Walt Disney Family Museum A Randomland Review
The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco. At long last, it’s here, our Randomland Review of this astounding and amazing place, right across from the Golden Gate bridge in the Historic Presidio.
I’ve been a fan of Walt Disney my entire life, and as a longtime Anaheim Resident and Disneyland frequenter, I always wished there was a museum like this devoted to the man behind the legend, Walter Elias Disney.
I’ve traveled to Walt’s early homes and studios, even his boyhood hometown of Marceline, but no place captures the spirit of the man himself, much less displays his stunning achievements, as well as the WDFM. Spearheaded by his daughter Dianne Disney Miller, the Walt Disney Family’s personal stories and artifacts can be found alongside all the incredible relics and information regarding the creation of Disney’s classic works, even the earliest drawings of Mickey Mouse!
For more information including membership, visit the Museum’s website at
And as an aside, I’m a member, and it’s TOTALLY worth the price. Just saying.

Touring the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco
I recently got to travel to San Francisco for the first time, and I had to check out the Walt Disney Family Museum. In this video, I wanted to give a little tour/overview of what the museum is like. If you are even just a casual Disney fan, the Walt Disney Family Museum is absolutely a must-visit. The museum was so well designed, I could have spent all day there! The museum covers all accomplishments of Walt's life and was established by his daughter, Diane Disney Miller. Hopefully this video can encourage you to put visiting the Walt Disney Family Museum on your bucket list to visit! (And stick around until the end of the video if you'd like to see which pins are available for sale there!)
