On July 31st 2016, Wanda Movie Park in Wuhan, China closed its doors after only 19 months of operation. This 540 million US dollar indoor theme park, backed by China’s richest man and one of the most influential companies in China, Wanda Group, would quickly go from being a frontrunning force in the emerging Chinese theme park market with an estimated 3 million visitors in the first year to struggling to get even 500 guests a day through their doors.

The $690 million Wanda Movie Park, designed for client Dalian Wanda Group, is a multi-dimensional and multi-sensory experience spread over 100,000 square metres. This spectacular building houses six film-related ‘ride’ attractions, including 4D and 5D cinema screens, flight theatre, immersive and interactive live performances and a space theatre.
