West Ashley Greenway
Ruby and I took our first walk on the West Ashley Greenway. What a wonderful walk! This portion of the trail is just rife with birds, crabs, fish and spectacular low country scenery. There was so much to see on this part of the trail I'm afraid my excitement kept taking my mind off my filming and the quality suffered. We will be back to walk more of the West Ashley Greenway. what a GEM!

Here are some clips from my ride. It was a nice warm morning and the reptiles were out enjoying the weather. I rode a full lap at 17 miles and my camera was pointed down the whole time! I had to go out and ride another 13 to get some good footage.

West Ashley Flyover, Take a Tour, Charleston, SC
SEE WEST ASHELY FROM THE SKY! This expansive, diverse neighborhood can rightly claim to offer both the oldest and the newest residential areas of Charleston. Familiar neighborhood restaurants, bars and shops, together with trendy new ones, attract residents from surrounding neighborhoods and visitors alike. This area is also home to CharlesTowne Landing, a state park on the spot where settlers first set up camp in 1670.
The Palmetto Trail - Capital City Passage
This passage was done through the city of Columbia, SC. There were some beautiful sites and sounds that the city had to offer. Finlay Park, Riverfront Park, Downtown Columbia and lunch t Atlanta Bread Company were just a few of the awesome things along this trail. There is even a cameo of my hiking bud Terry. Enjoy!!
[Wikipedia] West Ashley
West Ashley or as it is more formally known, west of the Ashley is one of the six distinct areas of the city proper of Charleston, South Carolina, with an estimated 2016 population of 75,144. Its name is derived from the fact that the land is west of the Ashley River.
Flanked by the scenic waterfront vistas and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers and ancient moss draped oak trees, initial neighborhoods west of the Ashley were developed in the 1950s with its largest growth occurring throughout the 1970s and 80s. As Interstate 526 was built in the early 1980s and the Glenn McConnell Parkway was built in the 1990s to help alleviate traffic on the historic Ashley River Road (SC Hwy. 61) corridor, the area saw explosive residential and commercial growth. Major retailers located in the community as land needed for big box stores was not available on the historic downtown Charleston peninsula. West Ashley's original neighborhoods line Savannah Highway (US Hwy. 17) in an area closest to the historic Charleston peninsula. Its first retail district, built in the 1950s, is seeing a revitalization with many art and design oriented businesses having located there in recent years.
West Ashley is the area where Darius Rucker, lead singer of the band Hootie and the Blowfish grew up. He graduated from Middleton High School. Stephen Colbert host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS is also a graduate of Porter-Gaud School located in West Ashley.
The community formerly served by two public high schools is now served by one, West Ashley High School with 2017 students and 135 full-time teachers. West Ashley High School was created by the merging of Middleton and St. Andrews High School. There are also seven public elementary schools (Drayton Hall, Springfield, St Andrews School of Math and Science, Oakland, Stono Park, Orange Grove and Ashley River Creative Arts), four public middle schools (C.E. Williams, Orange Grove Middle, Montessori Community School and West Ashley Middle) and numerous private schools in the West Ashley area including Porter-Gaud School, a K-12 grade college preparatory school founded in 1867.
The community's major arteries include Sam Rittenberg Boulevard (SC Hwy. 7), Ashley River Road (SC Hwy. 61), Savannah Highway (US Hwy. 17), Paul Cantrell Boulevard/Glenn McConnell Parkway (SC Hwy. 461) and Interstate 526. It is also served by the West Ashley Greenway, a popular rail trail that parallels Savannah Highway. West Ashley is home to the region's largest indoor shopping mall, Citadel Mall and the city's newest hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital which along with the mall is also one its largest employers. WCSC-TV Channel 5, the area's CBS affiliate and first television station to sign on the air in Charleston in 1953 moved to a newly constructed broadcast facility in West Ashley in 1997. West Ashley also has an independent community newspaper called West Of, which publishes news pertaining to the area on a weekly basis.
West Ashley is not a self-governed city or town. The majority of the area west of the Ashley is located within the city limits of Charleston with a few remaining pockets in unincorporated Charleston County that are served by the Saint Andrews Public Service District who provides municipal services for those outside the city limits.

Cynthia Graham Hurd Library staff members discovered graffiti on a sidewalk, a column and an exterior wall of the building when they arrived for work Monday morning, Charleston County Library spokesperson Natalie Hauff said.
We were disappointed to see that someone would deface a cherished public institution such as our library, Hauff said.
“The vandalism that occurred at the Cynthia Graham Hurd/St. Andrew's Regional Library is both unfortunate and sad, said County Council Chairman Vic Rawl. There’s no place for this sort of deplorable act in our community. Our libraries are places of education and growth for children and we’ll assist law enforcement in any way possible.”
Since 9 a.m., crews worked to pressure-wash several negative comments off the ground and wall at the entrance to the building. One of the comments contained profanity directed at police.
The vandalism at the library was the most recent incident, police say.
Earlier Monday, police were called to a home in the 800 block of Playground Road at approximately 6 a.m. Police say someone spray-painted racial slurs on the home and profanity on the owner's vehicle.
Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis said the W.L. Stephens Aquatic Center was also vandalized. Police responded at approximately 7 a.m. Friday where someone spray-painted profanity and various racial slurs on a rear storage shed and a basketball court, an incident report states.
Hurd was one of the nine victims of the massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church on June 17, 2015.
Investigators are trying to determine if the incidents are related.
Anyone with information can call 843-743-7200 and ask for the on-duty CPD detective or Crime Stoppers at 843-554 -111.

Wannamaker County Park offers about 13 miles of single track. Most of it is tight, rooty, and zig zags around tree after tree. That's what makes the ridge section such a contrast of flow and fast dirt. Thanks to Gage and Greg of Cooper River Cycles and Ride Bikes. Filmed by Propeller Aerial
