Westerkerk belongs to the Protestant Church in Amsterdam and is located between the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht, on the edge of the Jordaan, a well known residential area in the center of Amsterdam. There is also a Anne Frank House and the Homomonument. The building is listed as Rijksmonument monument.
Westerkerk Tower Tour Amsterdam 2001
The Westerkerk (western church) is a church of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands denomination in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. It is next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, on the bank of the Prinsengracht canal.
The spire, called the Westertoren (western tower), is the highest church tower in Amsterdam, at 85 meters (279 feet). The crown topping the spire is the Imperial Crown of Austria of Maximilian I.[1] The church bells were made by François Hemony in 1648.[2]
Rembrandt van Rijn was buried in the Westerkerk on October 8, 1669. The exact location of the grave is unknown, but presumed to be somewhere along the northern wall. Rembrandt's lover Hendrickje Stoffels is also buried here, and his son Titus van Rijn may also be. Other painters buried in the Westerkerk are Nicolaes Berchem, Gillis d'Hondecoeter, Melchior d'Hondecoeter and Govert Flinck. The church organ is decorated with doors painted by Gerard de Lairesse.
The Westerkerk is located close to the Achterhuis (now Anne Frank House) where diarist Anne Frank, her family and others hid from Nazi persecution for two years during World War II. The Westerkerk is mentioned frequently in her diary - its clock tower could be seen from the attic of the Achterhuis and Anne Frank described the chiming of the clock as a source of comfort. A memorial statue of Frank is located outside the church.

When Amsterdam expanded in western direction in the beginning of the 17th century, new churches were needed. One of these new churches was the Westerkerk (The Western church), built between 1620-1638. The initial designer of Westerkerk was Hendrick de Keyser, whose son Pieter took over after his father died in 1621.

Westerkerk´s Bells, Amsterdam, NL, 5.8.2015 at 3 pm
Maybe this church is the origin of Mike Oldfield´s Tubular Bells.
Mike wrote in his autobiography Changeling(2007) about the time when he was 16 and on tour with Kevin Ayers and The whole world: ...When we were in Amsterdam, we would always play at the Paradiso Club: we played there many times. We´d stay in the same hotel each time, just across the canal from the Westerkerk - a very famous church, even more so these days because Anne Frank´s house was on the corner right next to it. It´s got these wonderful bells with beautiful melodies, called a carillon. I would hear these bells all the time, from my little room. ... (p. 85)
I was there and heard these really beautiful bells =:o)

A clip from inside the Old Church (Oude Kerk) in Amsterdam, Netherlands during a Christmas vacation. A short walk from Dam Square and one of my favorite places to visit. The floor is tombstones covering thousands of graves, and Rembrandt's wife is buried there.

The Bells of Westerkerk, Amsterdam
Last week, I was fortunate enough to get to sit by the canal at Westerkerk and just listen to the bells for 30 or so minutes. The weather was stunning and the atmosphere was perfectly serene - it was probably one of the highlights from all of my stays in AMS from over the years.
I captured a few of the different melodies but this was my favourite. I would love to know what the tune is, if anyone would be as kind to let me know in the comments below!

Amsterdam (English /ˈæmstərdæm/ or /ˌæmstərˈdæm/;[9][10] Dutch: [ɑmstərˈdɑm] ( listen)) is the capital and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the Dutch capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands[11] though it is not the seat of the Dutch government, which is The Hague.[12] Amsterdam has a population of 837,155 within the city proper, 1,333,729 in the urban area and 1,603,531 in the metropolitan area.[7] The city region has an approximate population of 2,431,000.[8] The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country, and is also North Holland's largest city. It comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 7 million.[13]
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme,[14] indicative of the city's origin as a dam of the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading center for finance and diamonds.[15] In the 19th and 20th centuries the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19–20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands.[16] Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and seven of the world's 500 largest companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city.[17] In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city in which to live by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)[18] and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer .[19] The city was previously ranked 3rd in innovation by 2thinknow in the Innovation Cities Index 2009.[20]
Famous Amsterdam residents included Anne Frank the diarist, the artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh and the philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city center. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, Amsterdam Museum, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 5 million international visitors annually.[21]
