Mangrove trail, Everglades, Florida, Unites States 2002, Mrazek Point, before hurricane Katrina
At West Lake, the Mangrove Trail loops through a forest that has seen its share of hurricane-related damage, from salty mud flats deposited by Hurricane Donna to the storm surges of 2005 from Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma. Yet this walk still leads you through a shady tunnel, showcasing the protector of Florida’s coastline, the mighty mangrove.

Ocean To Lake Trail 2019
The annual Ocean To Lake Trail section hike hosted by the Florida Trail Association - Loxahatchee chapter. Six days of hiking through some premier South Florida wilderness areas. The trail runs for approximately 63 miles, west from Hobe Sound Beach to Lake Okeechobee where it ends at the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) trailhead, which is approximately two and a half miles south of Port Mayaca. The trail starts at the ocean, entering Jonathan Dickinson State Park at US 1, traveling through the park, Palm Beach County Natural Areas, Corbett Wildlife Management Area and Dupuis Management Area, and ends at the lake. The ecosystems on this beautiful trail change approximately every mile, from ancient sand dunes with scrub oak and sand pine to pine flat woods, palmetto and oak hammocks, cypress swamp and wet prairies. The temperature during this years hike topped 85 degrees with very high humidity. about 15-20 miles of this years hike was under water; average depth was ankle to knee deep!

Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve.
RV road trip to the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. we stayed at Monument Lake Campground which is primitive but easy to get into in the winter and well located. We also attempt a section of the Florida Trail but the mosquitoes prevented us from attaining that goal.

In this weeks video and blog post we are going back to the Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve to do a couple of things we haven't done before.
We are staying at Monument Lake which is one of the few places this time of the year with any site available. We’re visiting in February at the peak of snowbird season.
In South Florida, besides alligators, pythons, panthers, great blue herons, and anhingas, the most abundant member of the animal kingdom is the mosquito. The mosquitos are relentless on the Florida trail. I was under the impression that the winter was the non mosquito season. I was obviously greatly misinformed. It has also been an unusually hot and humid winter.

Everglades National Park - Shark Valley South Florida, Part 1
On your next visit to South Florida.
Don't forget to check out part 2
You will see numerous alligators, blue herons, and white herons up close without any safety barriers during a visit to Shark Valley. Heeding the recommendations of park officials and a little common sense will be all you need to safely navigate the wild everglade ecosystem.
Everglades National Park covers 1,542,526 acres in Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Collier Counties. The park has two entrance stations. One at Homestead and one at Shark Valley. We chose to explore the expansive everglade system from the Shark Valley location.
You’ll take US 41 to reach Shark Valley wether you are coming from the east coast or west coast. The route is very remote with opportunities for unique recreational experiences along the way including airboat rides and alligator wrestling.
If you plan to hike the 15 mile Shark Valley trail, set aside an entire day. To beat the heat, try to start at sunrise by parking along side of US 41 and hike into the park. This is typical and accepted for hikers and bikers as the visitor center parking lot does not open until 8:30. We saw a huge array of flora and fauna in the short 100 yards between US 41 and the visitor center. In fact, If you don’t have much time and just want to see a great variety of wildlife, just hike in from US41. Once you reach the visitor’s center, enjoy the educational displays and call it a day. That is if you’re pressed for time.
Guided tram tours and bicycle rentals are also available. During our visit, adult tram tickets were $25 and bike rentals were $9 / hour.
We highly recommend hiking the entire loop for all the sights you’ll see. Big alligators, baby alligators, blue herons, and white herons were abundant. Reaching the observation tower for lunch and a mid day break was the high point. What a place to eat lunch and rest. The cool breeze and solitude were rejuvenating.
Make sure you check the weather forecast and plan for storms appropriately. The fact that Florida is the lightning capital of the country should be taken seriously. The trail is wide open with no concealment along the 7.5 miles between the visitor center and observation tower.
When we completed our hike in mid November 2018, restrooms at the observation tower were closed for renovation. There are portable restrooms; however, there is no water available. Make sure you pack enough water for the whole trip. Remember, the trail is concrete and wide open with no shade under the relentless Florida sun. Pack what you think should be enough water, and then throw in another liter.
There was so much to see and show during our adventure, that we will be presenting it in a two episode series. Next weeks episode will showcase the sites and sounds we encountered on our return to the visitor center from the observation tower.
Let us know if you have any questions below in the comments. We’d love to hear about your visit as well. Hope to see you on the trail….

West Lake in the Fakahatchee Strand
Deep in the jungle like environment of the Fakahatchee Strand lies a remote lake teeming with fish and alligators. There are no trails to this location, as with most of our hikes, we navigate our way carefully through flooded swamps and hammocks to explore new areas.
The sounds you hear were dubbed in for effect and are not from the Fakahatchee. All video presented was filmed in the Fakahatchee Strand.

Hell's Bay Canoe Trail, Everglades National Park
The first mile to mile and a half of the Hell's Bay Canoe Trail looks like this. It's a 5.5. mile one-way trail with 174 white pole trail markers. The trail is narrow between the mangroves through about marker 50 and then it opens slightly through marker 80 or so. From marker 80 on, it opens up even more.

Everglades National Park, Florida - Flamingo Visitor Center HD (2016)
Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley and Yellowstone. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.
Florida, US: Landscapes of the Everglades National Park
This video shows the different ecosystems of the Everglades: sawgrass prairies, better seen at Pa-hay-okee overlook, hardwood hammock forests, mangroves at West Lake and swamps with alligators at Shark Valley.
Cycling around Fakahatchee Strand in Florida Everglades
????♀️???????????????????????? Have you experienced the subtropical wilderness of The Fakahatchee Strand? The linear swamp forest is a nice place to explore 'Old Florida' by bicycle. Ride along old logging tramways into the tropical hammock. The Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park is the largest state park in Florida and is home to a variety of plant and animal species that can be found nowhere else in the continental United States. It is the orchid and bromeliad capital of the continent and the home to Florida panthers, white-tailed deer, black bears, alligators, and much more!
Janes Memorial Scenic Drive is the main access point to the majority of hiking and biking trails in the park. Janes can be accessed from State Road 29 and is an 11-mile dirt road extending from the park visitor center in Copeland to Fakahatchee's border with Picayune Strand State Forest. All of the trails in the park are cleared tram roads that were created when the land was logged in the 1940s through the 1960s. The two most popular hiking trails are the East and West Main trams. The West Main tram is located 4 miles down Janes from the visitors center. The trail passes through 2 miles of strand swamp before opening up into a beautiful marle prairie. The East Main tram is located 2 miles further down Janes and extends 10 miles, north to south, connecting Janes to the Jones Grade trail at the north end of the park. The East Main tram is great for hiking and biking and passes through the central slough, one of the most beautiful places in the park.
