Thirty-Five Years Studying and Being Part of the History of The Greenbrier
On Tuesday, October 7, 2014, Dr. Robert Conte presented “Thirty-Five Years Studying—and Being Part of—the History of The Greenbrier” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston.
Conte has been the historian at The Greenbrier since 1978. He was responsible for establishing the archives of The Greenbrier’s historical materials, which he maintains, and is the curator of the Presidents’ Cottage Museum. During his tenure, the secret underground Cold War facility for U.S. Congress was opened to the public, and resort ownership passed from CSX Corporation, which had owned The Greenbrier through its predecessor companies for nearly one hundred years, to current owner Jim Justice.
A native of San Jose, California, Conte received a bachelor’s degree from Santa Clara University and, after two years in the military, his doctorate from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Before coming to The Greenbrier, he worked at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland and at the National Archives. As historian at The Greenbrier, he is the only full-time professional historian employed by a hotel or resort in the United States.
Conte is the author of The History of The Greenbrier, America’s Resort, published in 1990. An enlarged and revised edition appeared in 1998 and was updated in 2010. In 2007 he produced a historical chapter for a coffee-table photography book, The Greenbrier: America’s Resort. An informal but wide-ranging conversation with Erik Hastings, the resort’s Director of Media Productions, resulted in the creation of a DVD in 2011 entitled “A Brief History of The Greenbrier,” which includes photographs and footage from the resort’s archives.
Conte has written numerous articles for local and regional publications and contributed to newspaper articles, books, and museum exhibits. He currently serves on the West Virginia Archives and History Commission and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia and the Board of Directors of the Greenbrier Historical Society.

U.S. Senator calls Cleveland's new Max Hayes a model school for the country
The new Max Hayes High School celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 31.
U.S. Senator Rob Portman attended the event and called the new state-of-the-art career and technical education high school a model for the country.
Many other notable Cleveland community leaders also helped cut the ribbon and toured the facility, including city council members, Mayor Frank Jackson and District CEO Eric Gordon.
Max Hayes also announced that the school will offer a pre-apprenticeship program that puts students on a fast track to jobs in the construction trades.
Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) Overview
A Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) is where applicants for military service go to complete the enlistment process. There are 65 MEPS in the United States and Puerto Rico. Applicants who must travel a distance will receive free lodging at a nearby hotel. Meals and transportation are also provided at no cost.
Nicknamed Freedom's Front Door, MEPS are staffed with military and civilian professionals who carefully screen each applicant to ensure he or she meets the physical, academic and moral standards set by each Service. To do so, each applicant goes through the following steps:
- Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) testing
- Career Counseling
- Physical Exam
- Background Screening
- Oath of Enlistment
Following the Oath, an applicant is now a full member of the U.S. Military. At this point, he or she may ship directly to Basic Training for his or her branch, or enroll in the Delayed Entry (or Enlistment) Program (DEP) and undergo training at a future time. It can be a long day, and a lot happens quickly, but applicants are briefed at every step by MEPS staff, and there is always help available should questions arise.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an access bowl, the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

[Wikipedia] Cleveland Civil War Roundtable
The Cleveland Civil War Roundtable is a nonprofit historical society and social group dedicated to the study and discussion of the American Civil War (1861–1865).
The men and women of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable reflect the ethnic, racial and religious diversity of Greater Cleveland. Its approximately one hundred and twenty members range in age from 17 to 94 years old, at every level of interest and historical expertise. Its common bond is the belief that the Civil War was the defining event of American history. It honors those who fought, suffered and died to preserve the Union, uphold the Constitution and destroy slavery. It also honors, for their courage and their bravery, those who fought, suffered and died for the cause of Southern Independence, a cause in which they genuinely believed. Further, it celebrates the reunion of the states that comprise the United States—one nation, indivisible, and one people under one flag.
The Cleveland group is the second-oldest Civil War roundtable in the country, after Chicago's. Since its founding in 1957, its members have met monthly from September to May. It meets at Judson Manor, on Cleveland's East Side near Severance Hall, for drinks and conversation, followed by dinner and a speaker or presentation on a Civil War topic. It also has an annual debate. Each meeting lasts approximately three hours and costs each member $25, meal included.
In addition to regular monthly meetings, its members also take an out-of-town weekend field trip in late September or early October, every year, to battlefields or important Civil War-related sites. Roundtable contingents went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1997; Antietam, Maryland, in 1998; Richmond, Virginia, in 1999; Washington, D.C., in 2000; Charleston, South Carolina, in 2001; Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley in 2002; Shiloh, Tennessee, in 2003; Franklin, Tennessee, in 2004; Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania, Virginia, in 2005; and Perryville, Kentucky and the Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2006. Members also take other field trips on occasion, to nearby sites of interest, and have in recent years visited the James A. Garfield National Historic Site (Lawnfield), President James A. Garfield's home in Mentor, Ohio; the Western Reserve Historical Society's exhibit on the Civil War, in Cleveland; the new National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and the archaeological dig on the site of the former Confederate prisoner of war camp on Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio.
Past speakers have included authors Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote and Noah Andre Trudeau, military historian Ed Bearss, and many others. The Roundtable is now mounting a national grassroots campaign to convince Congress and the U.S. Navy to name a Virginia-class submarine after the ironclad USS Monitor. The Monitor fought the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia to a standstill on March 9, 1862, in the first battle between ironclad warships (see Battle of Hampton Roads).
All Roundtable events are open to members and guests.

Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 27, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
The House managers wrapped up their arguments against President Trump on Jan. 24. Trump’s team, including lawyers Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow, now has 24 hours to present their case. After Trump’s lawyers conclude their presentation, senators will have an opportunity to submit questions to both sides in writing. Following that, debate will turn to whether to call witnesses and subpoena documents.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.

11. Slavery and State Rights, Economies and Ways of Life: What Caused the Civil War?
The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119)
Professor Blight begins this lecture with an attempt to answer the question why did the South secede in 1861? Blight offers five possible answers to this question: preservation of slavery, the fear thesis, southern nationalism, the agrarian thesis, and the honor thesis. After laying out the roots of secession, Blight focuses on the historical profession, suggesting some of the ways in which historians have attempted to explain the coming of the Civil War. Blight begins with James Ford Rhodes, a highly influential amateur historian in the late 19th century, and then introduces Charles and Mary Beard, whose economic interpretations of the Civil War had their heyday in the 1920s and 1930s.
00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction: Jefferson Davis's Defense of Secession
08:24 - Chapter 2. Fear? Southern Unity? Why Did the South Seceded
20:46 - Chapter 3. Agrarian Society? Honor? Why the South Seceded, Continued
34:19 - Chapter 4. Historiography of the Civil War, from Rhodes to Beard
