Wetlands Safari Canoe Tour Amsterdam
New Amsterdam Travel Video- Great tip: Looking for a nice half day trip outside of the city, that is both easy and totally represents the Holland experience? Then you should try the Wetlands Safari Canoe Tour. In this vid, follow Sander and Jessica on this fun expedition, which starts just 15 minutes north of Amsterdam by bus and takes you through the Dutch waterlands. Navigate through marsh and meadow islands with cows, windmills & bird life and float through quaint, picturesque villages with storybook houses, under wooden bridges and by swans & baby ducks. The canoeing is relatively easy and doing it as a group makes it a friendly and communal experience. Owner/leader Majel is both fun & knowledgeable, giving you Dutch anecdotes about the area along the way. Halfway, enjoy a wine & cheese picnic next to black & white bovines that go mooo! Special thanks to our group mates from India, Ohio & Minnesota who let us put our camera in their faces.

Wetlands Safari - Amsterdam
Wetlands Safari offers a wetlands excursion via a canoe through the reeds and marshes close to Amsterdam and also gives you a short glimpse of 17th century Netherlands. This should be on the things to do list of nature lovers and people who like sporting activities. The tour takes you through unspoilt country sides with beautiful villages and an English speaking guide will direct you towards the various flora and fauna that you will encounter along your trip. If you have something different in mind, you can ask for a special arrangement.

Discover Amsterdam wetland by canoe
Here is an idea for a excursion outside of Amsterdam by the water, in fields away from canals, birds, flowers and cows.
What if, to better understand and appreciate Amsterdam, you had to leave town, take a bus up North and stop in the middle of the countryside to browse by canoe?
Majel from Wetland Safari takes you on a beautiful trip in the wetlands, 10 minutes away from the central Station of Amsterdam.
It starts in Watergang, a village with 83 houses and 217 residents. A cafe, a map introducing you to the area, and there you are, with a red life jacket on your back ready for an adventure.
The stroll is chilled. The area is chilled. Majel is chilled. All is good.
You will leave the picturesque canals of the village behind for the fields. Majel will talk to you about water, polders and dams, and the vegetation which makes the irrigation system possible.
The Dutch are the best in the world when it comes to water management and the creation of land out of inundated areas. A proverb says that God created the Earth and Dutch people created the Netherlands. Global warming, the rising of the oceans and droughts present new challenges. The increasing salanity of the water levels, dam soundness on the sea side and on the polder side… Dams must remain damp on the inside. If they dry up, they become brittle and they collapse.
Wetlands is a nesting or passage area for many migrating birds. Black-tailed godwit, ruff, purple heron, harrier, and other passerines. The best period to enjoy the birds’ presence is from spring to autumn. By then, most of the birds would have left for Africa or Asia.
You may come across cows surprised to see you there. They are taken from pasture to pasture on a barge.
Flora is surprising here too. The landscape may be dominated by reeds and rushes but you can see merciless carnivore plants, elegant meadowsweets, water mint, stunning water lilies, demure forget-me-nots or water irises.
If this landscape inspired Flemish painters, Rembrandt coming first to mind, it rather reminds you of Nympheas by Monet or to Manet when you enjoy a picnic amongst the flowers in the summer.
Back to the village, we made a dip in a shallow but refreshing lake, and at the end we have a drink all together to share our impressions. In our group, there were a Spanish couple splitting their time between England and the Netherlands and some Canadian women living in the US.
The trip takes half a day and it is a really unique and lovely experience.

Canoeing in The Netherlands | Better Together Travels
Per a recommendation from Rick Steves, we discovered Wetlands Safari in Amsterdam. An alternative to the touristy canal tour in the city, this canoe trip brought us to the polderland and closer to the Holland that Van Gogh once lived.

Reclaiming, using, and protecting wetlands, how the Dutch created the Netherlands
Waterloo World Wetlands Day Public Lecture
In commemoration of the Ramsar agreement, the Ecohydrology Research Group and Faculty of Science hosted a public lecture featuring Dr. Jos Verhoeven, an expert on the diversity and functioning of wetland ecosystems. The Netherlands is the common delta of three major rivers. Originally a vast expanse of salt marshes, flood plains, swamps and large bogs, the Dutch began to live there on dwelling mounds 2000 years ago. With vast areas of original wetland wilderness, the Dutch have reshaped it into their minutely controlled country, with continuous innovations in ways to control and make use of these lands.

Zoo Artis Amsterdam, The Netherlands. HD
Artis Royal Zoo was the first zoo to be established in the Netherlands, and it’s located right in the centre of Amsterdam. It’s a place where nature and cultural heritage come together; a place where history has been created since 1838 and where new stories are created daily

This video is about Urban Canoeing Amsterdam Berlage Route.
A 4.5 hour canoe trip through Amsterdam.
We left while misty and came home under a clear sky and autumn sun. Seeing our home town from water gives a total different perspective. No rush hour, no traffic, the city seems to be empty.
Just a beautiful Sunday afternoon in a canoe does the trick...

SAVE SUNDARBANS: PROTEST FROM NETHERLANDS
In protest against coal-fired power plants going to be built in the close vicinity of Sundarbans and in solidarity with thousands of Bangladeshi who will march from Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh to the Sundarbans, there was a solidarity gathering at Dam Square, in Amsterdam on Saturday 12 March 2016 at 14.30 Hour.
Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the planet that situates in both Bangladesh and India with most parts of it inside the former. It is the home of Royal Bengal Tiger (only 150 of those are left in the Bangladesh side of the forest according to recent research) and many other endangered species. It is also a UNESCO declared world Heritage site and RAMSAR site wetland. The forest is also a natural wall against the cyclones that routinely hit this part of the world. It is a big shelter against the rapidly changing climate and a natural safeguard for nearly 40 million people. The project of Rampal coal plants is run by BIFPC (Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company), which is a joint company between India and Bangladesh’s national power companies. Both the proposed 1,320 MW Rampal coal plant and the 565 MW Orion coal plant will sit within 14 km of the Sundarbans (Some experts are even in opinion that the distance is not more than 9 km. And once it was a part of Sundarbans but had been evacuated by the settlers.).
According to Bangladesh Government, the country is in dire need of Electricity and coal power plants are the most viable option. However, Anu Muhammad an economist with Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh, and a leader of the ‘March to Sundarbans’ organisers said, “No sensible person will deny that there are many alternative ways for electricity generation, but there is no alternative for the Sundarbans.” The Rampal coal plant alone will take 219,600 cubic meters of water every day from the Passur River, potentially changing the salinity and temperature of the water on which mangroves depend. The Rampal coal plant will require approximately a shipment of coal every day through the ecosystem’s winding, shallow rivers that will increase chances of a catastrophic spill.
