Lisbon Full City Guide - Travel in Portugal - Travel & Discover
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural centre of Portugal.

Our visit Lisbon travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Lisbon city guide.
20 things to do in Lisbon, Portugal | Top Attractions Travel Guide:
Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.
And that's a wrap for our week in the Portuguese capital! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it gave you some ideas of things to do in Lisbon. As always, if you have any other suggestion for travellers of places to visit and things to do around town, feel free to share them in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!

Lisbon FREE Walking Tour & Portuguese FOOD!
We went on a free walking tour in Lisbon with Chill Out Tours and loved it! Our guide was really funny and we loved learning about the city. Lunch at Super Mario was really authentic feeling, especially since we were the only tourists in there! (And we ended up running into our guide there!) The food was delicious. Of course the gelato at Nanarellas was one of the biggest highlights of the day!

[4K] LISBON, PORTUGAL WALKING TOUR- Restaurant and shopping area
How do we afford to travel so often? We're lucky enough to stay for almost free in every city, using
Explore Lisbon's central shopping and restaurant area as if you were there, in this 4k tour.
We start at the intersection of Largo do Chiado and R.Garrett, in the district of Baixa-Chiado by the entrance to the Chiado Metro station.
We walk past two famous statues, Escultura de Fernando Pessoa and Estátua de António Ribeiro before heading down this pretty Lisbon shopping area.
Sometimes, one of the best things to do in Lisbon is to walk it's charming streets. The Bertrand Bookshop on the corner of R. Anchieta is covered in stunning blue tiles, and it leads us down to the Armazéns do Chiado shopping centre at the end of the street.
Here we turn left down R. do Carmo to see the famous Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa) crossing above us.
Folowing R. de Santa Justa we cross the busy R. Áurea and head down Rua dos Correiros - where we see some great restaurants and more beautiful tiled buildings.
Turning onto R. Augusta with it's intricately tiled pavement, our eye is led towards the great arch known as Arco da Rua Augusta.

Lisbon (Lisboa) - capital city of Portugal
An impression of Lisbon, Portugal. More videos of Lisbon:
Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries.
The city is rich in architecture; Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Modern and Postmodern constructions can be found all over Lisbon.
Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits. About approximately 27% of the country's population live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The municipality of Lisbon includes 24 civil parishes ('frequesias').
Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and warm to hot, dry summers. The typical summer season lasts about four months, from June to September.
It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus.
DISTRICTS:
Alfama - the oldest district of Lisbon; it spreads down the southern slope from the Castle of São Jorge to the River Tagus.
Baixa Pombalina - downtown district; it is the heart of the city.
Chiado - a traditional shopping area that mixes old and modern commercial establishments, concentrated specially in the Rua do Carmo and the Rua Garrett.
Bairro Alto - upper district that functions as a residential, shopping, restaurant/bar/club area; it is the centre of a youth-oriented nightlife.
Belém - famous district from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery.
Parque das Nações - the newest district in Lisbon, having emerged from an urban renewal program leading to the World Exhibition of Lisbon 1998, also known as Expo'98.

2. MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Have you been to Lisbon? It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local operations manager and Lisbon expert. Get ready, because this Lisbon food tour is delicious!
So, where did we go?
1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor.
2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840!
3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited!
4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place!
5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermneted honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table!
6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy.
7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients.
8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it!
9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window.
3. WHO AM I? ????

Best Neighborhoods In Lisbon to stay in:
1. Baixa-Chiado
This is the heart, the center of Lisbon located near the Praça do Comércio, and surrounded by attractions, cafes and restaurants, public squares, and plenty of transportation options. One of the benefits of staying at a hotel in Baixa-Chiado is that you can walk to many places and you’ll be right in the center of Lisbon action.

The area of town opens up more with more space and it’s home to Avenida da Liberdade which is a huge tree lined boulevard known for shopping and designer brands.

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500 to 1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire.
This is a walking tour around Lisbon (Lisboa) the capital of Portugal. Be sure to visit the Castelo de São Jorge, Museu do Teatro Romano, Ponte 25 de Abril, Ponte Vasco da Gama, Aqueduto das Aguas Livres, Belem Tower and more. Be sure to check the Portuguese food, because it's just fantastic. Dining rituals tend to follow the Mediterranean siesta body clock.
