Mountain Bike Destinations: Moab
It’s officially Spring, and you know what that means? It’s time to plan your next MTB adventure!
In 2016 I was lucky to find myself riding trails all across the United States. Because of that, I get a ton of messages and comments asking for recommendations on to take the next MTB vacation.
Today, I’m starting a series aimed at sharing my favorite mountain bike destinations from my travels. I’ll tell you all about what made my experience there so great as well as information on the must ride trails, campsites you can stay at, where to get the best food and beer, fun activities off the bike, and even some sneaky pro tips I found along the way.
Moab
Moab, although is no secret as a mtb destination, holds a special place on my list because it was the first trip that I took with both Brian from BXKC and Seth of Seth’s Bike Hacks. This was the trip where we all realized how well we jelled and really opened our eyes to the amazing possibilties for not just our future YouTube collaborations, but also to our new found friendship. This, combined with some of the most technical and unique single track I have ever ridden made for one hell of an epic mountain bike trip.
The must have ride here is without a doubt The Whole Enchilada. Touting the lofty title of one of the world’s greatest rides, The Whole Enchilada absolutely delivered - and we didn’t even get to ride the entire thing! With an astounding 8,000 feet of descent and everything from high alpine to sandstone canyon, fast and smooth to technical and gnarly, The Whole Enchilada is an amazingly diverse ride that showcases everything Moab has to offer.
Speaking of things to offer - Being an established ride destination does have its perks. Moab has amazing facilities that helped me get by on a low budget the first time I visited with my brother. In addition to plenty of free camping on BLM land outside of town, Moab has an awesome Public library that I was able to use for internet and work. Moab also has a pretty great dirt jump set and skate park right in town so that you can properly get injured before even heading to the trail.
For those of you with a family, Moab may be especially appealing due to the plethora of activities to keep the groms busy while your out shredding. I recommend checking out the awesome National Parks available at Arches and Canyonlands. For an especially dope view head up to the Delicate Arch at sunset and grab a seat: the show is amazing. Another hike I thoroughly enjoyed was the one to the Morning Glory Land bridge. This hike is outside the National parks so there is no fee, and includes some pretty stellar scenery all on a hike that isn’t too long even for your weary bike legs. Another favorite of the Moab scene the offered jeeping and ATV. I was fortunate enough to experience this thrill with our friend Randall who took us out for some hair raising excursions in his jeep, but you can hire guides just the same.
I don’t know about you, but after riding, I’m always in a hurry to clean off and grab some food. There is a pretty cool little spot back at the Mill Creek Trail where you can rinse off, have a beer and hangout, and do a little cliff diving. It can be a little crowded here, but I still thought it was a good time. For food, my two favorite spots were without a doubt the delicious burgers at Milt’s and the Moab diner.
Another trail that I recommend in Moab is Captain Ahab. This is a newer trail and is a great 2 hour loop with varied riding and great views. If you are looking to really send it, you may want to head out to the Bartlett Wash ferried area. Here, you will find endless free ride options that can get pretty hairy, so make sure to do some research first and take a friend or someone that knows the area.
Live Free, Ride Hard, and…. start planning!!!

Porcupine Rim, Moab, UT | From snow to desert with awesome views, exposure and all kinds of tech.
The last before going back from Outerbike to Miami, we got a notification from our airline saying our plane might not leave due to the snowstorm that was rolling in. Being complete newbies with winter driving, we decided not to drive back to Denver to fly home and instead try to shuttle the whole enchilada. We got to do half and it was awesome!
The Porcupine Rim trail is a must do for every mountain biker, whether you're lucky enough to catch the weather on a day that you can do the whole enchilada or as we did just ride Porcupine Rim, this one stands up to its world class destination rating. Whether you like singletracks.com, mtb project or trailforks, you'll find this ride at the top of the US and world rankings, the insane views, the remoteness and the killer riding in both open areas with a plethora of line choice and tight singletrack with huge exposure make it a very unique trail.
Some people are said to actually ride up here from town, and even to the top of burro pass before riding down, but most of us mere mortal shuttle to the drop off point, there are many great companies in Moab that can take you up and have enough local knowledge to know where to drop you depending on the conditions. The whole trail is about 11 miles long and drops 3500ft with an overall gentle slope. After you've traversed the access road and reach the actual trail you'll start by hugging Castle Valley which is worth just stopping and looking at for a while as the cliff drops more than i'm able to mentally calculate into a vast expanse of flat areas and mountains in the distance.
The trail will then veer left away from Castle Valley and towards the rim above Jackass Canyon ending at the recently renamed Grandstaff Canyon Trailhead. The next sections will be a mix of smooth hardpack sand, some slickrock and most abundantly bone and teeth rattling rocky ledges with abundant line choices, drops or rock rolls are your choice and that's one of the things that makes this trail so awesome for most any rider with some experience under their belt, how techincal the trail is depends solely on how fast you want to go and which lines you want to take. Intermediate riders will find lines they can manage and advance riders will find numerous drops. I skipped one drop in particular, not because it was too large, but because it was so windy I had a hard time with the runup, I feel had I dropped it the wind would have pushed far off course, so be prepared for that.
As beautiful as the remote nature is, this is a place for caution, most of the serious documented incidents on this trails are all dehidration, so fill up your pack and bottles and take extra everything, while the weather was super nice to us, if you ride this closer to summer the temperature as you reach the lower parts of the trails will easily exceed the 100's. I know I say this a lot, but take a map app, which ever you want, just give yourself a way to navigate without doubting yourself as with these open expanses you'll want to avoid trekking unmarked trails for your own safety.
As you approach the Colorado river the trail will narrow down quite a bit and you'll be dealing with significant exposure, measure yourself to go at a speed you find comfortable and enjoy the trail while basking in the view, just make sure not to look down...
These last couple of miles are a combination of fast and rocky sections and slow super rocky sections and will step up the techincality of trail quite a bit. This combo made it my favorite part despite the fact that some spots were a must walk for me.
Flats are quite common around here, so take extras, walking down a trail this long and complicated does not sound fun at all, as a matter of fact the bike I rented came with all the stuff to deal with a flat inside a watter bottle stuck to the frame.
As you come to the end of trail you'll land on Utah State Route 128, you can follow this back to US 191 and ride all the way back to Moab on what is thankfully for your now beat up legs mostly downhill.

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA | Epic Moab MTB Ride
The Whole Enchilada MTB Trail has been on my bucket list ever since I started riding. This video documents our trip from California to Moab, Utah and our riding of the Whole Enchilada. I tried to include as much footage as possible without making the video too long. I included footage from nearly every trail starting up top down the end. Highly recommend this ride to everyone! If you do it be sure and bring plenty of water (I had one 20 oz. bottle and a 72 oz. camelbak). Also bring snacks and energy gels, protein bars, etc. Also be sure and run fresh sealant on your tubeless tires. Bring along 2 spare tubes, chain breaker, etc. You DO NOT WANT TO BE STUCK up there.

MONTROSE, CO – Mountain Biking the Whole Uncolada. Part II, Lower Spring Creek and Buzzard Gulch Trails
*Notes, that the trail names featured here are listed as such on Trail Forks, which I reference in the video. Also, we self shuttled this ride. I’ve never seen water flow in the creeks, but multiple sources told me during runoff that they run fast and can be dangerous to cross. Also I say the Fall would be the best time to ride the trail, which is true in general, but do not rule out early morning rides in the summer when fast riders can probably make a whole run in 2 to 3 hours, avoiding the heat and the possible afternoon thunderstorms.
The Whole Uncolada is a big 20 mile, 3,700 foot decent off the eastern slopes of the Uncompahgre plateau in the GMUG National Forest. Everything in the Uncompahgre Valley area is named after the Ute word Uncompahgre. For example, Uncompahgre River, Uncompahgre Plateau, Uncompahgre National Forest, Uncompahgre Peak, Fort Uncompahgre…..You get the picture. Either way the Whole Uncolada Pays homage to Moab’s Whole Enchilada, even though the rides aren’t even comparable. That doesn’t mean I’m not a fan, its an AWESOME ride. The WUnc is also opened to motosport traffic for most of the trail until you reach the Buzzard Gulch trails that are MTB and hiking traffic only.
We pick up at Lower Spring Creek for Part II, but this time things are different. Lower Spring Creek isn’t as steep as the upper half with exemption to scattered parts. The trail is mostly downhill, but the overall nature of the trail is much different. Expect to see multiple flat sections as well as short climbs. Down then Up, then flat, then down, up, flat, down, up etc. Even though features in the trail aren’t as steep, there are areas with the greatest number of rocky technical portions ahead. It’s a quality downhill reminiscent of Bull Run at MAG 7 minus the sandstone.
Riding through the entire Lower Spring Creek Trail, you’ll come to an intersection with a lower loop and a steep climb back to Dave Wood Road. To the best of my knowledge, the Buzzard Gulch loop takes a left to a boring two track road while a right takes you to a nasty climb/hike-a-bike. The Whole Uncolada leads right to the big climb, which is what I recommend.
Completing the climb: turn left and follow Dave Wood Road North to an inconspicuous left side turn and lathe to access the Buzzard Gulch Trail System, Dakota Rim and Rusty Buckets, the only trails not chewed up by moto traffic. Basically, continuing to go downhill will lead you back to the Buzzard Gulch Trail Head. I didn’t notice any Whole Uncolada labels by this point, so you’ll have to mash up the trails to get back to the parked car.
After wrapping up the Whole Uncolada, we picked up my truck and returned to the Forest Fence Trail Head to pick up Aaron’s jeep. The Whole Uncolada is an awesome ride and should be added to the bucket list if you’re visiting the area but falls short of an all-time epic by my book with such stout competition in the region. It’s definitely a top 10 / top 15 ride and one of the few true shuttle-able trails in Western Colorado.

Crested Butte Day 3 -- Bear Creek, Doctor Park with Chasing Epic MTB and The Singletrack Sampler
This is day 3 of the Chasing Epic Trip with the SingleTrack Sampler and we rode Bear Creek and Doctor Park. Doctor Park is one those bucket list rides for a lot of people and it definitely fits that bill.
We started up with a shuttle and rode up some singletrack to Bear Creek trailhead. It was a really nice relaxing climb through some beautiful landscapes. We then descended down Bear Creek which was super flow and some gnar mixed in when you were in the forest. The trail was really really fast when you came out of the forest into a meadow and then we hit a couple creek crossings and some rock gardens.
We got to the road and headed a few minutes up to Doctor Gulch and climbed 1200 or so feet to Doctor Park.
That is when it got super real and fun. The trail starts in an open field and then super steep descent into the woods. Then switchbacks in the woods for a bit into super fast flow. Then a climb and more gnar and then switchbacks to the parking lot. It was a lot of fun! Definitely the most fun trail I have been on to date!
So with a shuttle we got to descent 4300 feet and only climbed around 2400. That makes for and delivered an epic day!
Check out ChasingEpic for an amazing trip that includes food, lodging and epic rides in Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Pisgah!
