About the Winterpalais
Originally built as a lavish stately residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, this jewel is an art hub once again. Building on the historical legacy and farreaching impact of the cosmopolitan prince, the staterooms have become a place of artistic encounter between the baroque setting, the Belvedere’s collections, and contemporary art.
Exhibition „Sterling Ruby“
The Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby (born on an American Air Force 1972 in Bitburg, Germany) is undoubtedly one of the most influential and innovative artists of the generation born in the 1970s and is still one of the most enigmatic, controversial and unfailingly unpredictable figures in the art world. From 8 July to 16 October 2016 the exhibition in the richly decorated baroque rooms of the former residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy represents a survey of the artist’s work including ceramics, bronze, steel and urethane sculptures, mobiles, soft works and tapestries.

The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.
The Lower Belvedere and the former Orangery are venues for top temporary exhibitions. These shows focus on presenting Austrian art in an international context, as defined in the Belvedere’s original mission back in 1903 (when it was founded as the Moderne Galerie). They comprise retrospective shows of Austrian artists, based on research into their work and significance, and major thematic exhibitions exploring key movements and epochs in art.
An insight into medieval art can be gained at the Medieval Treasury, opened in 2007 at the former Palace Stables that once accommodated Prince Eugene’s personal horses. This study collection gives the public access to the Belvedere’s entire holdings of medieval art.
Located at the heart of Vienna, Prince Eugene’s Winter Palace has been renovated and is open to the public as a centre for art and culture. The state apartment’s main rooms are now an exhibition space for artistic encounters between the Baroque interior, the Belvedere’s collections, and contemporary art.
The 21er Haus is housed in the pavilion designed by Karl Schwanzer for the 1958 Brussels World Expo. Renovated and adapted by architect Adolf Krischanitz, it was opened in November 2011 as the Belvedere’s exhibition space for Austrian art in an international context, dating from 1945 to the present day.

Of Italian descent and a native French, Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), following his meteoric rise and splendid career as a military leader, became one of the most influential Austrians who had a long-lasting impact on the country’s fate and its art and cultural history. As a diplomat and counsel to the emperors Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI, he travelled across Europe from one theatre of war to the next, playing a decisive role in determining the future of the House of Habsburg. In 2010, the Vienna Belvedere, with its two palaces and Baroque gardens built by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt in the early eighteenth century as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, is the venue of an exhibition presenting the prince as a general, statesman, and patron of the arts and sciences.

Eugen Franz, Prince of Savoy (18 October 1663 - 21 April 1736), was one of the most important generals of the Habsburg Empire, whose position with great power he significantly expanded. In the war against the Ottomans (1714-1718) he secured the Austrian supremacy in Southeastern Europe. In addition, he exercised in other high state offices. As a builder and art collector, he was one of the most important patrons of his time. After the purchase of this property outside the city wall, he first constructed the french garden, and commissioned the famous Baroque architect Lucas von Hildebrandt (see also Baroque in the Wachau) to build his summer residence: the Lower Belvedere (1714). The Upper Belvedere, was then added as a palace for his festivals, receptions and political activities in 1720. After his death, his heiress, Victoria Princess of Savoy, sold all the estates of Prince Eugen to the House of Habsburg (also Schloss Hof, his hunting lodge, built in 1725). Therefore, it is not surprising that under Josef the IInd of Habsburg - Lorraine the Upper Belvedere became a public art gallery. Today, the Lower - and the Upper Belvedere are museums. The Upper Belvedere is with its Klimt collection, especially with the image The Kiss a special magnet for tourists. The whole area (both castles with the garden) and also the view - nomen est omen - over Vienna are today UNESCO - world cultural heritage.

Eugen Franz, Prinz von Savoyen (18. Oktober 1663- 21.

18 March to 26 June 2016, Winter Palace -
Europe is rich in important picture galleries. But how did their fame spread in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries? The exhibition Princely Splendour – The Power of Pomp in Prince Eugene’s Winter Palace reveals how superb collections became widely known via lavishly illustrated publications, so-called Galeriewerke or “gallery albums”. With the aid of numerous loans from all over Europe, the show traces the history of this type of publication and demonstrates how it contributed to successively making important private collections accessible to the public.

The so-called Hall of Battle Paintings, highlights seven oil paintings depicting the military commander’s victorious battles.
State Bedroom (Blue Room)
In Prince Eugene’s day, the State Bedroom was considered the enfilade’s most outstanding room. The green velvet wall covering was inter - spersed with wide borders embroidered with grotesque motifs. This most spacious stateroom also contained a magnificent bed, which served the purpose of ceremony rather than sleeping. The central ceiling fresco by Louis Dorigny features the Marriage of Hercules and Hebe and is surrounded by illusionistic architecture painted by Marcantonio Chiarini.

Episode 14 - Belvedere Palace.mp4
On our last day in Vienna, we visited the beautiful Belvedere Palace, former palace and gardens of Prince Eugene of Savoy. The palace is separated into an upper and lower palace. We focused on the lower palace which mostly has Baroque art, which is more to our liking. The upper palace has Klimt and French impressionists and a beautiful interior. The gardens are impeccable and the statuary was exquisite, including the beautiful central waterfall.

Yellow Room
The Yellow Room and the adjacent room originally accommodated the prince’s picture gallery. A long hall stretching over five window bays, it displayed paintings by artists such as Anthony van Dyck, Peter Paul Rubens, and Guido Reni, as well as two lacquer cabinets. When the remodelling of the palace began in 1752, the room was divided and a false ceiling installed. This still conceals a ceiling fresco of Boreas Abducting Orithyia by
Louis Dorigny.

11. Juni bis 8. November 2015 -

June 11th to november 8th 2015 -
An exhibition of the Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden in cooperation with the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere.
From 11 June to 8 November, the exhibition Rembrandt – Titian – Bellotto: Spirit and Splendour of the Dresden Picture Gallery at the Winter Palace will showcase approximately one hundred masterpieces by famous artists including Rembrandt, Titian, Bernardo Bellotto, Guido Reni, Anthony van Dyck, and Antoine Watteau. The foundation and development of the Dresden Gemäldegalerie [Picture Gallery] in the eighteenth century will be divided into seven chapters, tracing its evolution into a centre of education and exchange between artists and art historians. Important history paintings, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits clearly convey the prestige of this royal collection. And they also shed light on the collecting practices of the electors of Saxony and kings of Poland, Augustus II, called “the Strong”, and his son Augustus III. Their reigns marked an economic and cultural heyday that has been dubbed the Augustan Age, a time when many buildings and the royal collections demonstrated the new power of the Dresden court. Dresden’s Picture Gallery dates back to the days of Augustus the Strong. The outstanding quality of this collection is largely thanks to the efforts of art experts and agents, who assembled a large gallery of international acclaim. In addition, important artists like Bernardo Bellotto, were called to the court of Saxony, transforming Dresden into one of Europe’s great centres of art.
