Walks in England: Exploring the Forest of Dean - Part One
The Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and northwest, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east.
The area is characterised by more than 110 square kilometres (42 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest crown forest in England, the largest being New Forest. Although the name is used loosely to refer to the part of Gloucestershire between the Severn and Wye, the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since medieval times. In 1327 it was defined to cover only the royal demesne and parts of parishes within the hundred of St Briavels,[1] and after 1668 comprised the royal demesne only.

A cycling destination for decades - The Royal Dean Forest Cycle Club was founded at the Fountain Inn pub in 1949 – the region boasts some of the most beautiful road routes in the country. The main route from John O’Groats to Land’s End runs through Tintern with the A466 offering stunning sights of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty along the River Wye. There’s plenty of pit stops along the way with cafes and pubs catering for visitors on two wheels.
Long before the nationally acclaimed Verderer’s and Freeminer’s Trails were made official, mountain bikers were flocking to the downhill trails of the Forest of Dean. There is now an estimated 72km worth of waymarked trails with Verderer’s attracting 70,000 riders each year with Ex-World Four Cross Champions Tracy Moseley and Katy Curd, training at Pedalabikeaway.
Looking for an even bigger hit of adrenaline? Look no further than the Cannop Cycling Centre were you can discover Outdoor Dirt Jumps, Four Cross, Dual Slalom, Indoor Dirt Jumps and the UK’s 1st Velosolutions Pump Track. There’s also Launchpad – the only trail in the country for downhill wheelchair bikes.
For little legs and relaxing rides, there are miles of family-friendly tracks. Explore ancient woodlands and pause to enjoy the sights of sounds of each season. Over 120,000 people ride the Family Cycle trail every year – why not join them?

5500 feet of amazing natural descents in the Wye Valley near Forest of Dean | Wye Valley Off Piste
I decided to do something a bit different to my normal style of riding and spent a day with WyeMTB doing a guided off piste trails day around the Lower Wye Valley.
Well worth the day out and so much more descending than I could ever do in a day without the Defender to meet me at the bottom, over 20 miles of bike time most of which was downhill which came to early 5500ft of descents! #WyeMTB #WyeValleyOffPiste

Searching for British Wild Boar - Forest of Dean
I went searching for my very first sighting of wild boar in the UK. I've seen them in France, Spain and Sweden - so it was about time I caught up with them in their UK stronghold - the Forest of Dean. Feel free to comment any questions, I'll answer all that I can. Wild boar were hunted to extinction in the UK, twice! But they are now back and providing a hugely valuable service to the natural ecosystems in our native woodlands.
Once we have re-adjusted to seeing 'messy' roadside verges, we'll hopefully realise the huge benefits boar provide by turning over the grassy vegetation and allowing more disturbance-loving wildflower species to become established again. The knock-on impact along the food chain is massive and wild boar could be pivotal to saving some of our rarest birds. Recent evidence is indicating that prior to the advent of farming, turtle doves evolved to feed on the annual seeds that grew in the peripheral disturbed soils created by...wild boar!
