Yakima Sportsman State Park / RV Camping
This week our adventure took place at the Yakima Sportsman State Park. It's a great little park to get away and just take it easy. The boys and I enjoyed walking the trails which lead to the Yakima River. The boys really liked the park playground, so much so that they kept wanting to go back each day. The park was full of smooth roadways for the boys to ride their bikes and traffic was minimal. There were plenty of areas to cast your fishing pole and even though we had better luck catching lily pads, the boys enjoyed it.
Outside of the park, I recommend...
1) Yakima Valley Visitor Center - for info on ALL things to do while visiting Yakima.
2) Central Washington Agricultural Museum - FREE (donations welcome), has a playground, restrooms, and a ton of stuff to look at (inside and out).
3) Precision Fruit and Antiques - Neat little store full of antiques and the fruits is amazing (and cost friendly).
4) Any Rest Stop that states View Point.

WILD HORSE (K'usee) - Yakima Nation - YouTube
Free-roaming horses have been a part of the landscape in Idaho and central and eastern Oregon and Washington since the Spanish brought the species to what is now the United States.
The eagle is an amazing bird, but for me the symbol that best epitomizes the spirit of America is the wild horse and the buffalo. Both great creatures that at one time roamed free throughout much of the land. Today there are only pockets of them found mostly in the Western States, but when you see them, it is still an amazing sight to behold.
We've seen buffalo in Yellowstone National Park and South Dakota and now we saw wild horses on the Yakima Nation land in Washington State.
Wild Horses of the Yakama Homeland have been around for generations and as long as our people can remember. The oral history kept by our people tells of the cultural and traditonal value this prized animal has among the Yakama People. Revered for its endurance and strength, the horse has become a symbol of the true Yakama Spirit and strength that survived the most difficult times over the last 200 years. Today, the horse remains at the same status and is often a prized possession with most tribal members who remember the days when horse chasing and catching was an art itself.
At the present time (2010) there are believed to be over 12,000 wild horses on the reservation.

Ice Age Floods, Lake Missoula, Bonneville Flood and the Columbia River Basalts
Floods of lava (Columbia River Basalts) and Ice Age Floods of water (Lake Missoula floods and the Bonneville Flood) are world-famous topics among geologists. To have both sets of floods in the same area means the geology of the Inland Northwest is truly Disneyland for Geologists!
Tom Foster ( and Nick Zentner (Central Washington University) have been hiking together in eastern Washington for years. The result? A series of short videos that showcase geological wonders in the Pacific Northwest.
This 16-minute video - Huge Floods in the Pacific Northwest - offers an introductory overview of spectacular geologic events that impacted much of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The program begins in Lewiston, Idaho where the floods of lava and water are beautifully on display near the mouth of Hells Canyon. Early on, the Columbia River Basalts - eruptions of fluid lava from deep fissures - are featured. The Missoula Floods from Montana and the Bonneville Flood from Utah - the Ice Age Floods - are surveyed at an introductory level. And finally, the interaction between bedrock and fluid dynamics of the floodwater are highlighted through discussion of Ice Age erosional and depositional landforms. Key locations in the Pacific Northwest are featured, including the Snake River Canyon, Grand Coulee, Dry Falls, the Drumheller Channels, Wallula Gap, and the Columbia River Gorge.
More than a dozen ‘2 Minute Geology’ episodes are now available online.
