Russia: Two 'Army of Victory' memorial trains met halfway in Yekaterinburg
Two “Army of Victory” trains met at the halfway point in Yekaterinburg on Friday after a week-long journey across Russia ahead of Victory Day.
Departing from the military districts of Irkutsk and Penza on the eastern and western edges of the country, the trains moved in each other's direction, while stopping on the way to let people admire the rolling stock. The WWII mobile exhibition on board carried legendary T-34 tanks, IS-3 tanks and SU-100 self-propelled units, as well as artillery and antiaircraft guns from WWII.

Celebrating the Victory day over Nazi Germany. Yekaterinburg, Russia, 09.05. The military parade involves more than 100 units of modern military equipment. Two thousand troops of the Central military district took part in the solemn March. Later on the streets, those who lost in the war, relatives and friends. In the hands of people were the portraits of the characters. 130 thousand people took part in the procession, which is called Immortal regiment. And this is only in Yekaterinburg. In Moscow, 500,000 took to the streets!

A memorial to the victims of the Soviet secret police in Yekaterinburg, Russia, would be a place of quiet reflection if it weren't for the sound of gunshots from a nearby shooting range. Activists say the planned expansion of the sporting facility will encroach on an unknown number of mass graves.

History:
Ekaterinburg is 284 years old. Originally established by the Russian Emperor, Peter the Great, as a major industrial and administrative centre and it has remained so for nearly three centuries.
The glory of the foundation of Ekaterinburg is shared by two fledglings of Peter's nest - Captain Vasilij Tatishchev who determined the location of the plant/fortress, and the engineer and general of artillery, William de Gennin, who later put the plant into operation. On November 7 (18), 1723 two iron-forging hammers were put into operation in the hammer-forging shop of the plant. This event was registered as the official date of birth of the town named after the Saint Martyr Catherine (Ekaterina in Russian), the patroness of mining crafts, and after the reigning empress who had been baptized Catherine by the Russian Orthodox Church.
At the same time, Ekaterinburg was turning into a centre of non-mining industries and banking business. The discovery of Siberian gold brought about a fabulous wealth to the city and stimulated its growth. For a long time the mining of this gold was the monopoly of the Ekaterinburg merchants - the Ryazanovs, Rastorguyevs, Balandins, and others.
Situated on the border between Europe and Asia the town also played an important mediating role in trade. Initially, one part of the fortress, and then of the town, was called a Trade part. In 1843 the State Commercial Bank opened its branch office in Ekaterinburg; the Siberian, the Volga-Kama, and the City Community Banks began operating here early in the XXth century.
Despite its provincial character, the town was a major cultural center. It had a mining school, a mining research society, and a mining museum. 1843 was the year of the establishment of the town's first theatre company, for which, four years later, the citizens constructed a theatre building on Glavny Prospect (Main Street). In 1870, the Ural Society of Science Enthusiasts was established whose members published works about the Ural region and organized expeditions. The national crisis caused by World War I, the February revolution and the October upheaval radically changed the fate of the town. On October 26, 1917 Soviet Power was proclaimed in Ekaterinburg.
Before the civil war Ekaterinburg became a regional centre, and in 1923 it was granted it's rights, and in 1923 it was granted the rights of the administrative centre of the huge, newly established Ural region.
In 1924 the name of Ekaterinburg disappeared from the map of the country. As the totalitarian regime grew stronger it gave the names of its leaders to all places, big and small. Thus, Ekaterinburg was renamed Sverdlovsk and in 1934 it became the main city of the region bearing the same name.
Throughout the 1920s - 1930s Ekaterinburg preserved its significance as an industrial and cultural centre of the Urals. The construction of huge plants brought about a threefold increase in its population. The Sverdlovsk builders constructed dozens of industrial buildings, blocks of flats, schools, shops and hospitals. In 1925 the city got its first water supply line and first bus routes. In 1929 the first tram appeared on its streets and a broadcasting station was put into operation. High-rise buildings became the sign of the time.
In 1940, the city had 12 institutions of higher learning, 30 technical schools, 100 secondary schools, 166 libraries, 7 museums, and 5 theatres.
Sverdlovsk was turning into a city of big science. In 1932 the USSR Academy of Sciences opened its branch here. During the years of World War II the city was turned into a powerful arsenal of military equipment and armaments. The leading enterprises of the city were converted to military production. Sverdlovsk gave refuge to the People's Commissariat of Nonferrous Metallurgy, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Air-Force Academy, the Central Theatre of Soviet Army, the famous Moscow MHAT theatre, and the unique collections of the Hermitage.

Boris Yeltsin is visiting his home town of Yekaterinberg, where he is expected to announce that he will seek a second term as Russia's President.
He took the opportunity to talk tough on Chechnya, an issue which may prove one of the greatest obstacles to his re-election.
The Russian President says the leader and commanders of the rebel Chechen fighters who led two recent hostage raids should be handed over to Russian authorities and shot.
Boris Yeltsin was back in his hometown of Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains Thursday for the first time in nearly four years.
He took part in a memorial service for the victims of the war in Afghanistan where Moscow had troops for ten years and started withdrawing them seven years ago.
With an announcement expected later Thursday that he will seek a second term as president, Yeltsin spoke strongly on an issue that has tarnished his image with voters, Chechnya.
In the wake of two hostage-taking raids by Chechen fighters Yeltsin said the fate of the rebel leaders was sealed.

We are now preparing to stop the war in Chechnya. To start implementing peace and to stop the war. We are going to finish this I'm pretty sure and I wish to do this before the elections.

He said he hoped to end the 14-month-old conflict over Chechnya's independence before Russia's presidential election on June 16.

And it was elections Yeltsin had firmly on his mind on Thursday, looking very much the candidate on a tour of the Yekaterinburg metro.
This was a project started when Yeltsin was the city's Communist Party boss.
Throughout the tour of the metro and then outside he warmly greeted people and chatted to them about their hopes for the future.
Later at a meeting with local administrative officials Yeltsin all about announced his decision to run for a second term.

Overnight procession marks 100th anniversary of last Russian tsar's death
(17 Jul 2018) Thousands of pilgrims began a procession on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of the execution of Czar Nicholas II and his family.
The procession started out from the Church on the Blood, which was built on the site of the execution and was set to end at the site where the bodies were dumped some 21 kilometres (13 miles) away.
The procession was led by Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, which canonised the czar and his family as martyrs.
Russia's last czar, his wife and five children were executed by Bolshevik soldiers in Yekaterinburg 18 months after Nicholas abdicated in the February 1917 revolution.
They had been moved from detention in St. Petersburg to Siberia as the Russian Civil War raged.

Austria: Vienna’s Soviet War Memorial vandalised with red paint
Unknown vandals left the Soviet War Memorial in the centre of Vienna smeared with red paint, Monday. The facade of the memorial was blotched with paint, which covered its golden inscriptions of Soviet leader Josef Stalin's orders to capture Vienna, ahead of its liberation from Nazi Germany in April 1945.
The Russian Embassy in Austria urged the Austrian authorities to take all measures necessary to protect the memorial, which was previously vandalised in 2015.
The construction, which commemorates the 17,000 Soviet war dead who died capturing the city, was completed on August 19, 1945.

The family museum of the final Russian Emperor, Nicholas II, opened today in Tobolsk, in the former Governor's house where the Romanovs lived before being sent to Yekaterinburg.
World Cup Fans Have To Sit Outside This Soviet Stadium To Watch
The World Cup begins today, with Russia playing Saudi Arabia in Moscow for the opening match. 32 countries will be competing in the tournament, which concludes on July 15th.
The Russian Federation is hosting matches in 12 stadiums across the country. One of the last stadiums to be readied for the World Cup is the Yekaterinburg Arena, which was originally constructed in 1957, during the Soviet heyday.
A protected cultural monument, the stadium seated 23,000 people, falling about 12,000 seats short of FIFA’s requirements. So in 2014, chief architect Oleg Gak was tasked with rebuilding the arena to meet the World Cup requirements. There was one caveat, he had to do so, while preserving the arena’s unique Soviet architecture.
“FIFA wanted specific kinds of stands that could hold 35,000 people” said Gak.” So the new stadium was built around the old protected walls.”
Gak’s team decided to open the stadium's perimeter and build temporary grandstands. The expanded seating puts approximately 12,000 fans outside the stadium walls -- but their view of the field should be uncompromised.
“We as designers made plans for the future, assuming the grandstands would go away, and the facade would be closed off” says Gak.
The Yekaterinburg arena will host its first match, Egypt versus Uruguay, on June 15 at 17:00 local time.

Russia: Armata hardware rolls through Red Square alongside WWII tanks
The Russian military’s most up-to-date armoured vehicles and missile systems rolled through Moscow’s Red Square, Monday, as part of the 2016 Victory Day parade to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Among the vehicles shown off to the public were Russia's most advanced battle tank, the Armata T-14; as well as 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled howitzers and all-terrain ‘Tiger’ armoured vehicle.
Among the defensive missile systems, the S-400, RS-24 Yars and the short-range Tor-M2U were presented at the parade.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin on Thursday (19/1) dropped from
the rank of deputy defence minister, three generals who have been
highly critical of the Chechnya campaign. According to a defence
ministry official, the three included General Boris Gromov, who
commanded the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan which was
completed in 1989. The agency named the other two as Georgy
Kondratyev and Viktor Mironov. The three generals have been highly
critical of the army campaign to crush Chechnya's drive for
independence.
