Scaled model of Medieval Youghal
A scaled model of Youghal as a medieval town was unveiled in the historic 13th century St. Mary’s Collegiate Church in the Raleigh Quarter of Youghal.
Such a model allows visitors to visualise a scene in a way that words or illustrations sometimes fail to do. To put it simply, it does all the hard work for the viewer by giving them a unique perspective that allows them to survey a landscape in its entirety.
The model will only serve to further enhance Youghal as a destination for visitors, becoming a key destination on Failte Ireland’s ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ branding initiative. With a new graveyard trail for St. Mary’s Collegiate Church also recently completed (funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland and Cork County Council) along with the Clockgate Tower set to open in June of 2016, hopes of a revival in tourism are well founded as the town continues to roll out a series of quality visitor orientated experiences.
Helen Mulcahy of Cork County Council’s East Cork Municipal District’s indicated the aim of the model was to “make ‘medieval Youghal’ accessible to everybody. The model will introduce children and families to the world of medieval Youghal through a tangible, almost life-like model, said Helen. This model along with our annual Medieval Festival in the College Gardens in August of each year will engage families in ways of discovering and reconstructing the past. By achieving these aims, we hope that greater social value and an appreciation of the town’s interesting past will be gained by those that visit the exhibition.”
Youghal’s Heritage Municipal Policy Committee (on behalf of Cork County Council) originally sought funding from The Heritage Council of Ireland to commission Crowley Model Makers of Bray to build the model. With a scale of 1:500 and a base size of 1000mm x 800mm the model was based on a map of Youghal in 1558 which was set out in the recently published ‘Youghal Atlas’ produced by The Royal Academy of Ireland. The project was developed and produced over a period of 4 months with the Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group managing the project for Cork County Council.
Today the model is in situ in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church which is open to the public from 9.30 am – 4.30 pm (Monday – Saturday) and from 1.00 pm – 4.30 pm on Sundays.

Youghal Mackerel Festival 2013
The wonderfully vigorous mackerel fish have been a very important part of Youghal's Heritage and way of life for hundreds of years. Its very unique that they actually come into the town itself and right up to the quay walls in the town centre. Fishing for mackerel is a popular tourist attraction.
For locals and regular visitors to Youghal, Mackerel fishing is an event where young and old, spectators and fishermen, boats people and terraferma people alike gather along the waterfront to land fresh and tasty mackerel. Memories of the mackerel from times past include the fish jumping onto the quay at the height of the season and as we go to press kids knee high in the water scooping them up with their hands to land them on the smaller town centre beach.
To celebrate the wonder that is Mackerel a voluntary group would like to reel you in to join in a fun festival. The festival is in its 3rd year and is going from strength to strength with lots of free events for all the family. A big part of the programme is two days of local chefs preparing mackerel dishes outdoors in the town centre and offering tastings for the general public. Previous festivals saw the town centre filled with delicious aromas as barbeques and open air fires cooked mackerel tickled by a wonderful variety of spices and herbs. There will appealing fish dishes, wonderfully garnished, to savour and recipes to take away.
The festival, running from Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September, will be a fun-filled affair with the delicious food trail, plenty of live music and family entertainment, children s amusements and a market of local foods. Beginning Friday 30th August from 7.30 p.m,participating restaurants will offer the free mackerel starters and you can expect many specials on the night. Join the delicious Fish Trail at local restaurants where the fish starters will be presented in mouth watering displays.
Saturday 31st August at 2.30 p.m. the opening ceremony commences with Tim Magee. Tim has been the travel and destination dining columnist as Man In A Suitcase for the last three years. Previous to that he was a restaurant reviewer. He written about dining and hospitality for many publications. Tim was one of this year's Hospitality Heroes at Ireland's largest industry conference where he was invited to debate restaurants trends with Dylan McGrath. The Opening Ceremony will be followed by announcing the winners of the 'Name the Mackerel Competition' for kids who are helping to pick a great fun name for the Mackerel Mascot who will appear at the Mackerel Festival each year. Saturday and Sunday there will be some fishy goings on with the barbeques on Market Square The barbeques will be fired up and the mackerel will be flavourful and juicy. You can enjoy a range of sweet and savoury goodies from the local food stalls in the square.
Delicious home baking, freshly baked bread and savouries, local honey, home-made Ice-cream, hand picked salad leaves and tasty summer salads, hot popcorn and lots of treats.
Family fun on both days includes Puppet Shows, Kiddies Amusements, balloon making and face painting and a visit from Perkie Bear. On Saturday, on the water there will be the Aquatrek Sailing Competition and, for land lubbers, the Volleyball Competition. On Sunday kids can make creative pottery pieces on the Potter's Wheels and decorate each piece to take home. Great music throughout the weekend will include bands live on the town centre stage. The committee have thought of everything and have secured alternative venues in the event of poor weather. Looks like Youghal is the place to be this year

Host of Visitor Experiences Launched at Youghal’s ‘Raleigh Quarter’
Host of Visitor Experiences Launched at Youghal’s ‘Raleigh Quarter’
An integral part of Failte Ireland’s ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ was officially launched today (16th March 2016) in Youghal’s historic ‘Raleigh Quarter’. Visitors to the coastal town will now have access to a host of truly authentic visitor experiences including guided tours of St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, a self-guided graveyard trail as well as an exhibition of a scale model of the medieval town of Youghal.
Launching the series of visitor experiences in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, Chairperson of Cork County Council’s East Cork Municipal District, Cllr Michael Hegarty paid tribute to the vision and collaborative efforts undertaken to see the product through to its current state.
“Back in 2006 Youghal Town Council took the visionary step of undertaking a 999 year lease of St. Marys Collegiate Church, thereby safeguarding its future. With the abolition of Town Councils the responsibility of the Church has been passed onto Cork County Council who has duly continued to invest in Youghal’s heritage. Since that time, alongside The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group(YSEDG) and Cork County Council has secured over €1.5M in funding for the conservation of Youghal’s Town Walls and St. Mary’s Collegiate Church from The Heritage Council of Ireland and The Department of Arts, Heritage & The Gaeltacht.
We are thrilled therefore to finally be in a position to offer both visitors and our local community guided tours of St. Mary’s. Cllr Hegarty continued. This Church has been a constant place of worship for over 1300 years and truly is a place of international historical significance. By facilitating guided tours we hope we will open up the Church and the entire ‘Raleigh Quarter’ to a whole new range of ‘culturally curious visitors, as we continue to use our heritage to regenerate the town.” said Cllr Hegarty.
Over the coming months, Cork County Council and the YSEDG will undertake the roll out of a marketing and advertising campaign to promote these visitor experiences and will continue to work closely with partners in Fáilte Ireland to deliver more visitors to Youghal. This year will also see the Clock Gate Tower open with funding secured from Failte Ireland’s’ Ireland’s Ancient East Capital Investment Scheme’. This project alone is set to contribute up to €1.5M to the local economy.
Cllr Hegarty also commended the progress achieved to date on the entire project over the past 10 years. “The Youghal Team in Cork County Council has developed an extremely close working relationship with the Select Vestry of St. Mary’s” commented Cllr Hegarty. “Together with the committed team of Community Employment participants and the Department of Social Protection we have arrived at this point in our progression of The Raleigh Quarter. You are all to be congratulated on what you have achieved to date”. the Councillor concluded.
