Visit to India - Part 46: Hampi - Zanana Enclosure
17th August
Our tour of the Hampi temples continued at the Royal Centre with the Zanana Enclosure and Lotus Mahal, overlooking the Royal Elephant Stables. This is where we had to part with 500 Rps for our Foreigners tickets. They would also get us into the Vittala Temple later in the day.
Lunch was at Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari, a big dilapidated resort, and was not bad. Yoong had vegetable noodles and I had chicken curry, which was very much to my taste.
You can read more about our trip to Hampi here:
Zanana enclosure and Badaviling temple in Hampi, Karnataka
The Zenana Enclosure was a fortified and secluded area reserved for the royal ladies of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Zenana Enclosure is located in the area approaching the Royal Enclosure and near the Ranga Temple.
The enclosure is a sprawling compound that had tall walls surrounding it on all sides and watch towers to keep guard against any trespassers. It was constructed during the days of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The Badaviling Temple in Hampi is dedicated to the Hindu God – Lord Shiva. It has a 3-meter high monolithic lingam, a representation of Lord Shiva, carved out of a single rock.

There is a ticket for entry to this compound. On the east side you will find the Elephant Stables and the Guards Quarters.
Further east of this is Parshwanatha Temple and Ranga Temple
Water pavilion at Zanana Enclosure in Hampi
The Water Pavilion is located opposite to the palace base and at the eastern side of the enclosure. The water pavilion is a decorated platform situated in the centre of a shallow pool. Though the water pavilion is no longer in a working condition, the low spot is one of the attractions of the enclosure.

Watch tower at Zanana Enclosure in Hampi
Quite a large number of them can be spotted in and around Hampi.
They were either the military observatories or the posts of guards at special areas.
The military ones are typically located at vantage points like the hilltops, riversides, and peripherals of the fortifications etc.
The other types are mostly located well within the royal area and other civil localities. They are more decorated (with plastered walls, domed roof, arches etc) than the military (made with rock slabs) ones located at the hilltops.
The watchtowers located in Danaik’s Enclosure and the one inside the Zenana Enclosure are example of the fine watchtowers. Mohammadan Watch Tower inside the Danaik’s Enclosure is the most ornate of all the surviving the watchtowers in Hampi.
Along the riverside on top of the boulder hills, you can spot four-pillared tiny rock pavilions in isolation. A number of these were used as military observatory posts.

Mahanavami Dibba and Queen's Bath in Hampi
The Mahanavami Dibba is one of the most impressive structures in Hampi. It is a beautiful stone platform that is located within the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It was built during the period of the Vijayanagara Empire in the typical Vijayanagara style of architecture.
It is also known as the Dasara Dibba . The imposing platform attracts a large number of tourists throughout the year.
The Mahanavami Dibba attracts attention as one of the tallest structures in the Royal Enclosure of Hampi. The stone platform has a height of about 12 metres. It is one of the first things that visitors notice as soon as they enter the Royal Enclosure.
The Queen’s Bath in Hampi is a colossal bath that exemplifies the architectural excellence prevalent during the days of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is located close to the entrance of the Royal Enclosure in Hampi.
Constructed during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Queen’s Bath impresses visitors even today, more than 500 years after it was built.
The Queen’s Bath is believed to be constructed by Achyuta Raya for the women of the royal family of Vijayanagara. Though named as the Queen’s Bath, it was in all probability used as the private bathing chamber of the king and his queens. It is also believed that the lavish bath was a royal pleasure complex. This belief is due to the location of the bath, which is outside the Royal Enclosure.

Lotus Mahal - Hampi, Vijaynagara.
Lotus Mahal, also known as Kamal Mahal or Chitrangini Mahal is situated in the Zenana Enclosure of the monuments. It is a ticketed monument and a single ticket would let you into the Zenana Enclosure covering several monuments including Elephant Stables. The term Zenana refers to the Women and Zenana Enclosure in general would refer to the Queens' enclosure along with the servants' quarters around and private temples.
Lotus Mahal is a two storied very symmetric structure exhibiting a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture. The base of the structure depicts a Hindu foundation of stone just like in the temples, typical of Vijayanagara Architecture while the upper superstructure is Islamic in architecture with pyramidal towers instead of regular dome shapes, giving it a Lotus-like look, originating in the name. Also, this is one of the very few buildings that have the plaster intact though it is defaced at several places due to wear and tear, especially; the dampness on the walls is very visible. The exemplary carvings on the pillar arches including those of birds and delicate art work can be very mesmerizing, especially with the Makara Torana on top of these arches that can still be seen on some of them.
It is also believed that the Mahal or Palace was air-cooled and maintained its temperature during summer. The proof of this can be seen in the pipeline work above and between the arches.
The entire monument is surrounded by a fortifying wall which is rectangular in plan. The four corners of the fortifications have watch towers that would have been used to keep an eye on the intruders into the Womens' chambers. While it was a very popular practice to have Eunuchs hold guards at Queens' Palaces in the North India, especially during Moghul rule, the existence of such a practice has not come to light in the Vijayanagara kingdom and era.
