The Dogs of Zarkovica - Dubrovnik's Hilltop Animal Shelter
The Zarkovica Animal Shelter was founded in 2004 on the hill overlooking the tourist city of Dubrovnik. The Shelter survives with the generosity of volunteers and donations alone, but with an average of 300 dogs, all of which need feeding, sheltering and medical checkups and treatments, it doesn’t come cheap. The shelter operates without running water or electricity, and all structures and facilities are constructed by hand by the volunteers.

Save Our Sanctuary | Žarkovica Animal Sanctuary | Still Going #2
You can't change the world alone, but for somone, you can change their world. And together, we can change many worlds! With over 300 dogs and 200 cats on the top of a mountain, one woman fights for them, lives with them, and most importantly, loves them!
Despite how hurt or maltreated these dogs have been in the past, despite being given up by their family, they haven't lost faith in us, they haven't lost faith in humanity - let's not lose faith in ourselvs, and show them we are worth it, show them they can trust us! Thats what is done here, helping dogs recover and find new homes, allowing them to gain trust back in humanity, and helping us on the way.
Over 50 of the dogs are domesticated, from homes, the rest are wild and have never felt what it is to have a home - not like we know it. I love Žarkovica, the people are so lovely and are genuinely beautiful people, just like the animals. All of the dogs are so lovely and very adorable, and more than anything, they need you. When volunteers are asked what can we bring to Žarcovica, they respond 'you'. And that is what they do need, caring individuals like yourself to come and help out, be it via walking dogs, maintaining the area or just giving the dogs some attention - all is welcome and appreciated!
But physical things are appreciated too, such as collars, soft dog food (for dogs with teeth problems), topical treatment to prevent ticks (can buy in many stores), veterinary help, money for vets and treatments, food, cages etc. There are so many ways we can help out, even just by spreading the word - because so many people visit Dubrovnik but have no clue that there is a beautiful place like Žarkovika just up the mountain beside it.

Blind Dog Makes Incredible Recovery and Regains Sight | Hunt's Story
Watch the transformation of Hunt, an abandoned hunting dog living on the streets of the Dubrovnik. He was blind, emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from mange. With the love and care from Zarkovica Animal Shelter he made an incredible recovery and his eyesight actually started coming back.
Hunt is now ready to find a forever home. He will need a bit of extra special care and attention due to his partial sight. Hunt is a happy healthy 2 year old dog, and he can't wait to start his new life with a forever family.
Zarkovica Animal Shelter survives with the generosity of volunteers and donations alone, and without these donations Hunt's rescue wouldn't have been possible. With an average of 300 dogs, all of which need feeding, sheltering, and medical checkups and treatments, it doesn’t come cheap. The shelter operates without running water or electricity, and all structures and facilities are constructed by hand by the volunteers.

Cute dogs amazing
My name is Caroline. I am a summer volunteer at Zarkovica dog shelter, high above Dubrovnik. It is a no-kill shelter for the whole region run by an NGO (Drustvo za zastitu zivotinja Dubrovnik, or Society for the Protection of Animals) for the last 13 years. Based in an abandoned fort after the war here, there is no running water or electricity which makes it super hard for workers and volunteers to do their job quickly and well. It has grown from just 26 dogs to nearly 400 in that time with pens being added over the years. Sterilisation is not common here yet , so we need help , for more details go to

Sterilisation is not common here in Croatia, so litters of puppies and kittens happen continuously, born to a grotty life on the street until they are hit by a car, or die of hunger, illness or poisoning. Some dogs have even been shot before arriving at the shelter. The saddest dogs, for sure, are the ones abandoned by their owners often due to the economic crisis. At the shelter, they enjoy the company of other dogs and amazingly, they all get on so well, considering their habitat and numbers around them.
