Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!

Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.

Day 45: We’ve been in New Plymouth, Taranaki for a while now but now we are finally exploring the city, Pukekura Park and the awesome New Plymouth street art.

It’s time to finally have a walkabout in the city of New Plymouth, Taranaki. We begin at our accommodation at the Ducks & Drakes Backpackers and head onto the streets of New Plymouth to explore the city.
We head down to the awesome Pukekura Park with waterfalls, bush walks, lakes, birds and so many things to see. We spend a lot of time wandering around Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, Taranaki.
As well as Pukekura Park, we also check out the wonderful street art of New Plymouth in Taranaki. The city is full of vibrant art which keeps our spirits high even when it is raining on our paper map... Rain and paper maps do not mix.
We attempt to take a bus back into New Plymouth, but when the bus doesn’t stop for us, a friendly local stops by and gives us a lift. How nice!

Stratford - Whangamomona - Tongariro Nationalpark
From Stratford I started my trip towards the Waitomo Caves. I decided to take the famous Forgotten World Highway, which was only 150 kilometres long, but a highly memorable driving journey.
The only village on this Highway was Whangamomona where I could get a stamp for my passport at the historic hotel because it's a own republic in New Zealand!
I ended up at a lost campground in the middle of the Tongariro Nationalpark where I had the coldest night since I'm in New Zealand.

Forgotten World Highway is one of 10 themed highways in New Zealand. It starts in Stratford and goes through picturesque regions of Taranaki and Ruapehu, ending up in Taumarunui. Only 150kms long, it is one of the most unique tourist attractions in New Zealand.
There are many points of interest on the Forgotten World Highway including beautiful town of Stratford, independent republic of Whangamomona (and historic Whangamomona Hotel), Mt Damper Falls, old tunnel, Lauren's Lavender Farm and, of course, amazing views at highest mountains of New Zealand's North Island - Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu. It's great for people enjoying driving, hiking, sightseeing and other adventures. An absolute must-do activity for everyone travelling to New Zealand.
Close to the Forgotten World Highway you can find the largest alpaca farm in New Zealand - Nevalea Alpacas. You can meet these friendly animals here all year round and have a tour around the farm or feed alpacas.

Wellington is a town in the unitary authority of Telford and Wrekin and ceremonial county of Shropshire, England and now forms part of the new town of Telford, with which it has gradually become contiguous.
The total town population of Wellington was 25,554 in 2011 making it by far the largest of the borough towns and the third largest town in Shropshire when counted independently from Telford. However, the town centre serves a greater area of approximately 60,000.
Wellington's first market charter was granted to Giles of Erdington, lord of the manor, and is dated 1244 and a market still exists today. To the north-east of the town is the site of Apley Castle, originally a fourteenth-century fortified manor house, the remains of which were converted into a stable block with the building of a grand Georgian house, which was itself demolished in the 1950s. The surviving stable block has been converted into apartments and retains some medieval features.
Dawley New Town was designated by the Government in 1963, and was expanded to encompass Wellington in 1968 under the new name of Telford, named for the great engineer and first county surveyor of Shropshire, Thomas Telford. The creation of Telford has divided opinion in Wellington ever since, with some celebrating the jobs and investment it brought to the area and others bemoaning the negative impact on Wellington's own economy – as well as its status and sense of identity. The development of Telford Town Centre since the 1970s has hit Wellington's retail centre hard. In addition, moves such as the renaming of the local football team from Wellington Town to Telford United highlighted to many that Wellington was being erased as a town in its own right.
The Wrekin, one of Shropshire's most famous landmarks, provides Wellington with a rolling green backdrop to the south-west. Located just two miles from the centre of the town, it brings tens of thousands of walkers and cyclists to Wellington every year.
Located in the town's Victorian market hall, Wellington Market operates four days a week and houses over 100 stalls. A Farmers' Market takes place on the fourth Saturday of the month, bringing together several Shropshire food producers and retailers in the market's historic home of Market Square.
A short walk from the centre of the town is Sunnycroft, a Victorian villa and mini-estate now owned and run by the National Trust.
The New Buck's Head football stadium, home to A.F.C. Telford United, is in Wellington. Other sporting clubs include the Wellington Cricket Club, currently in the Birmingham League Premier Division, and Wrekin Golf Club. Wellington is home to the Belfrey Theatre an amateur venue run by the Wellington Theatre Company which puts on an annual season of plays and other shows.

It’s Day 42 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where today’s activity is to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
After spending a morning at the Duck & Drakes Backpackers, we head to the coast of New Plymouth to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. There are loads of sculptures, art (and slides which we may or may not use) along the way. We also check out some rock pools.
Along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we see the Len Lye Wind Wand and the Te Rewarewa Bridge. They look particularly awesome at sunset.
From the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we make our way back into the city and back to the hostel.

BLACK SAND BEACH - Travel New Zealand - Vlog #49
On the way to Mount Taranaki, TJ and Me were passing amazing black beach coastlines. In Whanganui we checked out the Durie Hill Elevator and the creepy Elevator Tunnel with an amazing echo!!!!!
We ended up in Stratford, very close to the Mout Taranaki volcano!
