Connacht or Connaught is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of the country. Up to the 9th century it consisted of several independent major kingdoms . Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair , it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair. At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster.     The Battle of Aughrim was the decisive battle of the Williamite War in Ireland. It was fought between the Jacobite Irish Army and the forces of William III on 12 July 1691 , near the village of Aughrim, County Galway. The battle was one of the more bloody recorded fought on Irish soil – over 7,000 people were killed. It meant the effective end of Jacobitism in Ireland, although the city of Limerick held out until the autumn of 1691.
