Uttoxeter is a market town in Staffordshire, England. Uttoxeter lies 1 mile west of the River Dove in East Staffordshire, near the cities of Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Lichfield. Perhaps the most famous event to have occurred in Uttoxeter is the penance of Samuel Johnson. Johnson's father ran a bookstall on Uttoxeter market, and young Samuel once refused to help out on the stall. When Johnson was older, he stood in the rain (without a hat) as a penance for his failure to assist his father. This event is commemorated with the Johnson Memorial, which stands in the Market Place, in the town centre and there is also an area of town called Johnson Road, which commemorates him.
Uttoxeter celebrated its 700-year anniversary of the awarding of a Market charter (1308) in 2008, which underpins the market provision on Saturdays and Wednesdays in particular, and other festival markets. The 1308 charter followed a more general Royal Charter granted to the town's burgesses in 1252. The originals reside at the National Archives in Kew and the Deferrers Museum in Leicester.
Uttoxeter town centre went through a development scheme in 2006-7, with the Market Place, Market Street, Queens Street, Carter Street, and High Street having undergone a major transformation receiving new stone paving and street furniture. The phased development of the Dovefields Retail Park opened in 1998 with Tesco supermarket on the edge of the town, with the further expansion of the Retail Park in 2002 with the creation of seven large retail outlets.
Uttoxeter is on the main A50 trunk road. The town also has a railway station, Uttoxeter railway station, which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on 2 October 1881, but there were earlier stations opened by the North Staffordshire Railway. The bus stop next to the station runs an hourly service to Cheadle, Stoke-on-Trent and Alton Towers. Buses to Stafford run every 2 hours; buses to Burton upon Trent run every hour.
At one time it was also the terminus of a branch of the Caldon Canal (aka the Uttoxeter Canal), but most signs of this, apart from an area of Uttoxeter called The Wharf, have now disappeared—largely because much of the bed of the canal was used in the 19th century as the route of the North Staffordshire Railway main line from Uttoxeter to Macclesfield (which has now also disappeared).
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Balance Street was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin's first church design. He later worked on Alton Towers and the Houses of Parliament. Three miles north west of Uttoxeter are the remains of Croxden Abbey, founded in 1176 by Bertram de Verdun for monks of the Cistercian Order. Redfern's Cottage:Museum of Uttoxeter Life is on Carter Street and is run by a group of volunteers. The restored timber-framed building houses local history displays and a small gift-shop selling local history books and souvenirs, with a cafe opening in 2017.
The town's refurbished Market Place contains the town's main war memorial, as well as the Millennium Monument and the Dr. Johnson Memorial. The Wednesday Friday and Saturday Markets are held weekly in the Market Place, in addition there is a monthly Makers' Market. Smallwood Manor, just over a mile outside the town and built in 1886, was formerly a country house and is now home to Smallwood Manor Preparatory School. The National Trust's Museum of Childhood is located at nearby Sudbury Hall. Uttoxeter Racecourse is one of Uttoxeter's most famous landmarks and is a short walk from the town centre.
Bramshall Road Park is the town's recreational ground and offers tennis courts, skate park, basketball court, football pitch, bowling green and two children's play areas, as well as floral arrangements and Picknall Brook nature reserve which can be followed through to the River Dove. The Alton Towers Resort is around 10 miles (16 km) from Uttoxeter. The Peak District National Park is about 20 miles away. Croxden Abbey is a ruined Cistercian Abbey approximately three miles outside of the town.
The Uttoxeter Casket or Dr Nelson's Casket is an Anglo Saxon reliquary which likely came from Croxden Abbey. It was rediscovered in a cottage in Croxden in the mid 19th century. It probably held a religious relic and was displayed on an altar. The casket currently resides in the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Ohio.

Curiosities of Staffordshire- Flash village
Today we are visiting the (disputed) highest village in Britain, Flash on the border between Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire. Now a welcome break for ramblers visiting The Roaches nearby to enjoy a drink at the highest village pub in Britain (again, other 'highest pubs in Britain' are available!), at one time this little village was a known haven for brigands, counterfeiters and other villainous types. It is due to this that Quarnford, as it was once known, became more widely known as 'Flash'.

We decided to take a trip to Belvoir Castle to re-live some childhood memories!
If you've ever grown up in Leicestershire, chances are you've visited Belvoir Castle! Unfortunately the castle was closed when we visited, so here is a full outside tour of the castle grounds! Luckily it was shooting season, so we have included a pheasant special in the video!

This video reviews British Airways' flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Istanbul Atatürk Airport, Turkey (IST) in May 2018.
Video includes footage of the Galleries First lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5, details of the in-flight experience.
I was initially booked on BA 678 (leaving from LHR at 7:00AM) and my booking was changed to the later flight (BA 676 departing at 10:25). I understand this early flight was often operated by a Boeing 767 but with less passengers choosing to travel to Turkey, BA reduced the capacity to this destination. That's also possibly why I managed to secure a good deal on my airfare in Club Europe.
With a flight time of more than 3 hours, Club Europe is certainly the best option to enjoy a full service. If I had to travel economy, Turkish Airlines would have been my preferred option as they still offer a good service in economy.
In Club Europe, the cabin is configured as 2-2 (with the middle seat blocked). Passengers will also find a blanket and pillow at their seat. As Istanbul is a “long” short-haul, passengers get to enjoy a comprehensive service. It would be great if BA could serve the meal service on a large tray – I am always wary how clean (or not) a tray table is and having more space to put the cutlery or bread would be welcome.
Menu: Starter – Balik-style smoked salmon with horseradish cream, Main – Grilled Atlantic Cod fillet with olive mash and ratatouille, Dessert – coffee cream caramel with gingerbread crumble and Croxton manor mature Cheddar cheese with mango chilli chutney and oat cakes.
Although I would have preferred an earlier flight. I arrived in Istanbul in good time to enjoy the evening and dinner there. My flight has a slight delay on departure but made good progress to IST.
Now a couple of things you should be aware of, when I flew to IST, hand baggage restrictions for electronic items on flights from Turkey were still in place. The restriction for flights from Turkey was lifted on 03 September 2018. I didn't receive any information from BA before my outbound flight. I did receive a text and email shortly before my inbound. I noticed that many passengers before boarding their return flight to London had to leave chargers behind so better and early notification would be welcome
Turkish e-visa:
An e-visa costs $20 and you can pay using a credit or debit card. You can apply up to 3 months in advance of your travel date. Turkish visit visas issued on arrival are valid for multiple stays up to a maximum of 90 days in a 180 day period.
Only use the official website. You will find many adverts for other websites – you could end up paying more!

Trent & Mersey Canal - Middlewich to Anderton (time lapse)
From Middlewich the Trent and Mersey Canal (Mail Line -- Middlewich to Preston Brook) follows the River Dane valley for a little under ten miles to Anderton where the Boat Lift provides access to the River Weaver.
This section provides contrasts between rural Cheshire and the chemical works that dominate around Northwich. The curiously wide parts of the canal, called Flashes, are formed by flooding of subsidence caused by the salt mines.
Yet again our intrepid helmsman Blind Hannibal MacSlackbladder shows off his highly developed steering skills and just north of Wincham Wharf decides not to steer around the bend ramming a tree at full steam ahead instead. A superwoman like single bound from the good lady wife rescued the camera from an early watery grave, a reprieve that lasted all of 24 hours until it met its nemesis at Castlefield Junction next day.

Estate
The castle sits in an estate of almost 15,000 acres (61 km2).
Name
The castle's name means beautiful view. The name Belvoir is, in fact, a Norman import by the French-speaking invaders, but the native Anglo-Saxon population was unable to pronounce such a foreign word, preferring to call it Beaver Castle – a usage which persists today.
Mausoleum
The traditional burial place of the Manners family was St Mary the Virgin's Church, Bottesford. Since elevation to the dukedom in 1703 most Dukes have been buried in the grounds of the mausoleum at Belvoir Castle. The mausoleum at Belvoir Castle was built by The 5th Duke of Rutland, following the death of his wife, Elizabeth Howard (1780-1825), daughter of The 5th Earl of Carlisle. After its construction, most of the 18th century monuments in Belton Church were moved to the mausoleum which then became the family's main place of burial.
Present use
A corner of the castle is still used as the family home of the Manners family. Several films and television programmes have used it as a location, notably the film Little Lord Fauntleroy starring Sir Alec Guinness. The castle itself was used as a location for The Da Vinci Code — it represented Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence. It also featured in the 1985 film Young Sherlock Holmes starring Nicholas Rowe and Alan Cox. In September 2007, it was used as a location for The Young Victoria. In the 2001 Jim Hensonproduction of Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story, the castle is where the giant bones have been discovered. The kitchen scenes of Hill House were filmed here for the 1999 version of The Haunting which is a remake of the 1963 version. The castle was used as one of several stand-ins for Buckingham Palace for the 1991 comedy film King Ralph. Belvoir Castle was used as a stand-in for Windsor Castle in the second series of British television series The Crown.
Belvoir Castle is the host of Belvoir Fireworks, an annual pyrotechnic and firework competition that takes place in mid-August. The grounds also host Belvoir Cricket Club in Knipton, a village cricket club with teams playing in various leagues across Nottinghamshire. The 1st XI play in the Nottinghamshire Premier League.
In 2009, Belvoir Castle hosted the CLA Game Fair. In August 2010, the castle's website was mistakenly hacked and taken over by an Algerian group who blanked the pages and inserted anti-Semitic texts in Arabic. The hackers had mistaken Belvoir Castle for Belvoir Fortress, which is located in Israel.
Briery Wood Heronry is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in the grounds.
