3 Things I Learned Shooting with Thomas Heaton

Today's travel vlog is my last one in the Lake District. I'm still here shooting with Thomas Heaton, though for one last morning. Unfortunately, I kind of slept in through the sunrise. Thankfully, the sunrise didn't really happen. We were completely socked in with fog. It would have been brilliant up there if the light had been better, but we still tried to make the most of it.
I think it's really easy to just get upset in photography when things aren't going your way. But, we have to try to remind ourselves that even if it's not what we had in mind, there's always something to be photographed.
Thomas Heaton and I both had the thought that we had to pick out details in the bad weather. We had to look at the smaller picture. But, unfortunately, even then it was really hard to shoot in the rain.
Eventually, we packed up the camping gear and headed down to our cars.
Sadly, it's time to end this trip to the Lake District with Tom. So, after hiking down to the cars and grabbing breakfast we parted ways.
I learned a lot shooting with Thomas Heaton. I think I always learn when I go out and shoot photography with other people. It's easy to think of professional photographers like us as people who know it all. But, we don't. We are constantly learning and improving. And, even when we don't learn technical things, we learn things about ourselves.
The three things I learned shooting photography with Thomas Heaton are:
- I need to slow down. I race around too much when I'm shooting. I need to relax and spend more time scouting and developing images before I take them.
- I need to provide more information for you guys on YouTube that can serve as attainable skills for you to do in photography. Thomas is really good at that.
- I need an English accent. Thomas' accent is so cool. I want it.
Anyways guys, that's it for this collaboration with Thomas Heaton. It was so much fun. No matter how much fun it might have been watching it on YouTube, I guarantee it was more fun in real life.
There are still 1 or 2 vlogs still coming from England, but it's almost over - for now. Then, the photography vlog will carry over to Canada. Stay tuned for that.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a university city on the River Tyne in northeast England. Newcastle upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities. Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University.
The city of Newcastle upon Tyne developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres. Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA. Among its icons are Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Since 1981 the city has hosted the Great North Run, a half marathon which attracts over 57,000 runners each year.
Newcastle International Airport is located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) from the city centre on the northern outskirts of the city near Ponteland . Newcastle railway station, also known as Newcastle Central Station, is a principal stop on the East Coast Main Line and Cross Country Route. Central Station is one of the busiest stations in Britain. The city is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro, a system of suburban and underground railways covering much of Tyne and Wear. Major roads in the area include the A1 (Gateshead Newcastle Western Bypass), stretching north to Edinburgh and south to London; the A19 heading south past Sunderland and Middlesbrough to York and Doncaster; the A69 heading west to Carlisle; the A696, which becomes the A68 heads past Newcastle Airport. Newcastle is accessible by several mostly traffic-free cycle routes that lead to the edges of the city centre. here are 3 main bus companies providing services in the city; Arriva North East, Go North East and Stagecoach North East.

Family Activities in Manchester, England
Though mainly known for its famous football clubs, Manchester, the world’s first industrialized city is home to a number of iconic buildings, great museums, and amazing restaurants. It also has a great public transit system and a walkable downtown core, even for kids, making it a great place to visit for the whole family.

It's my last Iceland Vlog as Jeff and I are dropping people off at the airport and ending this photography trip.
The Photography trip to Iceland has been amazing. And, all the participants have been incredible.
I learned a lot on this photo trip, too. Yes, I was the guide and instructor, but I think that no matter your position you should always be seeking to grow and learn. This trip was no different.
The three things I learned in Iceland were:
1) Photographers who want to sell their images can't shoot the same locations everyone else does. If you shoot photography at the iconic places only, it's hard to sell the files as there's so much competition. Find new places to shoot.
2) The big difference between making it as a pro photographer and not is finding the time to shoot. You really need to dive in and commit if you want to be a professional photographer.
3) I've been lucky in so many ways. I've never had broken camera gear. I've never lost files. And, I've been pretty careless. So, I need to get better at protecting my gear.
This is the last Iceland Vlog, and I do head back to England at the end of this episode.
The next photography vlog will be from back here in England. So, I hope you stay tuned to the channel for those episodes.

This was my first trip to the UK and while most travelers would choose to explore the big city on a first visit, I've always loved the countryside, so I was excited to explore the parts of the country known for their stunning natural good looks.
