    Isla Chañaral is located 6 km off-shore from the northern Central Chilean coast, some 100 km north of the city of La Serena. Together with Isla Choros and Isla Damas, the island forms the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve, which is administered by the Chilean Forestry Corporation . All three islands support populations of Humboldt penguins, but are also habitat for several other rare and endangered animal species such as the Peruvian diving petrel or the South American marine otter. In recent years the reserve has experienced a strong increase in tourist activities, mainly due to being an important feeding ground in the sunner months of different marine mammal species like fin whales, blue whales, humpback whaless, and bottlenose dolphins that reside in the waters of the reserve.   • 2. Reserva Nacional Pinguino de Humboldt Punta Choros
    Pingüino de Humboldt National Reserve is a nature reserve located a short distance off the coast of mainland Chile. It consists of three islands: Chañaral, Damas and Choros. It is located about 100 km north of La Serena in the Coquimbo Region of Chile and has a total area of 859.3 hectares . Coastal communities of Caleta Chañaral, Chañaral de Aceituno, Punta de Choros are nearby. The reserve is an important breeding site for the Humboldt penguin, for which it is named, and is a habitat for sea lions and bottlenose dolphins chunchungos, Magellanic penguin, sea turtle, whale, albatross and cormorant.
