Hezbollah fighters in South Lebanon on Wednesday (8/5) vowed to continue resisting Israel as long as it occupies their territory. To reinforce its message of defiance of Israel, Hezbollah organised a tour of its frontlines in southern Lebanon. Fighters displayed a Katyusha rocket and a launcher which they used in last month's battle with Israeli forces.

LEBANON: SYRIAN PRESIDENT REFUSES TO MEET WITH US SECRETARY OF STATE

Syria's President has apparently refused to meet again with the U-S Secretary of State, who had returned to Damascus for yet more talks aimed at getting a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
Arriving from Jerusalem, Warren Christopher was told by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa that Assad was not available, says a U-S State Department official said.
Christopher is expected to head back to Jerusalem, where he met Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Meanwhile heavy shelling has continued in Lebanon on the 13th day of the conflict.
For the 13th day in a row Operation Grapes of Wrath continued as before with the bombardment of Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon.
The villages of Habuch - one of the main areas of Hezbollah activity - and Iqlim al-Tuffah were among early targets.
There were no reports of any casualties but the shellings caused extensive damage to cars and buildings.
As the shells continued to rain down on Israeli targets U-S Secretary of State Warren Christopher continued his diplomatic mission to find peace in the region.
After early meetings in Jerusalem with Shimon Peres, he headed back to Damascus for further talks with President Assad.
But Assad has apparently refused to meet him, and Christopher's now probably heading back to Jerusalem.

STORYLINE:
Israel renewed airstrikes against what it said were suspected Hezbollah targets in the battered southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Thursday.
Plumes of smoke and explosions dotted the town's skyline.
There were no immediate reports of any deaths of injuries.
Following more than three weeks of Israeli attacks, most of the city's residents have fled.
Those who have refused to leave are under severe duress and now finding it increasingly difficult to find food and basic necessities.
Although some international aid has arrived, angry residents say it is not enough.
Dozens of people blocked one of the main streets in the city to make their demands heard by the local authorities whom they blame for the food shortages.
They tell us they are providing us with help but we don't see it. They are all liars and cheats. Our babies are without food and without milk, complained one man.
A member of the municipal council, who belongs to the Shiite Amal party, said the Israeli bombardment was making Hezbollah more popular than ever.
Most people now, how can I say? They are supporting Hezbollah because it is taking the role to fight against, to fight back and to push the Israelis away, Hasan Dbouk said.
The Israeli army also continued its bombardment of other parts of southern Lebanon on Thursday.
An AP Television crew in the southern town of Nabatiyeh filmed various explosions in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region.
Lebanese security officials said six missiles struck roads in the southern villages of Mlita and Ein Bouswar in the Iqlim al-Tuffah province, a highland apple-growing region where Hezbollah is believed to have offices and bases.
Israeli warplanes returned to the province hours later for additional raids, as distraught, displaced Lebanese families sought refuge in the shelters of Nabatiyeh.

An Israeli warplane raided what's believed to be a stronghold of the Shiite Moslem fundamentalist Hezbollah guerrilla group in southern Lebanon on Thursday (16/07). The fighter-bomber launched two missiles on the Okmata hilltop in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region, a cluster of Shi'ite villages east of the southern port city of Sidon at 10:30 am (0730 GMT), Lebanese police said. Minutes later the warplane fired two other air-to-ground missiles on a hill in nearby Sujud.

LEBANON: ISRAELI MILITARY AIRCRAFT ATTACK SOUTHERN LEBANON

Israeli military aircraft struck Southern Lebanon on Thursday.
The attack came after an Israeli soldier was killed and three others wounded in a clash with Hezbollah fighters.
One Lebanese woman was injured in the attack but final casualty figures have not yet been confirmed.

The Israeli air assault came after a soldier was killed in a firefight with Hezbollah guerillas -- and three others wounded.
In the initial clash, both sides exchanged machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades just across from an Israeli army outpost
at Sojod.
Shortly afterwards, Israel struck with a barrage of 155mm howitzer fire, followed by jets and helicopter gunships that reportedly hit a Hezbollah base in Iqlim al-Tuffah (Apple Province), just across from an Israeli-occupied border enclave.
Lebanese security sources said the Israelis fired at least seven air-to-surface missiles within 30 minutes in the first raid.
The jets returned later for another air strike, firing at least one more missile.
The shooting tapered off into intermittent exchanges later in the afternoon.
A Lebanese woman suffered minor shrapnel injuries when an Israeli shell struck in the village of Jebaa.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu played down the possibility of hostilities with Syria in a press conference that coincided with the visit of U-S Middle East envoy, Dennis Ross.
Ross is doing a tour of the Middle East in a bid to persuade the Israelis and Syrians to agree on the terms of renewed peace talks.

STORYLINE:
Rescue workers were working round the clock in the southern Lebanese port of Tyre on Thursday, in search of survivors believed to be trapped under the rubble of a seven-storey building in the city centre which collapsed due to a massive Israeli strike on Wednesday.
At least 13 people, including six children, were wounded in the attack.
The Israeli army believed the building housed the offices of Hezbollah's top commander in the south of Lebanon. But the building was believed to be empty at the time of the bombing.
Sixteen days of strikes have put the civilian population under severe duress.
Tyre's Jabal Amel Hospital launched an urgent appeal for the least common blood types on Thursday.
Doctor Ahmed Mrouhe said the rare blood groups O Negative and B Negative were in short supply.
The strikes have left part of the city without electricity and a group of people are volunteering to repair the cables for those who are staying in Tyre.
Thousands have been displaced and many families in Tyre are heading north by car, with white flags attached to their vehicles, in search of a respite from the relentless Israeli bombardment.
In total, 750,000 people have been driven from their homes in the country, according to the government and aid agencies.
Evacuees from southern Lebanon headed for the port city of Tyre on Thursday, a day after heavy fighting in the village of Maroun al-Ras.
One woman said she left the village on Wednesday and spent the night in Remish, before heading to Tyre on Thursday morning where she believes she will be safe.
Also in Tyre on Thursday, an Israeli helicopter fired missiles into a building believed to house Hezbollah offices. AP Television cannot verify (no confirmation) who the occupants of the house were.
The missiles hit the first floor of the building.
Three trucks carrying vegetables were also hit in the Bekaa Valley and another on a road between Syria and Beirut.
