The town has a permanent population of 5,080 as of June 2018, making it the second-largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula behind Thames.

The population of Whangamata was 3471 in the 2013 Census, a decrease of 84 from 3555 in the 2006 Census, and a decrease of 492 from 2001.
