Thames is a town at the southwestern end of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. It is located on the Firth of Thames close to the mouth of the Waihou River. The town is the seat of the Thames-Coromandel District Council. The Māori iwi are Ngāti Maru, who are descendants of Marutuahu's son Te Ngako. Ngāti Maru is part of the Ngati Marutuahu confederation of tribes or better known as Hauraki Iwi. Many people migrated to Thames at its peak, and it was soon the second-largest city in New Zealand . Several redoubts were eventually built, one of them named after the ship leading the small troop flotilla. A local headland also carries the name, together ensuring that the name became fixed.

Day 1 doing 365 days of 365 activities in New Zealand kicks off with the drive between Auckland and Thames, Coromandel. It’s the start of a gap year in New Zealand and our 365-day backpacking trip in New Zealand. The first activity is a walk in Thames, Coromandel. The walk is the Rockys Walk in Thames, which takes us to views over Thames and the coast.

We have a long journey on The Pacific Coast Highway in the Coromandel is today so we are breaking it up by checking out some of the beaches in the Coromandel. First stop is Whangamata Beach! We stop here for lunch in Whangamata with an awesome beach in the Coromandel, then we hit the Pacific Coast Highway to continue our journey.

Our final destination is Waihi Beach where we park our campervan in the Waihi Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort (with some difficulty) and go check out the famous Waihi Beach of the Coromandel. We stroll along Waihi Beach at sunset then wake up the next day to catch the famous Waihi Beach sunrise. Join us again tomorrow for New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year!
