Lake Orta is a lake in northern Italy, west of Lake Maggiore. It has been so named since the 16th century, but was previously called the Lago di San Giulio, after Saint Julius , the patron saint of the region. Its southern end is about 35 kilometres by rail, to the northwest of Novara on the main Turin-Milan line, while its north end is about 6 kilometres by rail south of the Gravellona-Toce railway station, halfway between Ornavasso and Omegna. Its scenery is characteristically Italian, while the San Giulio island has some very picturesque buildings, and takes its name from the local saint, who lived in the 4th century. Orta San Giulio is a town and comune in the Province of Novara in the Italian region of Piedmont, located about 100 kilometres northeast of Turin and about 40 kilometres northwest of Novara. The town itself is built on a promontory which juts out from the eastern bank of Lake Orta close to Isola San Giulio, an island which also falls within the municipal boundaries. The frazione Legro stands on the hill which rises behind the promontory, Corconio is some 2 kilometres further south, and again away from the lake, while Imola consists of a small number of dwellings between the two, but close to the lake on the road leading to Gozzano. A lot of people on here have labelled City Restaurant a ‘tourist trap’, but after eating at the restaurant last night, I’d have to disagree. Yes, it offers a number of deals to try and entice customers in, and our waiter was very keen to tell us about them as we walked past. However, the setting, the menu, the music and the waiter’s good nature convinced us to double back and grab a table before the restaurant filled up. Indeed, there were far more people already eating at the restaurant than any others we’d seen while seeking somewhere to eat.

My wife went for the fish, mussels and white wine meal (€15) and I ordered the fish platter (€17). The food was delivered promptly and our waiter was kind enough to fillet our sea bream at the table. All of the fish was cooked perfectly and the portions were incredibly generous. The only issue on my plate was the risotto, which was cold. I asked the waiter if it was traditionally served cold in Montenegro, and he said it varies between restaurants, which I doubted. He did offer to warm it up but I declined as it still tasted good, and the rest of the fish was cooked perfectly.

We probably wouldn’t have eaten at City Restaurant if we’d read the reviews beforehand, but our own experience was evidently a lot better than many other people’s. I’d happily recommend it.

Comprende il centro antico del capoluogo del comune attorno alla torre cilindrica un tempo con funzioni militari ora utilizzata come campanile della chiesa parrocchiale di San Michele Arcangelo.

Notizie storiche
In epoca medioevale il castello di Minucciano appartenne alla famiglia dei Malaspina; nel 1231, nell'ambito di una divisione fra fratelli, venne assegnato a Corrado, uno dei membri di quella famiglia; successivamente, nel 1346, fu venduto da Spinetta Malaspina alla Repubblica di Firenze; venne in possesso della Repubblica di Lucca dopo il 1369 che ne conservò il possesso fino alla caduta di Paolo Guinigi. Nel 1439 ritornò fiorentino fino al 1441 quando fu dominio della Repubblica lucchese fino al 1847; nel 1837 un violento terremoto danneggiò la torre del castello provocando il crollo di alcune abitazioni del centro antico.
