Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monasteries. Dega Stefanos is located in the centre of the lake and contains one of the country’s most important monasteries. On the summit, framed by walls and hidden under great trees, is the Holy Stefanos Monastery and within a small sanctuary various mummies are preserved within glazed wooden coffins and the remains of five emperors of various dynasties lie at rest. Awash is a settlement on the edge of the nature park of the same name, inhabited by the Afar, a proud and independent tribe. On market day, people from the surrounding area meet here. For the Afar, life is hard and only the strong survive. Corn, tobacco, dates and cotton are the main trading products of this region. Dromedaries, sheep and goats are bred, and pastureland is often the subject of heated disputes. A journey through Ethiopia is also a journey through time itself. A land of rich traditions, religions and myths. A country of legends and contrast that possesses one of the most colourful histories on the African continent.

Timeless Ethiopia Tour: One of the lowest places in the world
Dallol (Amharic: ዳሎል) is a locality in the Dallol woreda of northern Ethiopia. Located in Administrative Zone 2 of the Afar Region in the Afar Depression, it has a latitude and longitude of 14°14′19″N 40°17′38″E with an elevation of about 130 metres (430 ft) below sea level. The Central Statistical Agency has not published an estimate for this settlement's 2005 population; it has been described as a ghost town.
Dallol currently holds the official record for record high average temperature for an inhabited location on Earth, where an average annual temperature of 35°C (95°F) was recorded between the years 1960 and 1966. Dallol is also one of the most remote places on Earth, although paved roads to the village of Hamedela, which is close, are being built. Still, the most important mode of transport besides jeeps are the camel caravans which travel to the area to collect salt.

THE ULTIMATE EXTRATERRESTRIAL PLACE ON THE PLANET EARTH – Danakil Depression – Ethiopia
If you are curious about Extraterrestrial Life and mainly how Extraterrestrial Landscape would look like – you have just two choices. Either watch Hollywood Sci-Fi Movies which are manufactured mainly for feeble minded personalities, or to go all the way to Ethiopia’s Afar Triangle Desert particularly Danakil Depression to see “Real Stuff”.
I have heard and read about Danakil Depression many years ago – mainly then with connection with Plate Tectonics and connected amazing volcanic activities. Permanent Lava Lake of Erta Ale Volcano or Acidic Springs of Dallol Volcano were just two of the miracles “Out of this World Extraterrestrial Activities” which one can see only in one place on this planet and this place is called - Danakil Depression.
But there was a catch – at least for me – in location of Danakil Depression. North part of Ethiopia’s Afar Triangle known as Danakil Depression is The Hottest Place on planet. And since I am the one who’s favourite season is winter – and better to say “the cooler the better” – idea of spending even limited time in area where summer temperatures can go far over 50 C was really scary. (The temperature record in Danakil Depression is 63 C = 145 F – that’s one of the reasons why location is called “The Gateway To Hell”). Danakil Depression in it’s lowest place is 150 meters below the sea. This means it is one of the lowest places on Earth not covered by sea.
Another problem with traveling to Danakil Depression was that it lays very close to boarder between Ethiopia and Eritrea and because of war in the middle and end of 1990 both countries are still in state of war since only formal peace settlement was signed by both countries in December 2000 in Algiers. Killing of members of European Tourist Expedition on Erta Ale in January of 2012 put temporary stop on any travels to the area and even now I had major problem to get insurance for the trip since most insurance companies consider the boarder between Ethiopia and Eritrea as risk war zone.
However when travel activities resumed in 2014 I did not hesitate and organized my trip to Ethiopia and Danakil Depression for the end of 2015.
It takes almost 3 days to drive from Addis Ababa to Danakil Depression. For our expedition to Erta Ale, Danakil Depression, Dallol Volcano and Salty Lakes it was 9 days without any water – beside drinking water – no shower, no hygiene. But who cares!? I saw most remarkable place on Earth and experienced definitely the most exciting trip of my life which I probably will never be able to much for the rest of my days.
... and the Landscape? Beyond anything I could ever imagine! For the most of the trip through Danakil Depression I was not sure if I am still on Earth and that was the feeling I had in my heart when I was making this movie.

Northern Ethiopia
The Johannesburg Branch of the South African Archaeological Society organized a trip to the northern part of Ethiopia in 2009. A flight from Addis Ababa took the members to Axum, the former capital of the Axumite Empire, a lesser known of the great civilisations. Crossing the up to 4500 meter high Semien Mountain Range, they descended to Gondar with its medieval castles, residences of ethiopian emperors during the 16th and 17th centuries. On Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, are very interesting ancient churches and monasteries. A short flight took them to Lalibela with its world-famous rock hewn churches. They continued with 4x4 vehicles to the Afar Region in the north west of Ethiopia, a seldom visited arid desert, where they were fortunate to meet american palaeontologists at the site where Lucy the famous 3.2 million year old hominid was found in 1974. Further east lies the walled city of Harar, one of the holy cities of Islam.

In der trockenen und selten besuchten Wüste hatten sie das Glück, amerikanische Paläontologen an jenem Platz zu treffen, an dem im Jahre 1974 Lucy, der bekannte 3,2 Millionen Jahre alte Menschenaffe, gefunden wurde. Weiter östlich lag die ummauerte Altstadt der islamischen Hochburg Harar.

Erta Ale is 613 metres (2,011 ft) high, with one or sometimes two active lava lakes at the summit which occasionally overflow on the south side of the volcano. It is notable for holding the longest-existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century (1906). Volcanoes with lava lakes are very rare: there are only six in the world.
Erta Ale means smoking mountain in the local Afar language and its southernmost pit is known locally as the gateway to Hell. In 2009, it was mapped by a team from the BBC using three-dimensional laser techniques, in order for the mapping team to maintain a distance and avoid the lakes' searingly hot temperatures.
Erta Ale is centered over the east African rift system, which is a triple junction setting whose movements are resulting in the formation of a pull apart basin or rift. The volcano comprises mainly Mafic material which has been brought up to the surface caused by unroofing of the mantle due to this rift formation.
Not much is known about Erta Ale, as the surrounding terrain is some of the most inhospitable on Earth and the native Afar people have a legendary reputation for viciousness towards outsiders; one travel guide recommends hiring one or maybe two armed guards or police to visit Erta Ale. However, they welcomed and helped a team from BBC. On January 16, 2012, a group of German, Austrian and Hungarian scientists/tourists was attacked at Erta Ale. Five scientists/tourists were killed, some taken as hostages and others wounded. The Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (ARDUF) claimed responsibility for the attack and released the two kidnapped tourists in March 2012.

Ethiopia's population is highly diverse. Most of its people speak a Semitic or Cushitic language. The Oromo, Amhara, Somali and Tigreans make up more than three-quarters (¾) of the population, but there are more than 80 different ethnic groups within Ethiopia. Some of these have as few as 10,000 members. English is the most widely spoken foreign language and is taught in all secondary schools. Amharic was the language of primary school instruction but has been replaced in many areas by local languages such as Oromifa, Somali and Tigrinya.
Languages
According to the 2007 Ethiopian census, the largest first languages are: Oromo 24,929,567 speakers or 33.8% of the total population; Amharic 21,631,370 or 29.33% (official language[6]); Somali 4,609,274 or 6.25%; Tigrinya 4,324,476 or 5.86%; Sidamo 4,981,471 or 5.84%; Wolaytta 1,627,784 or 2.21%; Gurage 1,481,783 or 2.01%; and Afar 1,281,278 or 1.74%. Widely spoken foreign languages include Arabic (official), English (official; major foreign language taught in schools[6]), and Italian (spoken by European minorities)

According to the CIA Factbook the religious demography of Ethiopia is as follows; Ethiopian Orthodox 43.5%, Muslim 33.9%, Protestant 18.6%, traditional 2.6%, Catholic 0.7% other 0.7% (2007 Census).

Dallol is a volcanic crater in the Danakil Depression, Afar Region, Ethiopia.
The name Dallol come from the Afar people and means something like dissolution, and if you see the place you can understand why.
It has been formed by the intrusion of magma into salt deposits and subsequent hydrothermal activity.
Eruptions took place in Danakil Depression in 1926, forming Dallol Volcano. These craters are the lowest known volcanic craters in the world, at Apx. 45m below sea level.
ERTA ALE VOLCANO - Part 1: The Largest Permanent Lava Lake on Earth, Ethiopia (Erupting Lava Lake)
ERTA ALE LAVA LAKE VOLCANO – Danakil Depression, Ethiopia
Hidden in the middle of Danakil Depression, Afar Region of Ethiopia – The Hottest Place in the World – stands 614 meters high volcano Erta Ale. What makes this volcano so extremely rare is Lava Lake hidden in the crater in the centre of volcano caldera.
Volcanoes with lava lakes are very rare: there are only six of them in the whole world. Erta Ale is the one which is permanently active during last 100 years.
Being to be by-product of Plate Tectonics of East Africa Erta Ale sits in Danakil Depression which is part of East African Rift – scar in Earth crust which is slowly tearing Africa apart. Three tectonic plates – Nubian Plate, Somalia Plate and Arabic Plate are moving apart in pace of 2.5 cm/year speed high enough to calculate that in 10 Million year Africa will loose its Horn of Africa which will become new continent in Indian Ocean.
As consequence of separation of the plates there is major depression/valley in North Part of Ethiopia’s Afar Region calls Afar Triangle. Earth crust is so thin in the area – which lays up to 150 below Sea level – that area is penetrated by number of volcanoes and is pronounced to major earthquakes.
Erta Ale – beside Nyiragongo in Democratic Republic of Congo – was for years high on my wish list of places which I have to visit. After 2012 my dream was shuttered and put on hold since number of tourists was killed on the edge of volcano as a result of long lasting dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea. However last year expeditions to Erta Ale resumed – this time under heavy military escorts - so I could realised my dream and visit Erta Ale in the end of 2015.
In usual case crater of Erta Ale Lava Lave has first terrace about 20 meters down in the crater and additional 20 meter down in the pit there is surface of Lava Lake. I was very fortunate to visit Erta Ale in one of its most active period in ages when level of the Lake was elevated all the way to the edge of the crater and was just less than 2 meters below level of overflow to the bottom of the Erta Ale caldera. Volcanic activities were enormous 24 hours every single day so there is no surprise that majority of my 3 days spend on Erta Ale were dedicated to observation of the lake.
Even everybody is aiming to see volcano in the night – since visual sensation is beside description – it is very difficult to make high quality pictures from night since contrast between darkness and hot lava boiling in up to 1,200 C is impossible to catch on camera. Day pictures are much more manageable.
Another advantage of Erta Ale is the fact that is located in Ethiopia where nobody will tell you what you can and can’t do by the volcano. So decision how close can I go to the volcano was resting entirely with me – and of course I went as closed as my camera could manage. Heat was unsustainable – but I would say picture and movies are quite OK.
First part of the movie “ERUPTING LAVA LAKE” was film mainly during the days and twilight, while second part “THE NIGHT SHOW” was filmed in the darkness. I hope you’ll enjoy both part as much as I enjoyed all 3 days on the top of this spectacular volcano!
