When you’re in the Alentejo, you’re far from the hustle and bustle of fast food. You can appreciate every seasoning refined over the centuries. You can enjoy nature’s offerings, simple ingredients and rural cooking. You can pay tribute to the Alentejo’s heritage of olive oil, cheese, wines and sweets.
We take the wild asparagus that grows in the fields of the Alentejo and combine it masterfully with eggs from hens raised in the open air to achieve one of the most delicious and iconic dishes of this region.
We sauté sprouts picked from the backyard, mix them with sun-ripened tomatoes and yesterday’s bread and produce the unassuming ‘migas’, a culinary masterpiece scented with aromatic herbs.
We walk through the streets of the towns, surrounded by a landscape of whitewashed houses, golden plains and the ancestral knowledge of people who work with their hands and with love.
This is the Alentejo.

MONCHIQUE, situada na Serra de Monchique, que separa o Algarve da região fronteiriça do Alentejo, entre os picos de Fóia e Picota, é uma encantadora vila de ruas íngremes e calcetadas com casas caiadas, sendo o ponto de partida ideal para visitar as nascentes e descobrir as montanhas. É de salientar a arquitectura religiosa em Monchique onde podemos visitar a Igreja Matriz de Monchique construída entre os séculos XV--XVI que possui uma porta manuelina, a Igreja de São Sebastião construída em finais do século XVI e o Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro. Este belo convento franciscano foi construído no século XVII, o qual Ficou gravemente danificado durante o sismo de 1755 e após a abolição das ordens religiosas em 1834, os seus altares e estátuas foram levadas para outras igrejas de Monchique e Aljezur. MONCHIQUE, located in the Serra de Monchique, Algarve that separates the border region of Alentejo, between peak and Fóia Picota, is a charming town of steep streets and cobbled streets with whitewashed houses, is the ideal starting point to visit the springs and discover the mountains. It is noted for its religious in Monchique where we visit the Igreja Matriz de Monchique built between the XV-XVI has a door that Manuel I, the Igreja de São Sebastião built in the late sixteenth century and the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro. This beautiful Franciscan monastery was built in the seventeenth century, which became severely damaged during the earthquake of 1755 and after the abolition of religious orders in 1834, their altars and statues were taken to other churches in Aljezur and Monchique. It is possible to see most of the attractions in Lisbon, Portugal in one day. The hop on hop off bus does an amazing job pretty much taking you everywhere you need to be and get off to the site you like the most. Please buy tickets for specific attractions ahead of time due to the lines being so long during high season.

Merida
Merida is a lovely smaller Spanish city for a peaceful get-away combined with cultural sight-seeing.
The town itself is the best part, with a curious mix of architecture from all ages. Palm trees decorate the town square where the entire population, (it would seem), appears each evening for pleasant company and a cup of coffee.
Numerous Roman monuments are scattered throughout Merida, including Trajan's arch, a classic temple, the world's longest extant Roman bridge, a Moorish citadel, a Roman amphitheater, and a fine example of a Roman theater (for plays).
If you're traveling through western Spain or eastern Portugal, Merida is worth a visit.

Destination: Alentejo (Portugal)
The Alentejo is an extensive area that covers about a third of Portugal. To the north it is bordered by the Tejo River and to the south by the mountains of the Algarve. To the east shares the border with Spain and to the west it opens on the Atlantic Ocean.
Essentially rural and sparsely populated, it offers a flat, well-maintained landscape. Its beauty and the abundance and quality of its monuments, architecture and gastronomy make the Alentejo a perfect place for a tourist destination.
The Alentejo landscape invites you to choose the secondary roads instead of the highways, as they are the best way to appreciate the plain, its endless cork oaks, its vineyards, fields and olive groves. They also allow contact with their people, hospitable by nature.

Praia de Mira and Barrinha lagoon aerial view
Originally a fishing village, Praia da Mira has become an increasingly popular holiday destination. Fishing continues to be the main activity here, using the traditional, brightly coloured boats with their long, curved bows, although tractors have now replaced the ox that were originally used for pulling in the nets. A few examples still remain of the typical fishermen’s wooden houses known as “palheiros”, although these are now interspersed with the cafés and restaurants that have sprung up to cater for the visitors who seek the gastronomic speciality that is, naturally, fresh fish.
The back of this fishing village gives on to a natural freshwater lagoon called the Barrinha. The differing landscape in the short distance that separates the coastal village from the inland town is remarkable: it progresses from the forceful waves of the Atlantic sea and the wide expanse of sand dunes to the lagoon and pine forests surrounding the town.

Guimarães is one of the country's most historic cities, and its World Heritage medieval streets with well-preserved monuments make it one of the most attractive places to visit in Portugal.
The imposing medieval castle Guimaraes Castle with eight crenellated towers 28m (92ft) high, was built in the 10th century to protect the population from attacks by the Moors and the Normans. It was then extended to its present size in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, who was baptized in the small Romanesque chapel next to the castle.
The Dukes of Bragança Palace, was built in the 15th century as a medieval palace, with 39 unusual brick chimneys showing strong Northern European influence.
Inside is an impressive banqueting hall with a splendid wooden ceiling, and an extensive collection of portraits, furniture, carpets, and porcelain dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.
