In this video walk I hike to Dürnstein Castle on a sunny Saturday in spring. Located in the wonderful Wachau Valley in Austria, the town and the castle are a famous tourist spot.
After following the road through the old town of Dürnstein, I take a somewhat hidden passage to get to the Danube river. Sadly, I couldn't access the town's famous blue church because due to ongoing construction works.
After that I follow the path leading up to the old stronghold. The hike to Dürnstein Castle didn't take very long, even though the way was quite steep. The amazing view over the Wachau Valley was well worth the effort.

Schloss Artstetten blickt auf eine wechselvolle Geschichte zurück. Es diente als Familiensitz und Sommerresidenz der kaiserlichen Familie und wurde zur letzten Ruhestätte für Thronfolger Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand und seine Gemahlin, Sophie Herzogin von Hohenberg, die beide 1914 in Sarajevo einem fanatisierten Jugendlichen zum Opfer fielen.
Der architektonisch reizvolle Bau, der urkundlich erstmals im 13. Jahrhundert erwähnt wird, wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mehrfach umgestaltet, bis er seine heutige endgültige Form fand: ein quadratischer Mittelbau flankiert von sieben charakteristischen Türmen.
Seit 1982 befindet sich im Schloss das Erzherzog-Franz-Ferdinand-Museum, das in der permanenten Ausstellung Für Herz & Krone dem Besucher Einblick in das Leben des Thronfolgers und seiner Familie gewährt. In einem jährlich wechselnden Sonderthema wird jeweils ein Schwerpunkt seines facettenreichen Lebens aufgegriffen und dem Besucher präsentiert.

Wachau Valley, Austria - October 2018 (GH5)
The Danube river formed the Wachau Valley through Austria. It is one of the most scenic sections of the Danube between Melk and Krems and has been listed as a UNESCO world Heritage Site. Castle ruins, terraced vineyards, and old churches line the river as it passes through small towns like Dürnstein and Spitz. River cruises pass each other as passengers soak in the view while the Danube winds through the valley.
This video is just a taste of the beauty of the Wachau Valley.

We would like to share with you one of our recommended hotels in Austria
The Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg
Nestled on the lake on the back (west) side of the historic city of Salzburg, is the dramatic complex of Schloss Leopoldskron.
Drive through the gates and on one side by the salmon hued Meierhof and the stately Schloss Leopoldskron that is positioned to face directly onto the lake.
Guestrooms are found in both buildings. In the Meierhof you will find the reception, a lovely little coffee-bar, a large reference room where internet connected computers are set out for guest use and fifty-five guest rooms.
The guestrooms are standard in size, have recently been redecorated; enjoy modern amenities and either overlook a central courtyard or odd numbered rooms enjoy views of the lake. Third floor rooms enjoy the ambiance of angled roofs.
Public rooms and the twelve guestroom suites located in the 18th century Schloss Leopoldskron are accessed by climbing a massive wide stone stairway.
They are grand in size and opulent with beautiful old wooden floors, dramatic ornate walls and deep set windows open onto gorgeous views of the park and lake.
On the second floor the Great Hall, illuminated by dramatic chandeliers and warmed by the dramatic fireplace in winter, is used as the dining room -- both for breakfast and often dinner buffets for the invited groups.
Regardless of whether your accommodation is located in the Meierhof or in the Schloss Leopoldskron you are welcome to settle in the public rooms of the schloss and it is a must to visit the incredible, architecturally beautiful library and to walk the grounds made famous by scenes from the Sound of Music.
Although, not at the heart of the city, we enjoyed the beauty of the lakeside setting; felt less like a tourist as we strolled the myriad of paths with the locals; opted not to hassle with our car and found it just a 20 minute walk into the city and for dinner we appreciated being able to walk the short distance around the lake to the pretty pavilion with is reasonably priced Italian cuisine and menu.
