Aviemore is a town and tourist resort, situated within the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Badenoch and Strathspey committee area, within the Highland council area. The town is popular for skiing and other winter sports, and for hill-walking in the Cairngorm Mountains. There are excellent views of the Cairngorms from various places within the town, especially from the railway station. The Aviemore stone circle is located within a residential neighbourhood of the town.

The Cairngorms are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands of Scotland closely associated with the mountain of the Cairn Gorm. The Cairngorms became part of Scotland's second national park on 1 September 2003. Although the Cairngorms give their name to, and are at the heart of, the Cairngorms National Park, they only form one part of the national park, alongside other hill ranges such as the Angus Glens and the Monadhliath, and lower areas like Strathspey. The Cairngorms consists of high plateaux at about 1000–1200 m above sea level, above which domed summits rise to around 1300 m. Loch an Eilein is a small irregular shaped, freshwater loch in the Rothiemurchus Forest about 5 km south of Aviemore, Scotland. Loch an Eilein comes from the Scottish Gaelic and means 'Loch of the island'. The loch is considered to be beautiful and walks around it are popular.In the late 18th and early 19th century, the loch was used mainly for two things. On the banks of the loch there is a limestone kiln where the lime stone was collected from a rockface looking over the loch. Also loggers used the connecting river to float logs down to the wood-treating factories downstream. Rob Roy and other cattle rustlers used the loch, and one side of the loch is called 'Robbers Way'. The loch is home to a watersports centre with kayaking, sailing and windsurfing among the activities available. There is also a yacht club and cycling routes around the loch. Craigellachie National Nature Reserve lies to the west of the village of Aviemore in Strathspey, in the central Highlands of Scotland. Abernethy Forest is a remnant of the Caledonian Forest in Strathspey, in the Highland council area of Scotland. Aviemore is a town in the Cairngorms National Park, in the Scottish Highlands. It’s known for its close proximity to the secluded lochs, ancient forest, mountain trails and ski runs of the surrounding parkland. Near town, the funicular at the CairnGorm Mountain resort has panoramic views of the Cairngorms mountain range. Southwest, Highland Wildlife Park’s inhabitants include Scottish wildcats and capercaillie birds.

Aviemore lies on the B9152 (the old A9 road since the main road from Inverness to Perth was rebuilt further west in 1980). Aviemore railway station is on the Highland Main Line and Aviemore is also the southern terminus of the Strathspey Railway, a heritage railway.

The Cairngorm Mountain Railway, which opened in 2001, is the highest railway in the United Kingdom. The two-kilometre long funicular ascends the northern slopes of Cairn Gorm, the United Kingdom's sixth-highest mountain, serving the Cairngorm Mountain ski resort. The route and ski area are located within the Cairngorms National Park, the largest National Nature Reserve in Britain, located near Aviemore in the Highland council area of Scotland.

Grantown-on-Spey is a town in the Highland Council Area, historically within the county of Moray. Grantown on Spey was founded in 1765 as a planned settlement on a low plateau at Freuchie beside the river Spey at the northern edge of the Cairngorm mountains, about 20 miles south east of Inverness (35 miles by road). Originally called simply Grantown after Sir James Grant, on Spey was added by the burgh council in 1898.

There are no rail services to Grantown. The closest main line stations are Aviemore and Carrbridge from which trains travel North/South between Inverness and the central belt. There is also a station at Forres from which trains run between Inverness and Aberdeen. The Strathspey Railway is a heritage railway which currently runs between Aviemore and Broomhill (nr Nethy Bridge) via Boat of Garten. There is a proposal to extend this railway to Grantown.

The town is twinned with Notre-Dame-de-Monts in the Vendée, Pays-de-la-Loire, France, and Grant Town, West Virginia in the United States. Since 2011, Grantown-on-Spey has been home to Shinty club Strathspey Camanachd. There is a small museum located in Burnfield Avenue near one of the town's three free car-parks.
