The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila , and houses around 60 monks. Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe. Ledenika is a cave in the Northwestern parts of the Balkan Mountains, 16 km away from the Bulgarian city of Vratsa. Its entrance is approximately 830 m above sea level. The cave features an abundance of galleries and impressive karst formations including stalactites and stalagmites. It was first discovered around the beginning of the 20th century and has been open to tourists since 1961. Ledenika Peak on Graham Land in Antarctica is named after the cave, in recognition of its cultural importance.

The most ancient temple in Bulgaria

Once upon a time, 30-40 centuries b.c.,
in the Mediterranean, on the island of Sardinia,
there lived people, obsessed by observing the stars.
They were travelers,
travelling between places and times,
knowing remarkable things about the universe,
building hundreds of temples to praise the gods,
all of them being exactly orientated to specific stars.

A small group of these people, called Nuraghi,
came and settled on the Balkans
by 12th century b.c.
They built such a temple, which sunk into oblivion,
but remained intact to this day.

Some people believe that these temples were in fact
ancient telescopes, resembling the modern ones.
The strange thing about them being
that nowadays you can use them too,
only having to apply a concave mirror.

Why were the ancient people so involved
in watching the real stars,
unlike modern people who stare at TV stars
and worship imagined surrounding things ?

In the autumn of 2013,
a group of 20 brave explorers,
armed with their bikes,
tracked the leads to a forgotten and lost
ancient megalitic temple near the town of
Breznik, Bulgaria.
In those misty days and woods
they had experiences, which they will never
forget.....
