The city is located at the confluence of the Reuss, Aare, and Limmat, with the Aare flowing through the city's old town. It is located approximately 16 kilometers from the cantonal capital of Aarau; 28 kilometers from Zürich; and about 45 kilometers from Basel. Brugg is the Swiss German word for bridge .     Stein am Rhein is a historic town and a municipality in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland. The town has a well-preserved medieval centre, retaining the ancient street plan. The site of the city wall, and the city gates are preserved, though the former city wall now consists of houses. The medieval part of the town has been pedestrianised and many of the medieval buildings are painted with beautiful frescoes. The official language of Stein is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.
