Central Equatoria State was one of the original ten states of South Sudan. With an area of 43,033 km², it was the smallest of the original South Sudanese states. Its previous name was Bahr al Jabal, named after a tributary of the White Nile that flows through the state. It was renamed to its present name of Central Equatoria in the first Interim Legislative Assembly on 1 April 2005 under the government of Southern Sudan. Central Equatoria seceded from Sudan as part of the Republic of South Sudan on 9 July 2011. The former state's capital of Juba is also the national capital of South Sudan. The state split into three smaller states on 2 October 2015.

1. St.Theresa Cathedral Juba
The St. Theresa Cathedral or Cathedral of Juba, is the name given to a religious building in the Unity Avenue in Bahr al Jabal in the district of Kotor in the town of Juba, capital of the African country of South Sudan.It serves as the seat of the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Juba (Latin: Archidioecesis Iubaensis, created on December 12, 1974 by Pope Paul VI by bull Cum in Sudania. Its construction began in 1952. During the civil war in southern Sudan about 5,000 people took refuge in the cathedral in Juba, which was kept for days by violent clashes between rival factions of the national army.

All Saints Cathedral in Juba, South Sudan
As the Episcopal Church of Sudan, All Saints is Juba's main church. Built in 1959, it holds daily services in Arabic, English and Zande. In recent years, growing congregations have struggled to be accommodated in All Saints. In early 2013, plans were announced to build a bigger cathedral that could accommodate 3,000 worshippers. The original All Saints Cathedral is expected to be put to other church-related uses in the future.

Still coming to terms with its new status as an independent country, South Sudan has built a few tourist attractions to offer its visitors. Nor does it have much in the way of infrastructure and overall facilities. That said, it is certainly a tourist destination to watch out for in the future, with much promise in store.

Those who do plan to visit South Sudan will be rewarded with a glimpse of an Africa that is still remote and relatively unchanged since ancient times.

Many of the principal attractions understandably live within the spreading capital city, Juba, where particular highlights include both the imposing Cathedral of All Saints and the rather stately Presidential Palace.
