(EN) Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan Province in Southwest China. A prefecture-level city, it is the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of Yunnan, and is the seat of the provincial government. It is also home to several universities, museums, galleries and other important economic, cultural, and educational institutions. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming as well. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road. Located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level and at a latitude just north of the Tropic of Cancer. It covers an area of 21,473 km2}} and its urban area covers 2,081 km². Kunming has population of 6,432,2120 including 3,055,000 in the urban area and is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.
Kunming consists of an old, previously walled city, a modern commercial district, residential and university areas. The city has an astronomical observatory, and its institutions of higher learning include Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University and a medical college. On the outskirts is a famed bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty. Kunming was formerly called Yunnanfu (云南府; literally meaning Yunnan Capital) until the 1920s.
Its economic importance derives from its geographical position. Positioned near the border with Southeastern Asian countries, serving as a transportation hub in Southwest China, linking by rail to Vietnam and by road to Burma and Laos. This positioning also makes it an important trade center in this region of the nation. It also houses some manufacturing, chiefly copper, though some other chemicals, machinery, textiles, paper and cement take key. Though having a nearly 2,400 year history, its modern prosperity dates only from 1910, when the railroad from Hanoi was built. The city has continued to develop rapidly under China's modernization efforts. Kunming's streets have widened while office buildings and housing projects develop at a fast pace. Kunming has been designated a special tourism center and as such sports a proliferation of high-rises and luxury hotels. (wikipedia)

Kunming, Yunnan Minority Village - China Travel Channel
The Yunnan Minority Village (云南民族村 Yunnan Minzu Cun) is on the northeastern shore of the Dian Lake in Kunming. 21 national minority groups live in Yunnan. In order to make the customs, traditions and living habits of these minorities accessible to a wider segment of the population, the Yunnan Nationalities Village was built. Here, members of minority groups can present their way of life. A wide variety of customs and traditions are explained.
For instance, it was the custom among the Wa people that following a good harvest, it was requested that the head of a man with a long beard be placed at the village entrance. Today a buffalo head is used instead.
Among the Bai peoples, houses were built facing east, whereas in the rest of China the custom was to build houses facing south. Village squares were often built as a symbolic calendar.
In the Yunnan Minority Village, many folk dances and song presentations are offered. For the Yi nationality, the tiger is sacred. This can be seen on hat coverings or the Yi’s main village square.

Das Yunnan Nationalitätendorf liegt am Nordostufer des Dian-Sees in Kunming. Am Eingang werden die Besucher mit traditionellen Tänzen begrüßt. In der Provinz Yunnan leben einundzwanzig nationale Minderheiten. Um die Sitten, Bräuche und Lebensgewohnheiten dieser Minderheiten einer breiteren Bevölkerungsschicht zugänglich zu machen, hat man ein “Nationalitätendorf” gebaut. Angehörige der diversen Minderheiten präsentieren das ursprüngliche Leben. Unterschiedlichste Sitten und Gebräuche werden erläutert.
So war es bei den Wa Brauch, zur Erbittung einer guten Ernte, den Kopf eines Mannes mit langem Bart am Dorfeingang abzulegen. Heute erfüllt ein Büffelkopf diese Aufgabe.
Die Bai bauen ihre Häuser mit dem Eingang nach Osten, während es in China Brauch war die Häuser nach Süden auszurichten. Dorfplätze wurden oft als symbolischer Kalender gebaut.
Dorfbewohner bieten des Öfteren Volkstänze und Gesänge dar. Für die Yi-Nationalität ist der Tiger heilig, was an Hutbedeckungen oder am Hauptplatz der Yi erkenntlich ist.

Sanxiantai Dragon Bridge | The Footbridge of Three Immortals
Sanxiantai is a small island on the east coast of Taiwan, of Chenggong Township, Taitung County. Strange rock formations are everywhere, including three huge rocks that by legend are the three immortal saints Lyu-Dongbin, Li-Tieguai and He-Xiangu. Sanxiantai or Sansiantai literally means Three Saints Island and can only be reached by crossing an eight-arch bridge designed to look like waves. The weather was horrible when we visited Sanxiantai, but thankfully, the sun peeked a little and blessed us with its rays, enough for some light to illuminate the waters of this majestic sight. Little Ups & Downs, where this Eight Arches Bridge takes you over the ocean to a small island. It's quite the view, even with the unwelcoming rain.
The Three Saints had taken their rest they left three footprints. These are the three massive rocks dominate the small uninhabited island. The island was once connected by a neck of land to the rest of Taiwan but over the millennia this wore away. The striking arched bridge that connects the island to the mainland is not, however, as old as you might think. It was built in 1987 – before that anyone without a boat wishing to visit the island had to wait till low tide and wade over. The bridge’s eight arches, gently undulating, capture the rhythm of a Chinese dragon as it traverses the space between land and island. It is known locally as The Eight Leaped Bridge. It is reminiscent of the architecture of ancient Chinese temples, indicating that this is a place which should be revered by those who visit.
The bridge and island are locally very famous and many tourists come to take in the views and enjoy the pristine natural surroundings. However, situated in the relatively isolate county of Taitung (which has a population of little more than a quarter of a million), the place is never overwhelmed with visitors. Although Taiwan’s twenty two million people are predominantly Han Chinese the area around Sansiantai is home to good sized communities of two aboriginal peoples known as the Amis and the Yami but with others from the remaining 12 happily mingling in as well.
