County Londonderry , also known as County Derry, is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland. Prior to the partition of Ireland, it was one of the counties of the Kingdom of Ireland from 1613 onward and then of the United Kingdom after the Acts of Union 1800. Adjoining the north-west shore of Lough Neagh, the county covers an area of 2,074 km² and today has a population of about 247,132. Since 1972, the counties in Northern Ireland, including Londonderry, have no longer been used by the state as part of the local administration.     Castlerock is a seaside village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is situated five miles west of Coleraine, and is part of Causeway Coast and Glens district. It is very popular with summer tourists, having numerous apartment blocks and three caravan sites. Castlerock Golf Club has both 9 and 18-hole links courses bounded by the beach, the River Bann and the Belfast to Derry railway line. The village had a recorded population of 1,287 people in the 2011 Census, and currently has a popular local football team called Villagers FC.

A short walk leads to Benone Strand, seven miles of beach and sand dunes on the north coast of Northern Ireland between Castlerock and the Magilligan peninsula, most of the distance between the mouth of the River Bann and Lough Foyle. It is one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland, and recipient of the European Blue Flag and Seaside Award.
