Over the past 100 years the population of Netherlands has increased by around 10 million. In order to provide accommodation for everyone, we have built millions of houses. We now live in centuries-old canal houses, in new housing estates, or on the water in house boats.

Dutch abandoned buildings and urban decay - The Netherlands from above
We do not like decay, but how do we deal with it? In the Netherlands we do not like decay. If an old building does not get a monument status, it's ripe for demolition. But because a completely landed and cleaned country also gives us the shakes, we make room for exceptions. The island of Tiengemeten is returned to nature. Tourists are guided around to see natural decay. There must be places that are authentic, as authentic as the 1930s home with the stained-glass windows in which so many still live. A former factory director cherishes the memories of his factory, whois now abandoned and decaying. And then there is also our fight against the physical decline, which takes on ever bigger forms. We go running in masses, as if time is on our heels. Decay may come, but it should not get too close to us.
The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. The Netherlands from above season 2 tells us the story of seeing and taking opportunities, falling and rising up again, reinventing the wheel again and again. Where the first series was an ode to the makeable Netherlands, this second series is an ode to our resilience.

The Dutch and their borders - The Netherlands from above
How do we draw our borders - from the national borders to the backyard fence? Behind the national borders we designed an ingenious system of defense works formed by a waterline. Now that the threat of war seems far away, Defense marines and military police train in a Groningen village for missions in war zones. But within the borders of the country, the demarcation continues. We separate fresh water from salt water, and overcome the consequences by importing and deploying thousands of minuscule fish into our inland waterways. On the market, the market master keeps a close and inexorable eye on whether the stand holder is staying at his assigned place. And when neighbors fight about the place of the new fence, the surveyor is turned on to settle the dispute. On the beach we put our spot off with a towel. Demarcation is in the genes.

On our very first trip to South Africa we spent one day in Stellenbosch where we did a wine tour and hit up a total of 5 wineries. It was an action packed day but we knew we had only seen a fraction of what this place has to offer and we were itching to return! Fast forward two years, and we found ourselves with an invitation to come and experience Stellenbosch, this time with a week to spare. Naturally we said yes! This being the winelands meant that our itinerary was wine heavy, but we also got to see sample the food, visit the markets, check out the nightlife and get close to nature. The following is our travel guide to Stellenbosch, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, and join us on this ride!
In between all the feasting and vineyard hopping, we also found a bit of time to explore Stellenbosch itself. Stellenbosch is a charming town located in the Western Cape, and it’s the second oldest European settlement in the province after Cape Town. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.
And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!
And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. As always, we hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Stellenbosch. Program maker Michael Schaap, dressed as a pre-war ethnologist, and calling himself the Pigeonhole man goes on field research within the world of different groups for Anthropology of the Dutch. He explicitly searches for written and unwritten laws, rules, codes and taboos.
In this last episode of Anthropology of the Dutch, the Pigeonhole man goes in search of the heart of the Rotterdammers and the mixes among the 170 ethnicities that the city has.
