Juneau is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2000 census, the City had a population of 30,711. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level below steep mountains about 3,500 to 4,000 feet high. Atop these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of these, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the local road system.
This video begins as we sail into Juneau's harbor on the Sapphire Princess. After disembarking the ship I take the tramway to the top of Mount Roberts for fantastic views of the Gastineau Channel and the city of Juneau. Next I journey out to Mendenhall Glacier before returning to the city and sailing away.

Gastineau Channel is a channel between the mainland of the U.S. state of Alaska and Douglas Island in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. It separates Juneau on the mainland side from Douglas (now part of Juneau), on Douglas Island. The first European to sight the channel was Joseph Whidbey early in August 1794, first from the south and later from the west.[1] It was probably named for John Gastineau, an English Civil Engineer and Surveyor. Alaska, known as America's last frontier and the North Star state, is home to frozen landscapes and towering mountain regions. Juneau, the state capital, is one of the southernmost Alaskan cities in a region known as the Inside Passage. Fjords, glaciers, and icebergs dominate the seascape, attracting glacier hikers, kayakers, explorers, whale watchers, and other thrill seekers. Many cruise lines offer Alaskan cruises and begin at Vancouver Island and go as far north as Glacier Bay National Park, giving tourists a view of the seas not seen from land. One of the most popular tourist areas in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier, known for it's ice caves and glacier trekking opportunities. California is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous U.S. state, home to 1 out of 8 Americans, and is the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican State of Baja California to the south. The Grizzly Bear: (aka Brown Bear) can range 6-7 feet in length, weigh 200-850 lbs, live approximately 20-25 years and can travel at 35 mph!
