Around Town: Beaufort
Beaufort has seen a lot in its long, colorful life.
This coastal community, established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (only Bath and Edenton are older). In the three centuries since its founding, pirates, freed slaves, fishermen, and a host of other travelers have all sought shelter in this quiet corner of Carteret County.
Today, some 4,000 people live there year-round; come summertime, this town swells with folks visiting from across the state and around the world.

Swansboro, North Carolina, known as the Friendly City by the Sea, is a quaint, historic town located on the North Carolina Coast boarding both the IntraCoastal Waterway and the White Oak River. With water, water, water all around (and the Atlantic Ocean mere minutes away,) it's safe to assume that water sports are the number one activity in the area…and there are plenty to pick from!
Walk through downtown Swansboro on any given day and you're likely to see any number of kayakers and paddle-boarders making their way through the Intracoastal Waterway headed towards the many scenic beaches along Bogue Inlet. Others may want to fish…or water ski…or just cruise up and down the White Oak River. If you're more of a land-lover, Swansboro loves YOU, too.
Swansboro has historical sites to discover, eclectic shops to explore, and lots of 'family-friendly' recreation like biking, hiking, camping, and outdoor concerts…just to name a few! And, of course, it's always OK to do a little bit of NOTHIN'! After all, you are at the coast!
