We are traveling from Thessaloniki to Ohrid in Macedonia. Edessa is just on our way and we could see already huge waterfall from far away. We drove into the city and to famous waterfalls in the city.

Later, under the Byzantine Empire, Edessa benefited from its strategic location, controlling the Via Egnatia as it enters the Pindus mountains, and became a center of medieval Greek culture, famed for its strong walls and fortifications.In the modern period, Edessa was one of Greece's industrial centers until the middle of the 20th century, with many textile factories operating in the city and its immediate vicinity. Today however its economy mainly relies on services and tourism. Edessa hosts most of the administrative services of the Pella regional unit, as well as some departments of the Thessaloniki-based University of Macedonia.

Thessaloniki (Greek: Θεσσαλονίκη , also known as Thessalonica and Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Central Macedonia as well as the capital of the Decentralized Administration of Macedonia and Thrace. Its honorific title is Συμπρωτεύουσα (Symprotévusa), literally co-capital, and stands as a reference to its historical status as the Συμβασιλεύουσα (Symvasilévousa), co-reigning city of the Byzantine Empire, alongside Constantinople.
According to the 2011 census the municipality of Thessaloniki today has a population of 322,240, while the Thessaloniki Urban Area (the contiguous built up area forming the City of Thessaloniki) has a population of 790,824; making it the fifth largest and most populated city in the Balkans and the second most populated city that is not a capital. Furthermore, the Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area extends over an area of 1,455.62 km2 (562.02 sq mi) and its population in 2011 reached a total of 1,006,730 inhabitants.

Founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, Thessaloniki's history spans some 2,300 years. The earliest known letter by Paul the Apostle was written to the early Christian church in Thessaloniki and is identified in the New Testament as First Thessalonians; a later letter to the same church follows in the Christian Bible as Second Thessalonians.
An important metropolis by the Roman period, Thessaloniki was the second largest and wealthiest city of the Byzantine Empire. Mount Athos - Greece HD Travel Channel
Mount Athos is a monastic republic, which under international law belongs to Greece, but it is managed autonomously. The access for women is strictly prohibited - out of reverence for the Virgin Mary. In recent years, the modernization of the monasteries were funded by the EU with 150 million EUR, although it is rumored that the assets of the monasteries could cover the Greek debt. Furthermore the monks are not always picky in their choice of methods. During the annual election of the supreme chairman, truncheons were used and to declare opposition, a monastery was occupied, too. At present, approx. 2.000 monks live on Mount Athos.
Apart from that, the monasteries around the holy Mount Athos are worth seeing. They house art historically unique objects, such as icons, manuscripts, frescoes and relics. The monasteries are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The steep northern flanks of the 2,000 m high Mount Athos are visible over a long distance.

Der Heilige Berg Athos ist eine Mönchsrepublik, die völkerrechtlich zu Griechenland gehört, aber autonom verwaltet wird.
Frauen ist der Zutritt auf das Strengste untersagt -- aus Ehrfurcht vor der Gottesmutter Maria. In den letzten Jahren wurden Modernisierungen der Klosteranlagen von der EU mit 150 Mio Euro gefördert, obwohl man munkelt, dass die Vermögenswerte der Klöster die griechischen Staatsschulden decken könnten. Auch sonst sind die Mönche in der Wahl ihrer Methoden nicht immer wählerisch. Bei der jährlichen Wahl des obersten Vorsitzenden wurden auch schon Schlagstöcke zu Hilfe genommen und aus Opposition ein Kloster besetzt. Ca. 2.000 Mönche leben derzeit in Athos.
Unabhängig davon sind die Klosteranlagen rund um den heiligen Berg Athos äußerst sehenswert und beherbergen kunsthistorisch einzigartige Gegenstände, wie Ikonen, Handschriften, Fresken und Reliquien. Die Klöster sind Teil des UNESCO-Welterbes.
Weithin sichtbar sind die steilen Nordflanken des über 2.000 m hohen Berges Athos.
