HOME | MY STORY

What is home? Since I´ve been living abroad from Germany the last four years, I was asking myself this question quite often. I was always wondering what home really means. What does it mean to me? Is there an explanation? Or is the meaning of home for everyone different? The first time I really thought about it was when I skyped with my mom and grandparents during my stay in Malaysia. My grandma said: “You always say “home” when you´re talking about Kuala Lumpur, that shows me you´re happy. I´m glad to hear that – as long as you call this place your home, I´m also happy.” And so I realized – yes it´s my new home. The same happened before when I moved to Halle an der Saale and Magdeburg in Germany. Even if it wasn`t far away from Ermsleben, my first home, both of these places were new homes to me. And so it was the same with Canada, Vietnam, and China. When I was back “home” in Ermsleben to visit my family and friends during the Spring Festival this year, I realized that all these places I´ve lived before – are so special. It was time to make a movie! When I created my first ideas for this movie, I realized that everything of it also tells the story of my life so far. Because obviously, home is always a connection to our life. So the movie also shows my journey through life until June 2018.

This video is not about cinematic footage or high-quality clips. It´s about the story & adventures of my life. And so - also about my creative ideas in every way, things that I learn(t) and everything that´s part of my journey through life, to reach the ultimate goal. (Which I don´t have yet.) It never took me so much time to create a movie before. Planning, writing, voice-over recording, creating for the first time almost all of the titles with After Effects, make 2D pictures look like 3D, MASKING! – it was a hell lot of masking and some effects like the “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” homage also took quite a bit time. BUT – nothing was so time-consuming like finding and sorting out all the pictures and videos. Mommy and our neighbor Andreas helped me to get some pictures from me as a kid when there was no digital way to save your memories – that also took some time for them. As much time-consuming, it was as much fun it was. Because I reflected my whole life with that movie and spent the last few weeks reminisce about it.

You can´t always capture everything in the best quality– but you can at least save all the memories of your life with point-and-shoot cameras, camcorders or phones. Just do it – and CREATE something unique – the story of YOUR LIFE!And last but not least – a big thank you to all the people that have been part of this movie and my life - and you the viewer.
