St Mary's Church

Felpham is a village and civil parish in the Arun District of West Sussex, England. Although sometimes considered part of the urban area of greater Bognor Regis, it is a village and civil parish in its own right, having an area of 4.26 km² with a population of 9611 people that is still growing . The population at the 2011 Census was 9,746.Felpham lies on the B2259 coastal road. The 12th century Anglican parish church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There is also a Methodist church close to the three-way junction of Felpham Way, Flansham Lane and Middleton Road, in the east of the village.

Sir Frederick Dixon Dixon-Hartland, 1st Baronet was an antiquary, banker and a Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1881 to 1909. Hartland was born in a small rural village, Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire, or close to Evesham, Worcestershire the son of Nathaniel Hartland and his wife Eliza Dixon of dissenting Christian sects, termed at the time nonconformists. He was educated at nearby Cheltenham College and in London at Clapham Grammar School. Hartland was a traveller — he published Tapographia; or a collection of tombs of royal and distinguished families, collected during a tour of Europe. Bognor Regis is a seaside resort in West Sussex on the south coast of England, 55.5 miles (89km) south-west of London, 24 miles (39km) west of Brighton, 5.81 miles (9km) south-east of Chichester and 16 miles (26km) east of Portsmouth. Other nearby towns include Littlehampton east-north-east and Selsey to the south-west. The nearby villages of Felpham, and Aldwick are now suburbs of Bognor Regis, along with those of North and South Bersted.
A seaside resort was developed by Sir Richard Hotham in the late 18th century on what was a sandy, undeveloped coastline. It has been claimed that Hotham and his new resort are portrayed in Jane Austen's unfinished novel Sanditon. The resort grew slowly in the first half of the 19th century but grew rapidly following the coming of the railway in 1864. In 1929 the area was chosen by advisors to King George V which led to its regal suffix, by royal consent. Butlin's has been present in the town since the early 1930s when an amusement park and zoo were opened. A holiday camp followed in 1960 and this has more recently moved towards hotel accommodation with modern amenities.

Middleton-on-Sea is a typical West Sussex beach. At high tide you have pebbles but as the tide goes out you get compact sand and wooden groynes. This beach has some interesting beach protection that provide rock islands when the tide is out.
