Fengjie County is a county of Chongqing Municipality, China. It is on the Yangtze River; located within a couple hundreds kilometers upstream from the Three Gorges Dam, it is within the dam's affected area. The county's most famous geographical feature is the Qutang Gorge, the first of the Yangtze's Three Gorges. Notable karst phenomena, including the Xiaozhai Tiankeng sinkhole are located within the county. It is the place where Still Life was shot, a film by Jia Zhangke that won the 2006 Venice Film Festival .

The Three Gorges are three adjacent gorges along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, in the hinterland of the People's Republic of China. With a subtropical monsoon climate, they are known for their scenery. The Three Gorges Scenic Area is classified as a AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration.The Three Gorges—comprising the Qutang, Wu, and Xiling gorges—span 193 miles, beginning at Baidi City of Chongqing Municipality, in the west and ending at Nanjing Pass, at Yichang City, Hubei Province, in the east, between which are the Fengjie and Wu Mountains of Chongqing, as well as Badong, Zigui, and Yichang of Hubei Province;.

During this part of our journey the atmosphere on the Yangtze River was almost ghostly. At noon, the sunlight can hardly penetrate the haze arising from the high humidity.
The characteristics of the landscape has changed completely. In Wuhan it was still dominated by flat alluvial plains; now the mountain ranges, in which the Yangtze River has carved its bed, predominate.
Maybe these pictures explain the preference of the Chinese for black and white ink wash painting besides the bright colors in everyday life.

Geradezu gespenstisch ist hier die Stimmung auf dem Jangtse. Das Sonnenlicht ist selbst mittags kaum imstande, den Dunst zu durchdringen, der durch die hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit entsteht. Die Charakteristik der Landschaft hat sich vollständig gewandelt. War sie nach Wuhan noch durch flache Schwemmlandebenen geprägt, überwiegen nun die Gebirgszüge, in die der Jangtse sein Tal gegraben hat.
Vielleicht erklären aber diese Bilder die Vorliebe der Chinesen für schwarz-weiße Tuschemalerei neben den bunten Farben im Alltag.

World deepest sinkhole - Xiaozhai Tiankeng
The Xiaozhai Tiankeng, also known as the Heavenly Pit, is the world's deepest sinkhole. It is located in Fengjie County of Chongqing Municipality. The Xiaozhai Tiankeng is 626 metres long, 537 metres wide, and between 511 and 662 metres deep, with vertical walls. Its volume is 119,349,000 m³ and the area of its opening is 274,000 m². This material has been dissolved and carried away by the river. The sinkhole is a doubly nested structure—the upper bowl is 320 metres deep, the lower bowl is 342 metres deep, and the two bowls are on average 257 to 268 m across. Between both these steps is a sloping ledge, formed due to soil trapped in the limestone. In the rainy season, a waterfallcan be seen at the mouth of the sinkhole.
